Makeover Diaries: My Five-Day Glam Plan

In our new column, Makeover Diaries, women tell the stories of their real-life beauty transformations. Donna Rodgers of Boston was an all-work, no-play executive recruiter too busy for makeup. Then lash extensions turned her into a doe-eyed beauty ready for fun!

I'd always loved wearing makeup. But somehow over the last few years, because of a crazy-busy work schedule, lots of travel and co-workers who don't wear makeup, I stopped too. Recently, I ran into an old acquaintance who remarked, "You have always had the most beautiful eyes. Where are you hiding them?"
Ouch! I vowed to make time to bring back my eyes, and discover new lip and cheek color, starting the very next Monday morning. But first, I called a few top makeup artists for advice.
Boston-based makeup artist Katrina Hess recommended well-groomed brows, clean, healthy skin, and bold, dramatic lashes and eyeliner. A modern smoky look works great, too. "Use eyeliner of any color – just blend and smudge well," she said. Another top Boston makeup artist, Dianna Quagenti, advised me to focus on one feature. "Eyes or lips, not both," she said.
With their suggestions in mind, that Monday I headed for the M.A.C. Cosmetics counter at the mall on my way to work. I bought all of their Pearlglide Intense Eyeliners, and tried each one. Designer Purple, blended the way Hess recommends, woke up my eyes in a way nothing else ever has. Using just a few strokes of Studio Fix Lash mascara, I headed for the office. "What's different about you this morning? You look great!" a colleague said. The change was just subtle enough.

But I wasn't finished. That afternoon I returned to the mall for lipsticks. Heeding the advice of Vicki Morgenstern, who told me nude lips can be very appealing, I decided to spring for some new nudes, neutrals and bright new colors. Givenchy's Rouge Interdit satin lipsticks in (25) Rose Caprice, (26) Voluptuous Nude, (32) Delice Brown and (10) Paradise Pink are great selections.

I also left with false eyelashes. I love the look: sireny, yet wide-eyed. The makeup salespeople told me I would be a good candidate for eyelash extensions because I have big eyes. So I made an appointment for Wednesday at Noelle Salon, where it took a little more than an hour and cost about $150 to apply the lashes. The process was painless, and the results spectacular. I couldn't stop looking at myself. My eyelashes were amazingly full and lush, yet they didn't look over the top, either.
Wednesday my assistant, Maureen, told me I looked amazing. Thursday the waiter in a restaurant said I had "Bambi eyes." Friday, I reviewed my week's worth of purchases and basked in a week's worth of compliments.

Sure, I had spent $900 on my new look, but it was worth it. Plus, I discovered that having a glamorous new look encourages others to invite you on spur-of-the-moment nights on the town.

By Saturday, I was shopping for new clothes!

Donna, years ago there was a survey done asking men what part of a woman men look at first. 7% said the face. I did not answer the poll, but I would put myself in that 7%. You look great without the makeup. You also look great with it. I'd suggest saving the makeup days for special occasions, not every day.

Agreed!!! She was gorgeous without it. Makeup is generally bad for the skin and unnecessary. I wear eye makeup only at work, and that's it....

She looks better without that makeup because she has way too much of it on (in the picture), she might as well be a hooker.

Totally disagree. she looks amazing! Very preety and NOT OVERDONE. More women need to take more time with hair, good skin care and becoming makeup.

Its almost impossible to compare the two photos.
The lighting and the pose are not identical.

Ms. Rodgers is a very pretty woman with or without makeup. Now if you had started with someone who resembled Willie Nelson and ended up with Ms. Rodger's after picture, I would have been impressed.....

Men just want to see the boobs. If you have a nice body, the face doesn't matter much unless you are extremely ugly. You can have a beautiful face but be fat and you are'nt getting any play. So yes it's the body that most men care about.

Spending 900 dollars on makeup is ridiculous. A splurge for a regular person is maybe an expensive mascara or foundation. This article is irrelevant, they should of at least told the consumer how to achieve the same look or something similar on a tighter budget.

What is up with the different lighting? The first picture has a very cool cast, making her look totally pale and washed out; the second a very warm and flattering light. It is impossible to tell how much of the look is the effect of makeup vs. how much is a better, more knowledgeable photographer. And the price is extreme! Think 8 months of lunch at work (20 workdays/month x $5 x 8 months) = $800, with $100 left over in case I underestimated the cost of a daily sandwich or salad. Think almost a month’s rent at $1000/month (market price in my [admittedly expensive] area of the country). Get real, people!

Look nice either way. To me it looks like you are wearing some sort of eyeliner/mascara in the "before" picture. You do have beautiful eyes either way, but for some reason I prefer the before picture and I'm a sucker for makeup.

I don't see that big of a difference. The differences I do see have little to do with make up and more to do with the composition of the photograph. The before picture has the lighting coming from her right, she's farther away, it's not quite in focus, and she doesn't have any lipstick on.

I think Ms. Rodgers looks much better without make-up. She is a beautiful woman and although she looks nice with the make up, (albeit a bit monochromatic) she shouldn't over do it. She is fortunate to have flawless skin. Some of us aren't that lucky and have to use foundation to cover certain things. If I could go with the natural look, I would take advantage of it and not clog my skin with all this goop.
Take advantage of your youthful skin and show off your natural beauty. Highlighting your eyes with minimal make up is a good choice. Save all the heavy stuff for the big night out!

The lighting ion the two photos should have been identical. It's unfair to use poor lighting to indicate a "poor" appearance. This woman is pretty even in poor lighting but I suspect with matching lighting, the difference in the photos would have been so subtle most couldn't see it.

This is a rediculous article. She is very pretty in the before picture. I think prettier than the after picture. She has way too much makeup on. I can't see any "extensions". She looks like she has mascara on. I've had eye lash extensions on and you can clearly see a difference in my eye lashes before and after. The lighting and picture are clearly at play here as well. I shop at Mac regularly and have never had to spend 900 for make up and she has not mentioned any other products other than make up so I think this is rediculous. If she had moisturizer or eye creams I could understand the amount, but not for Mac makeup......

Hookers wear make-up because they are ugly and because they are sometimes really men who need to attract other men for sex. When I was a medical consultant for the State Health Department I had to drive home from Los Angeles and I drove down Santa Monica Blvd to get to the freeway. Wow! There were hookers everywhere! What a parade of clowns. A really beautiful WOMAN does NOT need to wear make-up.

I agree with a few of the others, she has way too much make up on, and it's way too sparkly. I think something a little more matte and subtle would be more amazing. She's much more beautiful in the before picture.
