Geri Halliwell Tops Most Iconic Dress List With Her Union Jack Frock

Talk about girl power! In a surprising new poll, the micro-mini Union Jack dress worn by Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell has been declared the most iconic dress of the last 50 years.

In fact, Halliwell's red, white, and blue flag frock -- which she first wore at the 1997 Brit Awards -- proved to have more zig-a-zig-ah than any ensembles worn by American fashion icons like Michelle Obama, Julia Roberts, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Hmm.. the poll was conducted by U.K. online fashion retailer offerssupermarket.co.uk and considering that the list includes Elizabeth Hurley's safety-pinned Versace, Kylie Minogue's hot pants, and Björk's swan dress, StyleList thinks perhaps the respondents left out a few key contenders.

But according to OffersSupermarket founder Eve Atkins, "Everybody remembers the moment Geri Halliwell hit the stage in that Union Jack dress. [StyleList's note: America? Not so much.] It made everybody watching the Brit Awards feel patriotic, plus she looked amazing."

According to Spice lore, the Union Jack dress -- often accessorized with a pair of red platform boots -- was created by Halliwell's sister, Karen. "I got sent this black Gucci dress and I thought, 'What am I going to wear? That's a bit boring," the singer recently said in an interview with Piers Morgan.

Marilyn Monroe (left), Audrey Hepburn (center), and Princess Diana (right).
Photos: 20th Century Fox Licensing/Merchandising / Everett Collection | Everett Collection | Anwar Hussein, Getty Images

"And then I thought, 'Oh, my God.' I just got a light bulb and I thought, 'Brits -- let's celebrate being British! And so literally I got my sister to stitch it; she stitched it onto the black Gucci dress. It's a tea towel, that's what it is!"

Clearly, that tea towel was nothing to sneeze at (it fetched an impressive £41,320 -- $59,000 U.S. -- at auction last year).

Here's a complete list of OffersSupermarket's 10 Most Iconic Dresses of the past 50 years:

1. Geri Halliwell – Union Jack dress – 82%
2. Elizabeth Hurley – Versace safety pin dress – 79%
3. Marilyn Monroe – White dress from "The Seven Year Itch" – 74%
4. Audrey Hepburn – Black dress and pearls in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" – 67%
5. Lady Gaga – White outfit and wig worn to the Brit Awards – 63%
6. Princess Diana – Wedding dress designed by The Emanuel's – 58%
7. Kylie Minogue – Gold hot pants – 56%
8. Jennifer Lopez - Sheer green Versace dress worn to the Grammys – 53%
9. Björk - Swan dress worn to the Oscars – 49%
10. Cindy Crawford: Red Versace dress worn to the Oscars – 44%

StyleList still thinks these poll takers missed a few famous frocks worthy of consideration.

Seriously, how can anyone forget the pretty pink Ralph Lauren dress Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the 1999 Oscars, where she picked up the Best Actress golden statue for her role in "Shakespeare in Love?"

Or Julia Roberts accepting her 2001 Best Actress Oscar for "Erin Brockovich" in a black-and-white vintage Valentino?

Then there's one of the most iconic dresses in recent history -- Michelle Obama's stunning white asymmetrical Inauguration dress designed by Jason Wu.

But we want to know which dress you think is number one. Do you agree that Halliwell's Union Jack mini deserves to reign supreme? Should Monroe or Hepburn have earned the top spot? Is shocking, as in a swan or safety pins, more iconic? Or were Paltrow, Roberts, and Mrs. O unfairly overlooked? Vote in our poll for your favorite.

Speaking of icons, see which star is going to play Marilyn Monroe in an upcoming movie.

Why the hell is Michelle Obama on this list...first of all; that dress is hideous. I don't know a single person (i.e I work in the fashion world) that thought that dress was attractive. It looks like she has f'ing cotton balls glued to it. Secondly; the fit was terrible. It wasn't slimming, it wasn't flattering( she already looks like a neanderthal, why put her in a strapless gown to make her shoulders all that much more overpowering and square off her face?)...and what the hell was with the shoulder strap? The dress looked like a first years approach to something avant garde in fashion school. Also, when is America going to realize that she no fashion guru...her stylist needs to be fired and then shot for his fashion faux pas. If America really thinks that this woman has any style or class, they need to take long hard second look. She will NEVER be a Jackie.

WHAT is your problem with Michelle Obama? I mean you went way past judging her attire and just taking cheap shots at the woman. I dont know who thinks that she's supposed to be a Jackie, but you're the one with no class for that nasty post

I won't ask you to agree with Michelle or her husband on anything, be it fashion or public policy, but you're thread just comes off as boorish and obnoxious. As for me I think she's beautiful, her features are deep and exotic and while she may be twice my age with a type of wardrobe that just isn't age-appropriate for me, but the designs, colors, shapes and styles she displays are still quite classy and colorfully feminine...in my opinion.

But most importantly, Michelle Obama dedicates her life to helping people and to making a better future in this world for her children and for all of us, starting right here in our country. She's sweet and kindhearted, and her mission is selfless. She's a fantastic lady, of class and grace, and I, for one, feel rather fortunate to have her as our FLOTUS.

Besides, she could guest star on The View wearing a burlap sack and she'd still be amazing.

I agree with you completely.....she was the epitome of class. She was a gorgeous woman inside and out.....check out her humanitarian efforts in her later years. Truly one of a kind.

I would also have to include Vivian Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara (Gone With the Wind)in her burgundy and sequin number at Melanie's birthday party. She was a vision to behold and a major fashion icon in film. A true classic......

How inane,

Its Marilyn Monroe, in the white dress from 7 yr itch, everyone one has seen it, everyone recognizes it, and it has been used in TV commercials, posters on walls, etc. Only an idiot wouldn't put it at #1.

Number 2 : Easily and without any comparison, is that stupid pink outfit that Jackie Kennedy wore, her whole look in that outfit was spoofed in "Legally Blonde", the Simpsons (the wife of the Mayor always wears it). Now the only way you wouldn't include that is if you don't count it as a "Dress" but as "Skirt" but I think that would be splitting hairs. It has been see a thousand different times. I even could figure that out and I hate all the Kennedys.

Why is Mrs. Obama even mentioned, she has no better sense of fashion and style than any one else. IN fact I would say she dresses worse than most women. Why show only 7 of the 10 and not the other 3, and how is #7 "Hot pants" considered a "dress"

I agree with Andro. Michelle Obama's dress photographed like she is wearing a chenille bedspread! It is only iconic as a bad choice! Also felt the black white choice was way too obvious and unnecessary social statement.

MIchelle Obamas dress looked like a giant bedspread. It was ackward on her throughout the many parties she attended. She could not dance in it and the dress was in every way inappropriate for the evening. Plus it made her look bigger then she is.

Yes I agree those dresses, each one, are unforgettable rather it be for good reasons or bad.

Obviously Mrs. Obama made the list more for unflattering memory just like the swan dress. Yet I read no complaints about the Union Jack Micro Flock, guess everyone loved Ginger Spice's looks, lol.

Andro,
You are 100% correct. The same media that heaps praise on Obama's wife, ridicules Sarah Palin's style, then attacked her because someone at the RNC bought her "stylish" clothes that she didn't want. This is the same press that took Sarah's "Running World" photo in shorts, and attackes her, while at the same time attacks the "Wall Street Journal" for showing a photo of Kagan playing softball.
Michelle Obama is a fashion disaster. Whoever picks her clothes has no sense of proportion. And I am not in the fashion world as you state you are, but I know what looks good on a woman and what doesn't.
In addition to all the points you made let me add:
She is very tall and has a muscular frame, her legs are proportionately long relatuve to her torso, her face has a "convex" shape to it, her skin tone is a medium light brown.
So what is she wearing, a dress that make her look like she has no torso. White, which if solid and bright would provide a good contrast, to her skin tone, but with those "flowers/roses", or what ever they are, casts a graying shadow that causes a visual dissonance. The one strap looks like it is there to hold up a dress that is so baggy it would fall off otherwise. The strap also line up with whatever that is that cuts across her left breast, which creates a narrow to wide impression to the eye making her look fat in the middle (ie a preggie dress). It also "pulls" the dress upwards in the center, a look that was out of style in the mid '70s that no one would want to be seen brought back. The dress itself is widest just below the waist to mid thigh, then seems to drop straight down making her look like she has 50 inch hips. And she is most likely wearing very high heels which throws her body completely out of proportion. She has extremely muscular shoulders, so the shadows formed just below them, contrasted with the white dress make it look like she is hunched over with bad posture.

All arround bad choice.

Why does everyone mention Gwyneth Paltrow in that horribly ill fitting pink dress she wore when she won the Oscar? It looked terrible on her and her hair pulled back like that made her look even skinnier than ever with all of her bones sticking out. An iconic dress should be one where the wearer looked good. Gwyneth looked horrible - barely alive even. Julia Roberts looked alive and vibrant in her classic gown. But the use of the word "iconic" leads you to believe Geri's british flag gown is the only possible choice.

The white dress of Marilyn Monroe has to be the most famous dress of all time. That one would get my vote!

I would also say that whatever the first mind-dress that Twiggy wore should be in there, because it changed the fashion world!

Whatttt,
What are you talking about, every nit-witted talking head and fashion industry mouthpiece, were out there claiming "Michelle is the New Jackie Onassis". Frankly I didn't think Jackie Kennedy had any fashion sense either. To me she always looked like a lancky "Boy in Drag" hopelessly unattractive. But one thing is certain the gay men in the fashion world loved her, like Liza Minelli, she was the clear model for their hideous '60s fashion trends.

In my opinion, I do not believe Geri's ensemble is iconic, and is a big suprise to us as a winner... we never saw it. We've seen the others which are etched in our culture. Remember, the vote was conducted by a UK fashion retailer...that's why the Union Jack won. It is clever and important to them, which I respect. The Brits are extremely fashion conscious.

However, when we speak icon, it's Marilyn's uplifted dress!

Michelle Obama is not only beautiful in appearance, but also in spirit. To top it off, she is intellectually brilliant! What a combination. Furthermore, she weighs more than 100 lbs!! is this possible!! She is such an amazing role model for women everywhere. She could wear a sack cloth and I would think she is beautiful.
Compare her with some of the other people in the public sphere that young women emulate, eg., Paris Hilton, Sarah Palin and the unfortunate Lindsay Lohan. As women we really need to evaluate the message we give our daughters about what really beauty means

Everyone is going on and on about Michelle Obama's dress, but at least it's a dress. The Union Jack attire is NOT a dress. It's a t-shirt and panties. I'm not a fashion expert, but anyone can see that is not a dress. Seriously.

These folks have GOT to be kidding me! That Union Jack T-Shirt? (Not enough there for a dress - just a t-shirt with panties, essentially). Bjork? Good God these writers are getting young when they think trash is iconic. Michele Obama? Please. I am not a racist and I bear the lady no ill-will, but the Jungle Fever over a half black in the White House needs to take a chill pill. Nothing she has worn is iconic. Some pretty, but definitely not iconic. Jackie Kennedy's look, everything, was iconic. Women copied it the world over. Her clothes were hand designed specifically for her and when the public liked it, the outfits were mass produced.

Style List, don't get me started. Marilyn Monroe (I;m not a fan, by the way), Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Hurley are the only ones who belong on that list. Gwenyth Paltrow, the washed out look, in a pink shapeless nothing of a dress? Please, if you want to show us icons, let the nominees have some credibility. I can think of a dozen other dresses - and women who wore them - that qualify as iconic. This list is just a laughable composition of someone's favorite stars.
