'Busty' Barbie Sparks Controversy with Parents

Oh, that Barbie -- always up to no good.

Not only are the plastic playmate's ankles too big (so sayeth Christian Louboutin), but her boobs are too, the New York Daily News reports.

At least that's what outraged parents are saying about Barbie's "Back to Basics" collection, which features an African-American doll (#10) boasting a plunging neckline and a big rack, according to the paper.

The collection's #11 model also goes the racy route, wearing a low-cut halter top.

"I don't want [my daughter] to think she has to be this, you know, busty Barbie who's constantly wearing heels and these low-cut shirts," Minnesota mom Andie Whitaker told NBC's WPTV.

"And that's really the image I think a doll that you're going to buy for a child is portraying."

Another concerned parent reportedly told Examiner.com that she didn't "want my baby growing up to think Heidi [Montag] is her role model" -- a stance surely everyone can get behind.

But the controversy may all be for nought. Target has reportedly refused to pull the pneumatic doll, and Mattel has yet to comment.

Ken, meanwhile, has never been happier.

Do you think the doll is inappropriate for children? Leave a comment.

Speaking of dubious children's products, check out these denim diapers.

I watched a video of one of the mothers complaining about Busty Barbie, she was sitting there, on camera, with a top on that revealed just as much as the doll. And she doesn't want her daughter to see this on her dolls but she sees mom looking like this everyday. What a hypocrite. I guess one slut in the house is enough. If you don't want your child(ren) to play with the doll, don't buy it. I personally went out, right after watching the video, and purchased Busty for my collection. I collect only BLACK Barbies due to the fact that there aren't many made. If Target does take "her" off the shelves, then she will most likely become a collectors item due to all the nonsense about the doll.

You've got to be kidding me! I played with Barbie as a child, as did my daughters, who also played with Big Bird. They never bemoaned the fact that they didn't have feathers, orange feet and a beak anymore than they complained that their human proportions were un-Barbie-like. The solution is simple: If you don't like Barbie, don't buy her. The Barbie in question is made for an adult audience of Barbie lovers and collectors. We can't seriously blame our daughters' low self-esteem on a piece of plastic - no matter how large its boobs. The argument is silly. Look in the mirror, ladies. How many times have you complained about your skin, butt, hair, body in front of your girls? How many times have you told your daughters that they are smart and beautiful - in that order? The time has come to stop passing the boob, er, buck and look to ourselves for how we affect our own children's self images. http://EverBeautiful.com/?p=1422

Barbie by herself is just a whole heap of Wrong. But thats another topic for another day. Do not blame Barbie or Mattel for that matter for your lack of parenting. I played with Barbie too but my parents were also smart enough to tell me that Barbie was a doll and real women don’t look like that. Instead of replacing parenting with a doll they made sure I knew the difference between a fake doll and real life.

Don't we have more pressing problems than a slight change in a dolls appearance, no? Large breasts, small breasts why the commotion? The more we complain about this being a taboo issue the more exposure the subject will get. I wish we could drop the word "slut" from the English language, what is the male counterpart, stud?

First - these are obviously Collectors' Barbies. Not meant for play.

Second - when did we become such a nation of damn prudes? Barbies are "busty" (where? I don't see it) denim-printed diapers are "racy" (toddlers are racy? really?)

Here's an idea - instead of screaming bloody murder at the toymakers, why not sit down and have a quiet, honest discussion with your child?

If you don't think something is appropriate, tell them why, quietly and honestly. Then they'll listen. If you just yell at them or snatch something away, it will only become more precious and desirable to them. Lead by example, and tell them if you think a "role model" isn't one.

Sheesh. You don't like Barbie in fashionable clothes, you don't like her in a burkha, is there any pleasing you people?

This might surprise you - we don't allow Barbies here. At all. I did, however, take the time to explain to the kids that we don't need a hunk of plastic that has a more lavish lifestyle than we do. They can play Barbies at friends' houses if they like; there are simply none here.

I wasn't about to spend good money on her dream house, her car, her family, her friends. I spend it on us and in meaningful ways. There are plenty of other toys here, games, activities, kids to play with, computer time, and most importantly, family time.

Some folks are making too big a deal about the new Barbie being "inappropriate" for young girls. I played with Barbies (and G.I. Joes and He-Man, too) in my childhood, and I didn't grow up with feelings of inadequacy due to the way my Barbies were dressed or how big their breasts were. These Barbies in question don't even look offens...ive to me. I'm all for promoting a healthy body image in young girls, but I'm also all for instilling common sense and the ability to distinguish between toys and real life. If your daughter feels pressured to look like a Barbie doll, chances are it has more to do with the messages she is receiving from others and the media and not from playing with Barbies. Sometimes a toy is just a toy until adults ruin all the fun.

I think I can put this whole subject to rest right now. I bought the entire collection of Barbie Basics dolls. It clearly states on the back and bottom of every single doll box "For the adult collector". This line of dolls was never meant for children to have or play with. Maybe if people actually read what's on the box before getting a wild hair up their butts then they would know not to buy them for their child. I'm just glad I have the first run of this collection; now my #10 doll will be worth even more money if I ever decide to sell her! :)

What's REALLY interesting about this article is that no one addresses the fact that GI Joe's completely unrealistic. So what are the little boys thinking? That their biceps need to be 30 inches? So worried about little girls and realistic that and inappropriate that, that we forget we have another gender that is getting wrong ideas in their head.

And the funny thing is that instead of going on the five o'clock news and whining, you could be teaching your child about what is appropriate or inappropriate. Or maybe you could teach them that they're not expected to look like this. Turn off the damn tv and parent your child!

I can't understand why the box says for adult collectors only. They are being sold in the toy section, and, i for one, bought 4 to give little girls as gifts. I absolutely loved Barbie dolls as a child and I think this collection should say, especially for kids. It is so much more realistic looking than any that have gone before. Little ones can now have a Barbie that has their own hair coloring and skin tone. All are considered to be equally beautiful. And the faces and poses look more real than ever. #10 isn't wearing anything the kids won't see on any television award show. I also love the idea of teaching kids how to build a wardrobe around a few simple pieces of clothing. Anyway, I had no idea they were only for adults until after the purchase was already made so they better not have any lead in them.
