Like families who travel cross country, the fashionable team at Alice + Olivia are taking a road trip this summer. But instead of hopping into Dad's prized Winnebago, designer Stacey Bendet Eisner is packing up and heading out in a gutted vintage Airstream that is decked out in zebra and paisley prints, as well as sequins and stickers.
The first stop of the South East Alice + Olivia tour is today's Bonnaroo music festival in Manchester, Tennessee, followed by visits to Nashville, Knoxville, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington D.C., New Jersey and Montauk, New York.
StyleList caught up with perky Alice + Olivia designer to find out more about the trip.
StyleList: Why did you decide to hit the road this summer?
Stacey Bendet Eisner: It's a way to reach out to stores that we sell to throughout the country. We wanted to bring a little bit of the Alice + Olivia vibe to these small towns and we always do trunk shows, so we thought it might be fun to do it as a road trip and add other elements.
StyleList: What types of things are you guys adding into the mix?
SBE: At Bonnaroo, we'll be dressing musicians and celebrities and doing face painting. We're also doing this thing called "Girl Crush" on our blog, where we take pictures of girls at the festival that we think have really cool style. We're taking DJ Mia Moretti and Caitlyn Moe, who plays electric violin, and they'll both be playing in a tent there. In Tennessee, we're doing a store party at Cotton Mill and going vintage shopping with Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood's stylist.
StyleList: And as you travel, we hear you'll be doing makeovers. Tell us about that project.
SBE: In each of these small towns, there are stories. And we figured since we're there, we wanted to do something that's really us and start doing makeovers. So, in Nashville, we wanted to help a woman who lost her wardrobe in the flood, in Alabama, we will pick someone effected by the oil spill, in Miami we'll help a woman in need and in D.C. we want to makeover a political candidate or a politician. We'll pick one woman from each town. (Email your story to firstname.lastname@example.org for a shot at a makeover.)
StyleList: Are you a festival girl? What acts are you excited to see at Bonnaroo?
SBE: I like concerts for one day, not really for three days. But I'm excited to see She & Him, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys and Phoenix. And the girls are really excited to see Jay-Z.
StyleList: What clothes did you pack for your down South journey?
SBE: We have tons of clothes with us, so we have a lot of options in the pop-up shop. And we love crazy hats and jewelry and face painting. Since it's so hot, it'll be lots of little dresses and sandals.
StyleList: Did you create a road trip soundtrack?
SBE: Me and Caitlyn did the whole soundtrack. One of my favorite songs that she and Mia play together is Digital Love by Daft Punk, so that's on there. And we love The Like, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Led Zeppelin, the Plasticines and all kinds of girl band-y stuff.
StyleList: What else are you up to this summer?
SBE: I have a lot of travel for work and with family. I'm going to Asia, Malibu for the Fourth of July, and the Sun Valley Media Conference. I just finished resort, I'm working on pre-spring and spring and we're also starting a shoe line. We haven't officially announced it, but it's on deck for sure. Our Payless line was just a little capsule collection that we did for a few seasons, but we're not doing that anymore. These shoes are much cuter and it all goes back to our dresses and clothes.
