4 Denim Styles That Every Woman Should Have in Her Closet

A closet filled with designer jeans might seem like a dream, but honestly ladies, how many pairs do you really end up wearing? And how many have you held on to because they "used to fit?"

Take the summer to renew your denim wardrobe with the four essential styles that every woman should have in her closet. Trust us, these fab four pairs will take you from day to night, work to weekends - and the best part is that you'll have more room for shoes and, of course, bags!

1. Weekender Jean:
  • A just-throw-on jean. Make sure you choose a style that is not too loose or sags. Being comfortable does not mean forgetting about great fit. Women prone to wearing "boyfriend jeans" should realize that is just a cheeky moniker for a baggier model. The fit should not be that literal. Too much fabric will add volume and make you look heavier.
  • Fortunately, 7 for all Mankind has a great skinny boyfriend style which is flattering and can be worn with a casual cuff for a louche look. "The Josefina has 2% stretch and slightly roomy thighs so it is super comfortable," designer Kiernan Lambeth told StyleList. "The hand-distressing and authentic worn-in feel of the premium Italian denim gives it a cool, casual vibe which is perfect for the weekend."
2. Sexy Night-Out Jean:
  • The most important thing when shopping for the perfect nighttime jean is finding a pair that makes you feel confident and sexy. Black or dark jeans that are cut slimmer through the thighs will provide added support and elongate your legs. Avoid anything that is too tight at the waist or thighs, sexy does not mean suctioned!
  • If you're adventurous, choose styles with added embellishments such as sequins or studs. Victoria Beckham Denim offers a black pair with a row of studs placed on the outside leg seam, creating the illusion of a longer leg. Wear them with a blazer and a sparkly top, throw on some sky-high stilettos and head out on the town.

3. Working Girl Jean:
  • Work appropriate denim should be classic and polished. Boot-cut or trouser styles are the best options since they can easily be paired with a blouse and a blazer. The denim should be in a clean dark wash and not be too distressed or ripped so you won't look disheveled when an impromptu meeting with the boss crops up.
  • "The Amber in the Collectors collection combines the sophisticated look of a mid-rise boot-cut with a dark, clean and crisp denim wash," says Jerome Dahan, Founder and Creative Director for Citizens of Humanity. It a classic style that's perfect for the office or workplace."
4. Day to Night Jean:
  • This is a versatile piece that you can wear with virtually any shoe and even tuck into boots during the winter months. It's a skinny, cropped style that is fitting and flattering - especially for petite figures. Wear it with flats during the day and throw on heels at night for a dressier dinner (or vice versa!).
  • "The Hannah Slim Crop Jean is versatile enough to keep you demure in flats for day, so that you can chameleon yourself into sexy in heels, for the night," says Michelle Siwy, designer of Siwy Denim, who has seen this particular pair on Kate Moss and Beyoncé Knowles.

I totally agree!! I personally LOVE Lucky Brand Jeans! They have very similar styles to these. The retail store is still $100+ but sometimes you can find the exact styles at their outlet for only $50!!!

Such a great steal.

a good pair of jeans are an investment. I own a denim boutique where we custom fit every person tht tries them on. the reason most of these jeans are so expensive (which yes, a TON of people buy them) is because they are pre washed/pre shrunk and many of them made by hand so you don't have to worry about them changing the way they look after a few washes. Most people would rather spend $200 on a quality pair of premium denim that will last them several years and fit so well that THOSE ARE THE JEANS TO WEAR if you have somewhere important to go than pay less and have the fit differ from how it did when you 1st bought them after a few washes or the quality go bad after a year. It can make a TON of difference.

CJ: No, most people would Not rather spend $200 on a quality pair of premium denim. Most people would rather spend the money to feed their families and pay their bills. I'm going to assume you see people with a bit more money than "Most People" have, because you own a denim boutique.

For once I agree, although 7 for All Mankind is a little pricey! I jusr wear my basic jeans year after year, no pre- washed , shredded or sliced or whatever is in that particuar season because next season you will be OUT OF STYLE. If you live in Beverly Hills ( where I used to ) you have to keep up I guess, but we are moving back to LA and I will have to get used to the stares, and I stare myself at all the other women,it just goes with the territory and if you are happy with how you look thats all that matters. Keep it classic like your example.

You have to be crazy to spend that huge amount of money on jeans. Denim is denim and all jeans, no matter the price, are the same. Yes, the fit is different, but just because a pair of jeans is expensive doesn't make them fit better - whatever fits you best it what counts, not the price. If you've got so darned much money that you feel you have to spend it, then buy a bunch of jeans to donate to poor children instead of spending foolishly on yourself.

Personally, I find the cleaning-yardwork-and-painting-the-house jeans an absolute necessity. I wouldn't be at home without them. I also walk the dog and pick up his poo in them. Those jeans come in handy for shoveling snow and power-washing the deck. They are my go-to jean for cleaning out the cats' litterbox and cleaning up cat vomited hairballs. I find them especially stylish for hardware stores where I end up loading bags of mulch or gardening supplies into my vehicle. I often wear them when I go to garden supply places to look through cool rocks for my yard. I call them my I'm-over-fifty-and-look-realistically-at-how-jeans-can-be-used jeans. If I need to wear jeans for fun, then they already have that distressed look to them.

Yes, mesager42, those are the same jeans I wear. Daily! They really do take you from morning to evening. And they sure don't cost $500. Yours was a fun reply.

I noticed the pictured models wetre all the typical size 4s or less instead of normal American females. I'm a guy, but know a lot of women share my belly paunch that expands when I sit down. Since denim is unforgiving and articles like this fail to acknowledge that, it really isn't a good shorts material-- unless you're willing to wear a belt and loosen the waist tab every time you sit--(like I do). Hooray for material that stretches!

I can't afford those jeans. Who in their right mind would pay that much for a pair of pants. Not me. Don't make that much money.

Hello, who writes these stories? Better yet who thinks that women who are of average, below average and above average will buy these jeans. Out there in the world of jean land - there have to be jeans that fit, that are stylish and that you don't have to rob a bank to afford.

Please put some reality back into your clips of what's good, or what one must have. You know what I must have? My brains, because in order to pay that money I would have lost my brains.

I have the toughest time finding jeans that fit me. I take anywhere from a size 0 to a size 2 (I am very petite in shape) but my problem is that I have long legs and every single pair I try on ends up being too short! When I do find a great pair that fits in length as well, there's no way I can dry them in the dryer because they'll shrink up and end up being too short again. So when I finally find a pair that's a perfect fit, i end up buying 3 and 4 pairs because you never know if you'll ever see that kind again at the store! Especially in my size. Jeans are probably the most frustrating article of clothing I have to buy! I try to stay away from trendy jeans because they'll be out of style within a year. Buy what is comfortable and looks good on you. You shouldn't look as though they were painted on either.

I like a little give in my jeans, prefer a boot cut or flare and LOVE the flap over pockets on the butt, they give your butt just that extra umph. Mid waist fit preferably. I have NEVER paid more than $50 for a pair of jeans with the normal range being somewhere around $10 - $20 and ALL my jeans are designers, but are from the clearance or outlet racks. Jeans don't change enough to tell the difference in style. My favorite jeans of all time were LA Gears back in the late 80's, they were cream colored with baby pink criss crosses all the way up the sides, they fit perfect, they looked sexy because they gave you a peek at some skin, and they hugged the butt perfectly. I'm not a size 2 and I've never had any complaints, I've dated men across the world. Indian, Native American, Pakistani, Saudi Arabian, Canadian, Mexican, Brazilian, English, Scottish, Irish, Italian, Greek, Nepalese, African, Australian, Chinese, American, and I've never had any of them complain about my weight. A man likes boobs & ass. They don't want a size 2 stick figure, because as my Dad always said, they don't want a 2 by 4 that beats them to death before they're done.

Debbie - Not all size 2 women are stick figures! I'm not. I may be small, but I also have a nice figure (on top) as well.
My favorite jeans of all time were the Jordash jeans! lol They were quite popular back in the late 70's when I was a teenager.

For $200, you should be able to get at least 10 pairs of jeans, not just one! Honestly, a closet full of designer jeans is not MY idea of a "dream." I'm not THAT shallow and superficial. Not "every" woman "should" have the four styles of jeans you recommend, just the self-absorbed, rich, single, unnaturally skinny clothes horses.

What do I do for jeans? I go to Walmart and get a couple of comfy pairs (you need two pairs so that you have a pair to wear while the other is being washed), then just alternate between them and wear them until they wear out, then I get new ones. And please, people, don't go getting all PC on me for shopping at "Wally World." If it weren't for Walmart, I wouldn't be able to afford much of anything. If I could afford to shop elsewhere, believe me, I would. Besides, not only do they have my prices, but my sizes, too.
