Thinking About Blonde Hair? Three Reasons to Say Hello to Yellow

Oh, those crazy blondes -- always having more fun. Turns out, their lighter locks not only account for more nights on the town, they provide more volume and more fullness than their dark-hued counterparts.

Beyonce Knowles has recently gone blonder. Photo: Astrid Stawiarz/WireImage.com

Aura Friedman, celebrity colorist at Serge Normant at John Freida Salon in New York City and partner with Wella Professionals, says blonde dye can give more body and dimension to the tresses, making it appear like you have more hair.

It's also a perfect way to restore a youthful glow to women of all ages. "Enhancing your hair color as you age is an easy way to keep yourself looking fresh and young and going blonde is a great way to achieve that," says Friedman.

Blonde hair is all about framing the face. "Highlighting around the hairline makes color look more natural and softens bone structure," he says, "while minimizing the appearance of wrinkles."

However, going lighter is something you should not try at home. "Since you can really only change your hair color up to two shades at-home, going blonde from a box is a beauty no-no," warns Friedman. I have seen quite a few at-home experiments gone awry so the client ends up needing color correction."

Instead, think in terms of gradual lightening. "Drastic color transformations in one shot can be damaging and these changes should be done gradually over a few months," says Friedman. "In order to go blonde, you need the expertise of a colorist who knows how to find the right shade to suit your skin tone. It will make the difference between a beautiful blonde and a brassy blonde."

Jennifer Aniston's locks have faded to honey blonde, while Gwen Stefani favors bleach blonde. Photo: Getty Images

When done correctly, Friedman says any hair color can have beautiful effects -- not just blonde. Jet black hair can look very shiny and healthy, and warm browns can sparkle and reflect light. Redheads, while the most difficult to keep vibrant, can be extremely shiny and leave hair in excellent condition.

Meanwhile, want to know what else can drastically change your looks? Pregnancy! And we're not talking just your belly!

No thanks. I'll stick with my beautiful dark brown tresses. Not only does it work for me, I do way less damage to my hair and spend way less money on products. Besides that, dark hair going to light hair always has that orange tint to it (unless you bleach it so hard it looks platinum or white). Shiny, healthy, soft dark hair, or straw-like, damaged, brittle light hair? Choices, choices!

i agree with ches, why would I want to put cancer causing chemicals in my hair. Also why be ashamed to have dark hair? I'm 52 and look 42, Ladies eat right and use natures ingredients to look younger, not a blend of chemicals.

A woman with blonde hair must be carfful since there are thousands of blonde jokes out there. It is a known fact that blonde haired people are more intelligent than others but only when they have blue eyes. We had a neighbor who was a real blonde and many times she would forget how to drive her car and her husband would come out and show her over and over just about everyday.

Healthy shiny hair in good condition is beautiful no matter what the color, I agree. I had platinum hair when I was a child and it darkened to...brown. Started with the Miss Clairol at age 14 or 15 and have been blond ever since, though it was a pain to keep up with the roots every month. I went au natural when I was pregnant and suffered terribly, it looked drab and awful and...brown. Now I have it tinted a dark blond with a hint of gold/apricot and lotsa highlights done with foils. Otherwise, it would be...brown. Even worse, brown with gray! And if you look at the hair care products in any drugstore, there are tons of things to keep tinted hair looking smooth and shiny - conditioners, sprays, creams, no problemo! To each her own, but I think it's in the nature of women (besides societal pressure) to want to look her best and if that means becoming a dyed-hair hussy, so be it! Otherwise, we would have a nation of women with....brown hair. Yawn. Every horse in the barn is brown. Except for the black stallions, the russet bays, the gleaming whites, and the spectacular palaminos!

I forgot to say, all enthused about hair-dying, and please don't anyone take this as offensive, merely my opinion, but women with brown eyes look very unnatural with solid blond hair and maybe they should just do a few highlights in their naturally dark hair. Every "beauty queen" with big silicone boobs and big white teeth, usually from the south, has this look. Jessica Simpson, the pathetic Britney Spears, a ton of dark haired starlets - they all dye their naturally dark hair a solid yellow, and it just SCREAMS 'fake'. It doesn't go with their skin tone no matter how natural the color. And then those scary dark staring eyeballs...they look like some kind of blowup dolls.

No offense taken. I have brown eyes and was born with very light blonde hair. It's natural for me as well as many thousands of other brown-eyed blondes. I have dyed my hair brunette/red and talk about strange looking root growth! Blonde roots with brown dye. Now that is unnatural!

Again, the beauty section marginalises people of colour. Asians tend to look creepy blonde, and it doesn 't really look well on people darker than Beyonce. Even then, these lighter blonde shades don't even look that good on her. This article also fails to mention the downsides of "going blonde". These include dry, straw-like hair, split ends, and a lot of monet going down the drain for touch ups. Then again, what do you expect? it's a FASHION site.

I found a photo of my "blonde years" and I looked ridiculus! I wish someone would have told me. I'm back to brown hair now and it looks so much better being natural. I have some gray in there too and I won't touch it. I'm 56 and it looks good on me .

Why do you show Beyonce?! She wears a weave....a wig! I also see that she does commercials pretending its her real hair. I absolutely don't mind women wearing weaves and wigs and whatever....but pretending its real and trying to show women how "good your hair can look" from such falseness is not fair, right or ethical.

@Ches,
I have blond hair and it has no "ORANGE" tint to it nor does it look "straw-like, damaged, and or brittle" I also always get stopped in the mall by people telling me how HEALTHY and PRETTY my BLOND hair is:)
and to quote ELLEN,
"I WAS BORN BLONDE, STILL BLONDE AND GOING TO DIE A BLONDE"

Well, obviously your hair is healthy because, as you said, you were born blonde and therefore aren't using the drying chemicals on it to which I was referring. I wasn't saying blonde hair is damaged and brittle, I'm saying over-processed and dyed hair is damaged and brittle, regardless of the color. I wouldn't swap my hair's health for its color regardless of what hue I was born with.

Every time I see a black, Asian, Arabic or Hispanioc woman with yellow hair I just start laughing and want to hand them a rubber nose and big shoes. YOUR NOT BLOND !!!!! For older women, I think it looks great ! Being older is something to be proud of. How about making a blonde tax ?

you probably see more brunettes complaining because they're the ones being told to change themselves. if it was an article telling blonds to go brown you'd see more blonds complaining I am sure. why are women always so catty to one another?

Blonde and lovin' it!

@Joe... which is exactly why I love being blonde. I get to enjoy being entertained by you guys... wined and dined and spoiled... but I don't have to put up with your messes, your laundry, or your "moods" like your seemingly perfect brunette wives do. I would never want to have to deal with your macho BS on a daily basis. There ARE a lot of men out there who respect women, no matter what their hair color happens to be.

By the way, I have a very high IQ, graduated from college with honors, and have an excellent job, so don't think that hair color has ANYTHING to do with intelligence. It doesn't and is a myth that was probably perpetrated by men like you.

To those saying bleaching your hair causes cancer, more like dye, not bleaching. Bleaching agents have not been proven to be carcinogenic. Dye has!!
So washing that gray right out of your hair might also be washing something else in. Some really need to get facts straight.
As someone with blonde hair fair skin blue eyes. A natural blonde will look very pale if she makes her hair darker. We do Goth better than anyone.
Blondes are about the only shade that has to say within the range of blonde. So if a blonde tells you born blonde will stay blonde. She really has no choice. More so if hair goes to waist. Dye, bleaching agents will dry out the hair make it a wreck. Age you faster.
Darker shades. Well the selections of colors are your pallet within 3-4 shades of your natural color. No matter skin tone. I took great offense to saying you must have blue eyes. Well I do but was born a blonde. I also know those that have brown hair deep brown eyes. They are stunning.
No matter your shade want to look younger? Take care of the hair on your head. Make sure it is great condition root to tip.
Also lose the gray. Gray Magic is perfect, can use it with dye or any coloring product. Those with darker hair. Can avoid dye with henna. You can get your exact shade with same youthful highlights. After a few treatments your hair will be soft flowing have body with a youthful glow. Henna today is not the henna of yesterday. That orange ick is a thing of the past, leaving color on clothing and pillow is also a thing of the past.
So if your chasing youth, maybe your chasing the wrong thing. Try healthy natural.
I have also know some woman that went blonde brought out every imperfection. Because the lack of color will draw eyes to face. So if your eyelids are on your lashes forget going blonde. If you have the lip to nose line same. If you have lines on the forehead and go blonde might as well draw an arrow pointing to imperfection. Go try on a wig pull hair out of face than look without makeup on. It is the same effect as when I put on a blue black color wig. I look drawn out near death older than I am why because that is NOT MY COLOR NOT IN THE RANGE OF MY COLOR.
Call it natures way of saying you where beautiful the way you where.
So if you have lovely darker locks. Keep them. I more than get wanting a color you cannot have. Everyone in my family has darker skin, brown eyes, blue black hair. Save the mailman jokes, my grandfather was fair skinned blue eyes blonde hair.
So I have always admired and wanted blue black hair. Ah but isn't that always the way? You admire want what you cannot have.
Enjoy the color you have naturally. If you want to bleach out your hair fine. Just know you could be married to makeup. A natural blonde can ditch the makeup. Although our eyelashes disappear.
And if you must go blonde. Remember your eyebrow, blonde eyebrow pencil. Blonde hair with dark brown or black eyebrows will make you look hard and old.
Which is the first clue wrong color not in your color family. Your not going to look younger, just hard.
A natural brunette is stunning. Do not fall into this trap chasing youth. Although if you are doing it for a change by all means try. But keep a bottle of your natural shade handy, in fact make it a shade darker.
