Spring 2010 Trend: Summer Suits

Suits on the Spring 2010 Runway. From left: Stella McCartney, Charlotte Ronson, and DKNY. Karl Prouse/Catwalking/Getty Images; Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz; Fernanda Calfat/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz

Temps are already skyrocketing into the 90 degree range on the East Coast which means it's time to start showing some skin. However, the office is no place to bare it all. Fortunately one of the season's top trends just happens to be the summer suit!

An updated take on office wear, the summer suit is comprised of a sharp blazer and chic shorts (which also happens to be a very of-the-moment trend in its own right).

DKNY, Stella McCartney, Chris Benz, and Charlotte Ronson were some of the designers who sent pretty pairings down the runway for spring/summer.

In each of their looks, the blazer is a bit oversized (more like a boyfriend version), and the shorts range from bitty to a longer length, like a culotte. We recommend the teeny shorts for the younger set (but be sure that's its office appropriate before you do so).

Not much is needed in terms of accompanying garments to complete this ensemble. Let the suit be the power player and keep your shirt and shoes modest. Adding some color is fine, but make sure that the overall effect is still professional. Save the hot pants and heels combo for the clubs!

What do you think of the new summer suit? Could you, would you rock this look?

Curious about what else is hot this season? Click here.

If my legs were as skinny as those models, I would not be wearing shorts!

You have got to be kidding! First of all, most offices want to project a professional, competent environment. These outfits are neither, and in an air conditioned environment, your legs would have goose bumps. Get real! Also, the beginning of June should have an article on coming summer fashions, not spring. The author of this piece probably had a bet they could submit just about anything, and it would be published. This article is a joke!

I'm sure the seminary where I work would really appreciate me walking into my office with that outfit. Seriously!! How unprofessional--unless, of course, you work for a NY modeling studio. Get real!

Right on Maletta! Take some of sleeves and add to the legs and maybe a decent outfit!

What can I say except, yuk! The outfit to the far right isn't too bad, if the shorts were actually bermuda length, but I still would not wear them to work.

First of all, these models need a few good meals. They're ematiated and scary looking. What kind of abuse is this??

Second, they do not project a professional look in short shorts, so cancel these out for the office. They're not casual enough for the beach, either. A suit with a skirt is best, although the skirt can come in several lengths, starting with just above the knees for great legs, down to mid-calf for a more discreet and alluring look. Culottes are great for casual wear, but not in hot summer; they're not as cool as a skirt. I know. I wear them!

The jackets are O.K., although with rolled sleeves, they look "contrived" and too fashionista for the office. (THANK GOD MEN WOULDN'T WEAR SOMETHING WITH ROLLED SLEEVES, WOULD THEY?) What's the point?

Thanks for the info, anyway.

If someone came to work in these outfits, they'd be sent home where I work. No shorts allowed, and no mini skirts either. When the jacket is longer than the skirt, that's too short. Most people I know (including myself) would look hideous in any or all of these outfits. Get a clue

You are kidding right??? The outfit on the left looks like a belted shirt with nothing underneath, the othersw are cute but NOT for work . Most companies don.t alow shorts to be worn in the workplace. Maybe if you work retail, but definitely not in a business office environment.

the girls are all super skinny and tall. the one to the far left is anorexic looking.I would boycott that designers clothing line because they are dumb enough to support a woman destroying her body.. .they should have recommendations for 5'3" and 130lbs! I am not fat and I am not skinny! I am healthy and athletic! !Designers need to pay attention to what real HEALTHY people look like if they want to really sell clothes!

All I have to say is that these designers have NEVER worked in your average professional office. These suits may be acceptable in the office of fashion designers, but not in any of the offices where I've worked. I've had bosses, AND several co-workers who would have had strokes had I walked in wearing some of these shorts, the bosses because they would have wanted to fire me, the co-workers because these men would have been too turned on. These are just laughable in the real world. I can't imagine any woman I know wearing these to IBM, Wall Street, the banks, hospitals or thousands of other types of businesses. But, now that I have my own business which is a great deal more casual, I would wear this. But, considering I own a retirement community, I don't know how pratical they are around some of these really old people. Your older folks can be pretty offended by clothing that is too short. But I have to remember these models are 6 feet tall and I'm 5'2" so these will probably come down below my knees. That's one reason I liked it when crop pants came into style. I could buy them and they actually fit me as pants without having to hem them. I suggest in the future that these

Shorts more than 2 inches above the knee (skirt length) are taboo in an office! Are you trying to get people fired! That aside, if my thighs were so skinny I looked bow-legged, I'd be embarrassed to wear short shorts, these girls have the legs of a 10 year old! Eat girls!

These outfits are a joke, no office in NYC is going to allow women to wear this. Maybe if you work in a small boutique or a very casual office, but most companies have dress codes that do not allow shorts. Besides the air conditioning is usually up full plast, so your legs would be freezing. Also most women aren't 6' fall, 80 pounds.

Oh Paleeeeze!!! These rediculous outfits are NOT- I repeat- NOT professional enough for the office! FAR TOO SHORT!!! If you work at a clothing store and sell this type of clothing, wearing what is sold there is appropriate. But to wear it in an office setting, is just distracting and unprofessional. Rediculous! Just because the weather is warm in the summer, does not mean one should wear a skirt just covering the bum. Offices still do have air conditioning don't they????????????

Shorts are never, ever appropriate for an office. If a woman wants to have any credibility, she should make clothing choices that reflect it, not show off her assets.
