Cat-Eyes: How To Create the Perfect Winged Tip Eyeliner

For perennially sexy eyes, learn how to to use black eyeliner like Cleopatra once did.

Cat-eye makeup
-- lined upper lashes finished with a subtle "wing" -- is one of those looks that never seems to date. First used in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia to help keep pesky sand gnats from flying into the eyes, fashionable pharaohs like Cleopatra first flicked up their eye liner, and thanks to cat-eye lovers like Lady Gaga, Angelina Jolie, and Kim Kardashian the look is as popular today as it ever was.

According to Colorado-based makeup artist Megan Temple, cat-eyes have remained in vogue because the technique elongates round eyes and is a makeup artist trick for helping larger eyes to appear smaller. Temple is commonly asked to create cat-eyes for a variety of occasions, including weddings, proms and homecoming dances.

"Younger women love this style," she says. "It gives them a unique twist on everyday makeup and makes their eyes appear smokier and sexier."

Here's how to get the look yourself:

You will need: Black liquid eyeliner, (Temple recommends using Rimmel Professional Liquid Eye Liner in Ebony Black) or a freshly sharpened black eyeliner or kohl pencil.

Step 1: Begin by placing the index finger of your non dominant hand a few centimeters from the outside crease of your eyelid. Step 2: Gently pull the eyelid up into a slight slant.
Step 3: Use the applicator that comes with the liquid eyeliner or the eye pencil if that feels more stable. You can also look for alternate brushes to work with your liquid liner.
Step 4: Starting at the crease, draw a thin line with the eyeliner until it meets your finger.
Step 5: Close your eye and blend the line onto the top of your eyelid where the skin meets the eyelashes. If you desire a thicker line, Temple recommends placing the pencil just under the outside crease of your eye, and blending it back up into the line.

To finish off the look, apply eyeliner to your lower eyelid behind the lashes. This look works well alone or in addition to light eyeshadow and a coat of mascara. Temple warns against combining it with brightly colored eyeliner. "There is nothing wrong with adding a light coat of black or gray eyeshadow along the base of your lid, just avoid overly bright colors like pink and blue," she says.

Although this is a fairly neutral eye, remember that less is more with this particular look.

What waterproof eyeliner will not rub off or come off until you wash it off?

I've tried several, pencil, avons black paste etc.

I can do the look if the stuff will stay where I put it.

I have reverted to using a majic marker. REALLY
It dried instantly, doesn't run or blob., it stays put

The best product to use is Clinique's cake liner. Not only is it waterproof, it gives a great winged look. Trust me, you will love this. Let me know what you think of it.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa? Who died and made you king of the world? And what on earth are you doing reading an article clearly aimed at women? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Nothing new about the cat eyes! They were all the rage when I was coming of age in the 1960's. Also, blue shadow seems to be coming back. Yuck, it was bad enough 40 years ago and it's not getting any better with age!

For a makeup artist she did a crummy job of explaining the steps. I cannot make any sense of them. What a waste of your space. I think some diagrams would have been more helpful. "Behind the lashes"? Does she mean UNDER them? At the lash line? "Outside the crease" but then "start at the crease"? What about the inner corner of eye? If she's creating Kardashian's look, she missed that part.

No one said it was a "new" technique... In fact it actually mentions Cleopatra, who was around Way before the 1960's...

My Stepmom always uses this argument whenever a trend comes around again from when she was in school... "You kids (I'm 36) think this fashion is new, but I used to wear it blah blah blah.." No one said it was new! I guess she's just trying to feel relevant, I don't know.. :)

I had such a hard time getting my eyeliner right I broke down and had permanent eyeliner - yes, tattoo! I LOVE IT! Looks perfect every day, every second of every day - of course won't rub off and I get to skip that time consuming part of TRYING to get the stuff on right and the expense of product! Wish I had done it sooner - The place I went to used MD grade anesthetic and I didn't feel a thing!

Eve, sorry, I thought you were remarking about the prior post, actaully his directions do make sense. As for the instructions in the article they DO NOT make sense, I agree. Lancomes site has great videos on how to do this eye.

I agree with Eve...this was just about the most useless set of instructions I ever saw. Not one thing made sense. Did they even READ this out loud, so that women would actually know WHAT in the WORLD they were talking about??

Thank God, I already know how to do "cat eyes", because if I didn't, these instructions would never have helped me!

I agree with Eve and NR, with their comments on this article that,
imo made no sense either! The 1.2.3. directions sucked as well as what kind of eyes they were trying to make up. The article talked about making large eyes smaller with liquid eye liner. I have smaller eyes.. Do I want to make them smaller? No, I would
actually like to make them appear a bit larger! No directions on that.. There's a video on YouTube of a make-up artist going step
by step on how to apply eye shadow and eye liner, among other things. She was talking about how to get that "smokey" eye look,
and everything she demonstrated, made complete sense to me! It was a great video, and I only wish I remember her name, or have a link to her page! It was probably one of the best makeup lessons I've ever received before, well at least not in person, but
just as well!

"Cat eyes" aren't sexy. Wearing eye liner isn't sexy, either.
Women should only wear mascara, shadow, lip gloss or a good color of lip stick and a little blush. What make-up artist, Hollywood actresses and models chose to promote doesn't make it the "in thing to do." For as independent as women are supposed to be these days, they surely allow themselves to be brainwashed into believing all that is put before them.
