Rock Rihanna's Dark Hair Streaks, Without the Color Commitment

Celebrities like Rihanna have been stepping out in a new hair color trend recently -- dark front streaks that contrast with lighter locks for a rock 'n roll vibe.

While the look is hot, chances are, sporting it at work or in the day-to-day is not.

But we've found a way to sneak the trend on the weekend or fun nights out only, with the safety net of being able to get back to normal with just a shower.

Although the TouchBack marker was originally created to cover gray roots, you can also use the temporary and water-soluble marker for instant hair color.

"Because not every girl is ready to commit to high-contrast color permanently, trying it on with temporary color is a great option," says Jason Backe, co-owner of celeb-loved Ted Gibson Salon.

To get Rihanna's look, section away a triangle shape of hair with the tip under your crown and the one to two inch base following your hairline. Backe suggests you section the triangle half an inch under your part.

Then take a shade of TouchBack that is at least two levels darker than your base color, and color the triangle from root to tip. You can allow the section to dry with a claw clip to keep it from touching your lighter hair.

An important word of warning: If your hair is particularly damaged and porous or super platinum light, there's a chance a deep color could leave some stain. If you're concerned this might apply to you, just test a strand in a hidden area first.

Once you're done coloring, you should be dry and ready to go in three to five minutes -- though Backe suggests using a hairdryer to speed up the process if you're impatient.

No reason for the stars to have all the fun.

Another tress trend Rihanna's been rocking: the red wig!

Glad they mentioned the staining, it DOES stain. Temporary color isn't really an option for those of us with curly hair because it's always a gel and forms hard if you don't comb it, which we can't.

It looks like an amateur did that dye job. Who would want to mock that hair style? lol

I don't like trendy styles. Find what most compliments your face and skin and stick with it regardless of trends. It's about having confidence enough to be the best you can be without having to be a style follower. Keep your hard earned money - be yourself.

I've observed that women who have to have the "latest" of anything are usually the most insecure about themselves.

I think it looks beautiful, if you're young. I don't see any objection to working with it no matter what the job is. I'm in my seventies now but would have worn that style I had thought of it when I was younger. It's a hell of a lot better than the ones who show up on stage who look like they don't know what a comb is!GOOD GROOMING is always acceptable. Lotsaluck!

you know how long people have been doing this for? but because Rihanna does it, it's news and considered a trendy fashion. It's not new total fail

you bet it will stain!!!! Might even look a tad bit greenish, grayish on blonde pourous hair. So irresponsible for a stylist to say this is okay to do, what is he thinking???? Oh I know, then you will have to go to a salon to have corrective color done which will cost you dearly....nice plan!

Just buy a hair inserted piece attached to a hairpin or a comb. Reusable, and not permanent.

As to this not being appropriate for the workplace, it's just the reverse of the dye job from the late sixties when one blonde streak in front contrasted with the darker hair all around it.

One dark streak can't possibly be worse than the lady I saw in the checkout line at a local chain store today. She had bright turquoise bangs contrasted against black hair that had been dyed over what had previously been bleached blonde hair.

Apparently, her bosses felt that was appropriate for her to wear.

Beautiful woman, don't liike the color. But, she's the one looking in the mirror. Guess her agent likes it though.

I'd rather have a hairstyle that allows me to see out of both my eyes. Looking at stuff all day with one eye puts too much strain on the dominant ,seeing, eye. Stupid hairstyle. One eyed, one horned, flying purple people eater..

JoanneVLavender....I was there in the 60's and I couldn't agree with you more. There is no shame in using temporary hair pieces. We who have been doing hair since the days of bubble styles and ironing boards and Campbell's soup cans know a thing or two about trends. We have seen it all and don't really need to do it again. Rihanna is a young woman who is making a fortune doing what others have already done.....

What iritates me the most is the person saying "this or any hair style or trend is not appropriate for the office. Times are changing our world views should change also. Have you ever seen a person with a natural silver streek in their hair. Is it going to become manditory for that person to dye that streek because it doesn't look office appropriate. I understand the conservative atmosphere in an office setting but I think and hope the younger generation will loosen the reins just a bit in the future.

She is cute but her hair is about the ugliest hair I have ever seen. Why is THAT a trend? I would not wear that in a dark club on the weekend and certainly not to work!

Well if you guys think this is ugly, google "scene hair" and look at the images.
Now tell me, which is worse... Rihanna's hair or "scene hair"?

That this would stop most women. My God, look at the disgusting claws that have for finger nails and the whorish outfits they wear, thinking it's appropriate "office" attire. Gross!

Sheeesh ... I've had the reverse for a while. A white blaze in the front ... natural white. And I tint the rest darker. Wonderful ploy to avoid having to touch up the roots. I get oodles of compliments for it ... except for my sis who says I look like a Zhu ZHu pet.

Suggestion for Stylelist. How about deactivating the hyperlink under each person's display name? Most of the people here don't know they have a hidden "profile" with all their comments listed ... which can be accessed by anyone clicking onto their name.

Try it and see ...Kinda scary because I'll bet you didn't know AOL linked that profile to your first EMail address which they claimed they wanted for "confirmation". Since when does Confirmation mean "set up a public profile and archives" ???

Sneaky sneaky. And if you used your real name, Google may pick it yup and you'll find that profile all over the Internet. I did and it caused me a lot of trouble.

Come on Stylelist ... Play fair. BlackVoices doesn't link profiles .... AOL main screen items won't even accept comments anymore. Time to shape up here ...

She is a rockstar! She won't be working behind the checkstand anytime soon. She is supposed to be to the extreme! Remember the 80s hair bands....Van Halen memories... cool. The guys from the 80s high school year book...silly.

Really this is about the most assinine article Ive read.
It states she has dark streaks without color commitment.... umm her hair is naturally dark .. that isnt done with any color. Its the blondish tones that is the color commitment for Rihanna. Bleaching is a color commitment!
