Lane Bryant Posts Ad Mocking Victoria's Secret, Skinny Models

Oh, snap!

Looks like Lane Bryant is still feeling a tad touchy about last month's lingerie ad drama, in which the plus-size retailer accused Fox and ABC of a double standard for running a racy Victoria's Secret commercial while allegedly censoring a Lane Bryant ad starring a curvy model.

The company's Inside Curve blog has stirred the pot by posting a video featuring a lingerie-clad skeleton who smooches her reflection in the mirror as she raves about her "perfect bra made for perfect women, like me" -- which is "not for chubbies," MediaPost reports.

Ouch!

A Lane Bryant spokesperson tells StyleList that the brand did not create the ad, but posted it in response to the ongoing body image debate.

"Millions of supporters have expressed their views in a variety of ways and following is a poignant, albeit humorous work, that speaks to the cause of accepting beauty in all sizes," according to the Inside Curve.

We feel a mud wrestling contest coming on. But while the ad is lighthearted, it's not really Victoria's Secret's fault that TV networks took issue with the Lane Bryant ad. And we're sure Lane Bryant wouldn't take too kindly to a parody mocking their curvaceous models.

We've said it before and we'll say it again... it's about embracing all body types -- no bones about it.

Meanwhile, check out the body type diversity on Glamour's cover.

This is stupid. Like you said, it wasn't VS' decision not to run the ad. And you know what, their models aren't super skinny either. (I think they're getting confused with runway models.)

Hey Lane Bryant...your insecurity is showing.

It may have not been their decision about the Lane Bryant ad but it is a double standard. Why not show "normal" sized women? Less than 1% of the women in America are the size of a VS model.

I actually think the Lane Bryant ad is a bit unfair. I think the VS models are pretty healthy sized women, thinner tall women, but healthy. They have muscle tone and all of their ribs aren't showing. It's one thing to be angry at the tv station, but I don't see the point in attacking VS. It feels like by extension they are attacking women who do shop there and I don't think I should have to feel bad about having a 32 band size. In fact I would love if VS carried 30's in the bigger cup sizes.

Also being curvy has nothing to do with size. You can be shaped like a tube and be chubby and you can be thin and have big differences in you chest, waist and bust. Heidi Klum is thin, but you can't deny how curvy she is.

Though side note, my ribs do show a bit and I'm not super skinny (I'm about 5'4" and a size 6). I just don't carry very much body fat on my rib cage.

That is pathetic. Some people really are closer to the size of the Victoria's Secret models and should not be ridiculed for it. No one from Victoria's Secret called out Lane Bryant shoppers or models for being overweight, so why belittle women who aren't? In my opinion, people can and should be happy with their body instead of lashing out because even though all body types can be attractive, insecurity and bitterness most certainly are not.

I'm not really surprised that Lane Bryant would stoop to comparing women who don't wear a 14+ to skeletons. Their slogan is "what REAL women wear." I guess they think if you're a size 12, you might as well be a size 0, we all look the same to them.

I don't think they are ridiculing skinny women - they're criticizing the fashion world in general, and picked VS because, yes, their models are skinny. Lingerie models are picked because they have the fortunate combination of skinny bodies with larger breasts and booty, which is "more attractive" for lingerie modeling.

If you read the story, Lane Bryant picked an adversary in order to highlight the fact that their image was manipulated - a huge issue in fashion considering photos of superskinny girls are being photoshopped until their bodies look completely unnatural (see the Ralph Lauren ads that elongated the torso of a model until her body looked ridiculously impossible).

I think this kind of backlash against the fashion industry is fully justified. Being a size 14, I'm a "betweener" - I'm too small for Lane Bryant but too big for clothing at stores like H&M, where you can find 14s, but for some reason, they're sized for 12-year-olds who are not a size 14 by any means. So do I starve myself or stay healthy and look harder for clothes? I figure I know my decision, seeing as how there's nothing wrong with being bigger - and still sexy.

this is dumb. i buy all my bras at victorias secret bc they are great quality and seem to be the only bras that fit right... is that why l.b. made this ad... jealousy? to make make curvy women think "they're right, v.s. uses skinny models, they suck" ? v.s. sells mainly bras, they will sell more than you, get over it. as far as the size of the models, to me they look healthy. some are skinny but they look great. i think layne bryant should pick on more clothing company's if they want to argue sales instead of distastefully targeting a major bra retailer to boost sales. help women look at themselves and love themselves, dont produce something that makes larger women look at smaller women and say they suck. be confident, dont put down others bc they look different... btw, im 5'4" and a size 12, i have a lot to be jealous of those models but im confident in myself and i got a husband who loves me and my body

May I just point out that not all size 0's are anorexic and that there are plenty of smaller women who have curves? Just one example, I am of a perfectly healthy weight, but my bra band size is 32 (possibly 30, but they really don't make bras with large enough cups for me to wear at that band size), yet I must attempt to find curvy fit trousers in order for them to remotely fit... (and of course, those usually are in departments that start off at a size just slightly too big for me to wear)

I agree w/ Liara. Until I was 20, I was a size 0-1, and I'm very healthy! I wouldn't think of starving myself to stay that small. Now, at 22, I'm a size 6 and perfectly okay with that. Being a smaller size doesn't mean someone is anorexic or doesn't have curves.

Lane Bryant did not make the commercial, they only posted it on youtube. It makes note of the broadcast networks that would not run the ads for the Plus Size models and did run the Victoria Secret ads. It is a shame that someone felt that they had to make this ad to take up for the plus size models.....which I might ad are normal sized women. Just remember, Marilyn Monroe was a size 12 and the perfect example of a beautiful woman with curves. I think plus size models start at size 14.

FYI, Marilyn Monroe was a size 12 by the sizing at the time when she was alive. I believe someone once recalculated her proportions based upon modern sizing, and she would have worn a size 6 or 8 today. I'm not denying that women can be beautiful at many different sizes, including - but not limited to - plus sizes, but your justification is just a teeny bit off.

Nobody seems to even notice the article said LB did not make this ad! they just posted it because they thought it was "poignant" and "humorous." I dont think women who have small bodies because they can't help it should be ridiculed. But i wish the same courtesy would be shown to women who have large bodies and cannot help it. Most people think that if you are fat, it is because you sit around watching tv and eating twinkies, but that is just not true. There are many different factors that can contribute to weight problems, many of which are beyond a person's control. People need to worry about their own health and stop judging others.

About 4 years ago I bought 2 bras from Victorias to wear for my husband. I began to have a terrible reaction to them, especially from the straps on my back. I then read an article about their bras being made in a country where they used a different chemical in the elastic material. I found a site where people had formed a class action suit and 2 years ago received a nice settlement check. Otherwise I like Victorias when pleasing my husband since they have a nice assortment of sexy clothing. I do not agree however with fat women buying sexy clothes since they look tacky. Of course having a president with a fat woman doesn't help our imgage in America.

This ad would be as if Vicotria's Secret posted one depicting a 550 lb slob in the same manner. Bryant's one model is beautiful. Even she doesn't stand for obesity. While anorexia is a mental disease and I do not condone it, the VS models are far from any disease and depict what 90% of the male population want. You won;t see nothing sloppy about THEM, that's for sure. But we who are toned, understand that misery needs company. It just won;t be me for tea.

Why does plus size equate sloppiness to you? the Lane Bryant commercial that was not aired on tv does not depict a woman who is sloppy, just a woman with healthy curves. VS models have no real cleavage comparatively and thats what the problems with the two different commercials. Real women with real bodies have real curves, models are generally hangers for designers' clothing and need not have real curves. This isn't about toned or fat, this is about having large amounts of cleavage displayed tastefully, and in fact the commercial by Lane Bryant is more tasteful than all of the commercials I have seen from VS lately. Please check out the commercial on Lane Bryant's website to see what I mean, these women are far from sloppy.
Why do you have to make this personal, basically saying larger women are hideous and miserable?

jylx...EmilyAva said Bryant's model was beautiful. She is saying that comparing a skeleton to a VS model would be the same thing as comparing a plus sized model to a 550lb person.
