Fact or Fiction? Stress Makes Hair Turn Gray

Can stress cause gray hair? Photo: Getty Images

What causes our silvery strands is becoming less of a gray area to scientists.

Reported in the science journal Cell, researchers noted that gray hair is indeed a result of stress -- but not necessarily the emotional stress from a demanding job or an unruly teenager. Instead, gray hair can be caused by cell stress.

Stress to the cells surrounding the hair follicles can be caused by damaging agents such as chemicals, ultraviolet light and ionizing radiation. According to the study's lead author, Emi Nishimura, a single cell may encounter up to 100,000 events a day that damage the DNA of these follicles which are responsible for the hair's color. It's this type of "genotoxic stress" that depletes the melanocyte stem cells within hair follicles that are responsible for making pigment-producing cells.

"In this study, we discovered that hair graying, the most obvious aging phenotype, can be caused by the genomic damage response through stem cell differentiation, which suggests that physiological hair graying can be triggered by the accumulation of unavoidable DNA damage and DNA-damage response associated with aging through MSC differentiation," researchers reported in Cell.

And while they state that the majority of this damage is unavoidable, therefore making stress less of a factor in the color of your hair, it can have a significant role in the amount of hair we have. As we previously reported on Stylist, stress can cause hair to fall out, so all the more reason to live a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Stress aside, many experts agree that genetics still play the largest role in determining when you can expect the grays to start creeping in. "When hair turns gray -- and which hairs turn gray -- is genetically programmed," Jerry Shapiro, M.D., professor of dermatology at New York University's Langone Medical Center told AARP's Bulletin Today.

Other factors that can influence gray hair include: vitamin B12 deficiency, smoking, heart disease, low bone mass, certain tumors or thyroid disease. Vitiligo, a condition where the cells at the base of hair follicles that produce color are damaged or destroyed by an immune system disorder, can also result in premature grays. And, alopecia areata, a disorder where patches of non-gray hair are lost suddenly, can make it appear that someone turned gray overnight.

Others say a pill could be the cure-all for gray hair -- take a look at this and see what you think!

Wow, My 1st strand of grey appeared when I was nine years old. I had no stress n didnt smoke, it was called hereditary at that time. My dad had grey by the age of 18. Im 39 and if I didnt color my hair, I would have the opposite birth mark of Jay Leno. so much for science.

My father had gray hair when he was in his 30's, and I'm totally gray in mid-fifties, my son who is 30 beginning to turn gray, but yet I have a sister who is 68 with a rare immune disease and takes chemo pills 3 times a day, has a full head of black hair. Its weird how genetics work.

I used to have a few strands of gray hair but after years of stress due to our son that includes lack of sleep I have SO much now! Lost most of my eyebrows, lots of eyelashes, & cannot lose weight either since then. Stress has taken years of my life!!!

That's all ridiculous...try adding copper capsules to your diet. If you consistently use them between 3-6 months you will start seeing your grey hair turn your original color starting where the most blood flow occurs on your scalp - near the base of your neck, and then later toward your forehead. Copper supplements will also assist in elasticity of veins and skin.

The points that the author make are relevant and important. However, she fails to touch on another common thread that turns hair grey quickly that is something that many of us are exposed to daily.
I am 54 and had worked in law offices in my 30's and 40's as a paralegal in LA and Boston. I noticed over time that the attorneys that drank the most coffee also had the whitest hair! This was even true for attorneys in their late 30's. I saw attorneys go through whole pots of coffee singularly in a day with resultant full heads of white hair.
I also noticed for myself, as I transitioned into sales over the past 10 years that the more coffee that i drank, the faster my hair around my temples and sideburns turned salt and pepper.
I also had a friend, 39, who never drank coffee. However, with his work as an outdoor tree landscaper he had to get up earlier and earlier. When he hurt his back he started making full thermos' of coffee that he drank to stay awake in the morning. Within one year his hair went from "jet black" to full "salt and pepper". He had no idea as to why as well, as nothing different was changed in his life save the downing of 3-4 cups of coffee per day.
No one is going to do a study of how caffeine excellerates the changing of hair color to white. Yet I guarantee that this is very, very true. As another element to note; I have two Hispanic male friends, one in his 50's and the other in his 60's who never ever drink coffee and have full heads of black hair. Try contrasting this to an Hispanic male chef that i know who is in his 40 's, loves Starbucks and is already salt and pepper.

I believe research on this subject is wholly incomcomplete. Yet who wants to tell all of the millions of daily Starbuck's users that Clairol is coming into their lives more quickly with ever drink that they take?

It's in our GENES! Many people on my Dad's side of the family started going grey at an early age. Both me and my sister started to go grey in our teens. I've been coloring my hair since I was 15! My silver strands came in on both sides of my head in the temple area. Just like my mother's did when she started to go grey in her 40's. So I grew silver hair in the same way she did but at a very young age like my father. It has to be in our genes.

It's rare but you can be as young as 17 and have a salt and pepper mix of hair color. I've seen this in some teens. But largely the gray begins to creep in at middle-age; around age 35. Until science has conclusive answers to the graying phenomena, and when there's authentic treatments available, all of us aging old farts in our 40's+ can merely color the gray the tried and true way. Or we can all go natural with snow on our heads.

I'm so glad I got the good genes in our family. I'm 63 and my hair is still a nice natural brown. My 3 younger sisters have been dying their hair since they were in their 40s when their hair turned gray.

I read somewhere that greying of your hair was due to a shortage of copper.
