Lack of Sleep Leads to Lackluster Locks, Or Worse

Even if you manage to cover the dark circles under your eyes and get the red out, your hair may be a dead giveaway that you've been burning the midnight oil.

Sleep is the body's natural restoration period, the time when it rejuvenates and repairs itself. When this suffers, our hair can too. Without enough shut-eye, our tresses simply won't grow as thick or as fast, and they will often lose their shine and bounce.

Worse than lackluster hair is losing it altogether.

According to a leading hair loss clinic in Britain, The Belgravia Centre, a lack of sleep has been shown to affect the body's immune function, hormone secretion, and physical and mental stamina. "Hair is very sensitive to changes within the body, and hair loss is nearly always the consequence of an internal disturbance," they state on their web site.

That internal disturbance is often stress -- something that goes hand and hand with sleep deprivation.

While some people can get enough sleep in just a few hours each night, others need a full eight or nine hours to feel fully rested. Either way, if the normal sleep pattern is disrupted, it can trigger emotional and physical stress.

Senior trichologist at the Belgravia Centre, Leonora Doclis, says, "Sleep deprivation is a form of stress, a terrible form of stress."

Doclis goes on to state, "Stress can indeed cause hair loss. In those susceptible to male pattern baldness or female pattern hair loss, stress can instigate, accelerate and aggravate the problem."

In addition to getting enough zzz's, you can pamper your slumbering strands with a nighttime masque or leave-in conditioner. John Frieda's Frizz-Ease Creme Overnight Repair and L'Oreal Professionnel's Liss Ultime Nuit are two good options.

You can also treat your tresses to a silk or satin pillowcase. Besides feeling delightfully soft, the smooth surface creates less friction so it's easier on your locks when you toss and turn. This can not only help prevent hair loss and breakage overnight, it can also keep your hairstyle in check -- possibly avoiding the dreaded bed head when you wake.

Apparently your brain power is lacking from sleep - yes, hair itself is dead, however, the gland and follicle through which hair grows is very much alive and as your body is one huge living organism, suscepticle to many things, such as lack of nutrition, rest, exposure to weather, stress, etc., can affect the health of ones body, which also includes hair. And there is nothing wrong with caring about one's hair or looks. When you look good, you feel good, you feel confident. If you feel smart while looking like a rag doll, good for you. Personally, people take you more seriously and think you are more intelligent when you look put together, and again, that includes hair.

And here I thought my hair looked dull this morning because it's dirty, uncombed and my roots are showing! I feel better knowing it's because I didn't sleep well! Maybe things ARE going to start going my way for once!

i once went through a time when i was losing so much hair i was afraid i was going bald (i'm female). i stared keeping my hair in a french braid and my hair started growing back thicker and longer. my hair is now longer and thicker than it ever has been. and yes i do color my hair to hide those greys that keep coming in. if you have longer hair, just learn how to put in a simple braid before you go to bead, helps keep your hair from getting so tangled and stops the breakage.

This is not true. Hair loss is genetic. Hair loss tends to run in the family. If one or more in the family has hair loss, then of course, you will have hair loss. Please do better by avoiding contradictory claims without looking to the fact that loss of sleep is not entirely to blame for hair loss as does genetics, and nutritional deficiency. And not to mention, when one makes a ridiculous statement without looking at all the other conditions that contribute to hair loss, then I think one must be poorly informed of the facts. Also there are other factors like aging which also contributes to hair loss. So it makes it difficult to exactly pinpoint the lack of sleep as the definite causes without ruling other factors out. Some people lose hair early and some of them lose hair late. Even if one would sleep soundly, still there will be hair loss if you have a genetic predisposition to hair loss. Please stop exaggerating and being an alarmist. It is not healthy.

Having thin hair is like having any other physical curse that people love to taunt you about. How rude and mean people can be. I am female and have had thin hair all my life to the point now you can see the bald spots, thanks to my grandmother and mother. It's inherited and the only way to cover it is a wig. I've worn one half my life, people are so rude, as if I was not going through enough stress in my life, this hateful loud, obnoxious bitch at work just one day kept going on about my thin hair, this was before I started wearing a wig fulltime, I finally got tired of hearing it, and I said big and loud well maam, I have a thick mass of pubic hair, would you like to see it since you are into hair? It shut her mouth, if she hadn't shut up that day she would have had a minus upper lip and tongue. I hate these kind of people. Guess what, my boss didn't say a word to me as a matter of fact everyone in there clapped and supported me. And guess what happened to bigmouth? She got cancer and lost all her hair, and if it had been anyone else, my heart would have went out to them, but not to that terrible witch. She got a payback in the worst way. And she even had the nerve to ask to borrow one of my wigs, she never got it, I, however, was nice enough to give her the address of Paula Young.

Yeah, lack of sleep does that. I know a girl who was losing hair at 20, rogaine did help by the way. I've been losing some when I never had a problem the past few years. I've had a lot of stress couldn't even sleep because of it. Had the creditors, IRS and landlord after me. Yeah, stress causes hair loss. Hopefully now that I resolved most of it some will grow back. As for sleeping it can pull out, that's why it can be a problem. Not all of it but several hairs at a time. If it keeps happening it will add up. If you lose more per day than grows back eventually you'll have thin hair.

I disagree with the 'facts' almost 100%. I was in a coma for 2 1/2 months (PLENTY OF SLEEP) and lost more than 1/2 of the hair on my head. I didn't do that much tossing and/or turning while out; on the other hand, I was taking more than adozen different medical drugs in a day. So now you want to tell me that it's all because of the amount of sleep?.....TELL ME ANOTHER FUNNY ONE!!!!!

My hair started to thin a couple years ago, in my mid-40's. I started using only organic shampoos and conditioners with no chemicals, and my hair has been fine ever since then. If you read the labels on most shampoos, there are a lot of big, long chemical names. You don't want to put anything in your hair that you couldn't eat (or can't identify).

I used to have a lot of hair that almost stood up by itself. Now I lose some when I comb it but I still have enough to make me happy. I'm a diabetic and I've heard that it may be a cause. I'll try making a braid with my long hair

besides losing my hair my scalp itch night and day. went to two doctors, a
dermatolagist, and an alergist. they just said my scalp was dry and gave
me a prescription for an ointment. it didn't help one bit. so i got on the
internet and discribed my symthem, and found it was dihydrotestosterone
[dgt]. took the info to my doctor. it was determined a hormone imbalance,
gave me a prescription for dhea and two natural estrogens. with one week
the itch was gone and my hair has return thicker and has a wave to it, that
i never had before. so have your hormones checked, esp. your adrenaline for
adrenalin fatigue. good luck, and if the doctors can't help you take your
symptoms to the internet.
