I Declare Independence From...Super Straight Hair!

In anticipation of Independence Day, we asked fashionable folks what style hangup they'd like to declare independence from this July 4th, and solicited expert advice to help them kick the habit.

"I want independence from my naturally super straight hair. I've always wanted that beachy, wavy, sexy hair look." -Tinsley Mortimer

Mortimer is a New York girl-about-town who tirelessly wears her trademark butter-blonde, poker-straight locks at an endless array of paparazzi-laced events -- so we were shocked to hear that the socialite has craved waves her whole life.

A woman who wants the opposite kind of hair than what she has? Never.

Mortimer will be happy to hear that celebrity hair stylist Ted Gibson says tousled waves are within the reach of even the straightest-haired girl.

Aim for a good blow dry with a round brush that you add non-sticky volume to with the help of a spray like Build It Blowdrying Agent. Then calm flyaways and prep hair for heat styling with a light shine lotion that also offers thermal protection like Tame It Shine Lotion.

Then it's time to power up that curling iron.

"Take one and a half inch sections using a large barrel curling iron -- or if you want a smaller curl, use a medium-sized iron. After you finish, tilt your head over and use hairspray at the roots. Flip your hair back and you will have sexy, beautiful curls," advises Gibson.

And if you have waves or curls already but are suffering from not-so-sexy summer frizz bomb syndrome, Gibson recommends a light silicone leave-in product to lock hydration in and frizz out. Gibson's Hair Sheet does the trick, with the added benefit of lavender oil for a natural antiseptic and refreshening effect.

See who else has declared independence!

The late, great Farrah Fawcett had the most beautiful hair; that "just woke up look" kind of hair. So sexy! I love it!

Finally, an article for people with naturally straight hair! No one ever talks about people who have straight hair naturally, and curling straight hair takes forever so we tend to forgo any curly looks because they just take way too long. Now if I could only find an article for the slim minority like myself who have thick AND straight hair! Not every straight-haired girl has fine little blonde locks!

What you say may very well be true. But if a great hairstyle makes a woman feel good about going out into the world, where is the harm. Better to go out looking like you care about yourself than to leave the house looking like you've never heard of a hairbrush, soap or toothpaste...

Steve - I loved your comments. So true, and so refreshing to hear a man talk this way, not focusing on external beauty. Thank's for giving me hope that there are a few good men around.

Why would anyone so blessed with straight silky shiny hair want to ruin it with curls??????

Tanddsullivan, thank you. But men preferr currlie locks. Never met a man when my hair was straight -- come to think of it.
I had a curtly perm from back in the day or just curled it myself every day with tiny curlers -- what women have to go thru, hmm.

People think I color my hair because it's so naturally black and shiny. The shine is a reflection of a healthy AND a healthy diet but since being struck w/an autoimmune disease my hair is no longer shiny. I miss the shine. I was told, "you must be doing something, cuz hair is not that shiny"! She didn't hang around long enough for me to tell her that skin and healthy hair is a rreflection of what is going on inside a body!!

I wish I didn't have such straight hair. If I curl it, the curls are basically gone in an hour. I've had to rely on perms to keep any kind of a curl.

Girls with cury hair are very lucky, they have a choice of either, but someone with staright hair there is not much of a choice but to rely on chemicals for curl.
