'Today' Show Exposes Dirty Underwear at Marshalls, Walmart; Others Clean Up Their Act

After outing several major retailers for their filthy practice of putting soiled undies back on the shelves, NBC's "Today" show recently returned to the stores in its ongoing "Secret Filth Exposed" series.

The good news? The investigative team found that each store that had been caught re-selling returned, deliberately soiled garments has since cleaned up its act.

The too-gross-for-words news? A whole new group of retailers -- including Walmart and Marshalls -- was caught returning questionable intimates to the sales floor.

The "Today" show's Jeff Rossen first reported on this dirty little retail secret in March, when secret shoppers were sent to J.Crew, Saks Fifth Avenue, Gap, Victoria's Secret, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, and Macy's.

The news team removed price tags and hygienic strips from panties, stained them with baby oil, and marked tags with two black dots for identification purposes. All of the stores accepted the soiled returns, and the show's investigators found the merchandise back on the shelves at Gap, Victoria's Secret, Macy's, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale's. A Victoria's Secret whistle-blower told Rossen it was common practice to put returned panties back on sale. Fortunately, the stained undergarments were not found at J.Crew or Saks.

A microbiologist who has worked with "Today" explained that soiled undergarments can harbor bacteria and viruses for several weeks, with the most imminent danger coming from "fecal material."

The offending retailers all put out strong statements condemning what "Today" found and vowed to reeducate their sales teams, adding that what happened was not store practice. Some noted that they have generous return policies, and while customers may have legitimate reasons for returning worn garments, they should never have been put out for sale.

To see if they were true to their word, "Today" went back to the retailers, this time at an upscale suburban New York mall instead of New Jersey, where the original returns and purchases took place. Some stores outright refused the returns, pointing out that the panties had been worn. Nordstrom did accept the underwear, but "Today" watched a clerk seal it in a plastic bag and never saw it back on the shelves.

Still, "Today" found other retailers engaging in the highly questionable practice. They did the black dot/baby oil test on swimwear and underwear from Walmart, JCPenney, Target, and Marshalls. Target and JCPenney accepted the returns, but investigators did not find the merchandise on the racks. Unfortunately, the garments were back on the sales floor at Marshalls and Walmart.

Again, the newly identified retailers condemned what "Today" found and insisted it was not in keeping with their policies on undergarments or swimwear. They, too, vowed to prohibit the practice and stress the matter with employees.

"Today" show host Matt Lauer summed it up by saying this is a cautionary tale for shoppers: "The lesson here is if you buy, wash before you wear."

Here at StyleList, we will be packing hand sanitizer the next time we stock up at one of those semiannual intimates sales.

Meanwhile, in other disgusting news, read about the "Good Morning America" report on how new clothes can make you sick.

I use to work in lingerie dept and women return underwear that some has stain on it and they had an attitude when I say we can't accept this. There are also some who return bras that has stain on the under arm area and yes this women still returned it and some don't even has a receipt.

Way back when.....stores did NOT allow you to try on under garments. They were also NON-returnable. Perhaps this pravtive needs to be again practiced.

All these type garments should be non returnable, because we all are paying for the
loss these stores are taking by not reselling this merchandise. The answer is only buy items your sure you are going to keep.

Shame on those who wear something so intimate and then have the gall to return it! And shame on those who accept them BACK and the gall to return them to the shelf. for the next unsuspecting buyer..what are we all thinking???!!!

All stores should never accept worn panties, bras or swimsuits. They should be concerned about protecting public health. When I pay for new underwear, I expect it to be new not used and especially not worn! That is so nasty, ewwwww!!!
The same people who bring back used underwear are the same low lifes that buy a clothing item and wear it once and take it back. They want new clothes but they don't want to pay for them or cannot afford them.

This is a true story. My aunt, years ago, wanted to return panties she didnt try on; just realized the size was wrong when she got home.. Well at the courtesy desk, they called the manager and he literally SNIFFED the panties to see if they were clean to be able to be returned. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? Right in front of a line of shoppers waiting to make their own returns. HAHAHA! Sick people

The sales clerk "sniffed" the panties! Good lord, what a sick weirdo. That clerk must have been a real "company gal". I worked in retail as a youngster and I wouldn't have been caught dead sniffing any undergarment that a consumer wanted to return. I was simply a service desk employee...save the sniffing for the management!

Just give it the SNIFF TEST. Thats one way to avoid returned underwear.

An "upscale suburban mall" containing a Walmart and Marshalls? Come now. And the original "research" (that turned up even high end stores reselling used stained undergarments) was in New Jersey? Shouldn't come as that much of a surprise, now should it? Filth is as filth does.

I love how they say that the employees went against Store policy. Like they did it all on their own. There is no way a register person would do that unless they were told to do so.

Ally - Totally agree with you. I wish there was a way for manufactures to put a safe chemical on panties that would turn colors if they came in contact with body secretions, but would wash out after the first laundering. Can't imagine a store accepting something that was worn and washed unless they fell apart after a few washes.

I used to work at Target of Escondido from 2001-2005. Believe me, used panties were not the half of the "undesired returns" we got! Though we accepted them, they were shipped back to the Distribution Center in Indianapolis.

However, we were very strict on returns in general. No reciept, no refund--no fooling! Plus, we had our policy out there for the guests to see--in both English and Spanish--on the wall above Guest Services.

We took a lot of guff from those used to the "Walmart treatment" regarding returns--but we stood our ground, while mentally "mugging and numbering" the offending guest so we would remember them.

Each store has it's own return policy. Don't expect one store to comply with your wishes because you "were able to do that" at another store--for you are not shopping at that otyher store in the first place!

I suggest that in addition to intimate apparel, try testing intimate bedding items, i.e. sleeping pillows, comforters, sheets, and pillow cases.

Returned dirty underware put back on the shelves at Walmart. Add that to the list that includes selling food with expired dates and/or unfit for human consumption, poisoned pet food, and toys made with toxic metals and lead paint. And let's not forget its many labor violations. Isn't Walmart just wonderful?

I have a part time job at a retail store and a day does not going by were I have someone doing some sort of ridiculous return. The managers are so scared of the customer complaining to corporate that they return just about anything. I once had a customer hand a me a bag full of clothes to return and in it was a pair of their dirty underwear. They claimed it got in there by accident after I told them I would not return it and made them put it back in the bag. Underwear is not that expensive that you wear it once. Please people do onto others as you would have done onto you.
