It's no secret that fashion folks famously shun makeup.

From Kelly Cutrone to Vera Wang to just about every new model on the block, those who dictate fashion and beauty trends are usually notoriously -- and ironically -- barefaced. So it made absolute sense that at this evening's Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards ceremony, which honors the best design achievements of the year, the abounding makeup trend was the lack there of.

Besides the most historically-glamorous celebrities, many guests were fairly barefaced, with a dash of blush here and a slash of flirty eyeliner there to punctuate their best features. Stars like Jessica Biel, Alexa Chung and Dakota Fanning all looked fabulously fresh, but model Carmen Kass took the prize for gilt-iest glow, with sparkling skin and rosy cheeks.

Those who did decide to delve into their makeup bags ignored their lips, favoring instead a look that we've deemed, as of this morning, the summer smoky eye: Blended eyeliner paired with eye-color-enhancing shadow hues for a gaze that's smoldering without looking too made up. Sarah Jessica Parker, "Fashion Icon" winner Iman, and Gwyneth Paltrow all wore this trend, a look as cool as the crisp summer evening.
