Think all vegetarians are scrawny, pasty, mousy types? PETA is about to prove you way wrong!

The critter-friendly organization has named actress Olivia Wilde the Sexiest Vegetarian of 2010.

"Animal lover and activist Olivia Wilde proves that being vegan helps one shine from the inside out," PETA writes on its Web site.

"She has saved lives on Fox's hit show 'House' and has saved the lives of animals off-screen by choosing a vegan diet. Going vegan saves the lives of about 100 animals a year!"

The va-va-vegan explains on her Web site that she adopted the lifestyle mainly because she wanted to boycott torture factories, and adds, "I am also way happier when I eat a plant-based diet, and I feel about a thousand times more energetic."

Of being named this year's Sexiest Vegetarian -- alongside "The Biggest Loser" trainer Bob Harper ("a dude who disproves the silly lie that vegans cant be strong" says Wilde) -- the beauty, who appears in the upcoming "Tron: Legacy" and next year's sci-fi fantasy "Cowboys & Aliens," writes, "I am really honored, and very inspired to continue living the vegan lifestyle that has been so good to my body, my animal friends, and the world we live in. So thank you, PETA, and thanks to all who voted for me!"

In related news, read about Wilde topping Victoria's Secret's Sexiest Actress list.

Good for her. I am in wholehearted agreement with her philosophy. I have been a vegan for forty years and have yet to experience an ill effect, lack of vigor, or need to rip the flesh of innocent animals.

I won't knock anyone else's dietary beliefs, so Olivia gets a pass from me. However, I wonder if PETA has ever crunched the numbers to see what an impact we would have on this planet if we ALL became vegans.

This planet's survival is based on balance. Nature has successfully juggled the mix between omnivores, carnivores, and vegans to this point.

However, would this planet survive long if we shifted that balance so far over to one side? I have a difficult time believing that the planet could sustain 6 Billion HUMAN vegans in addition to the population of vegan animals of whose population would EXPLODE were we no longer harvesting them for food. The end result of that scenario is a starving human population AND a starving animal population.

Contrary to what PETA wants you to believe, we are by nature omnivores. We are as every bit a part of nature as the shark in the ocean or the lion in the jungle. This planet has evolved in accordance with this fact. To upset that balance because an animal has a cute face is irresponsible and short-sighted at best.

I also have to ask PETA where the compassion ends and the hypocrisy begins. If you're going to be adamant about a cause, do it full throttle, not half-way. Should we not kill the disease-carrying mosquito flying around the infant's crib? Do PETA members allow cockroaches to live unchecked in their homes, or do they draw the line on compassion when it personally inconveniences them?

My point is that a living thing is a living thing. If PETA wants my respect, they must commit fully to ALL living things and not just the ones they deem worthy of protecting......such as only the cute furry ones with the doe eyes.

If PETA was 100% committed to the cause of saving living things, then I propose we start with saving Killer Bees and Fire Ants.

Oh.....wait.....aren't PLANTS living things too?

Let the hypocrisy begin......

As children, many of us were brainwashed. I mean think about it....even if you don't care about animal suffering, no normal, decent person would want to do something as grusome as eat the cut up insides of animals......and oh boy....I never noticed it until I quit smoking, but now that i have & I've gotten my sense of smell back, animal eaters smell bad.

And I can't wait for "Bumblebee" the calf to finish getting to about 1000 lbs in my backyard. He is gonna transform into hamburger, steaks, roasts, etc.... I love my fruits and veggies also. I also quit smoking a few months ago and now my steaks smell even lovelier!!! Especially when they are med rare.
No I am not a guy - I am a omnivorus female.

So you believe being a vegan is morally superior to eating a diet containing meat. Hummm. Appearently you haven't thought this out or ever lived in farm country. A vegan diet must eat plants from plowed fields contributing to soil erosion from wind and rain. Plowed fields do not catch the rain to sink into aquifers. The rain runs off into rivers and drries the land.In a plowed field noting except that particular plant lives. Insecticides and herbicides -poisons - are sprayed on these fields killing everything but the plant you eat. Fertilizers are sprayed on too. Each time it requires a tractor to use fossil fuel to plow, plant, spray, and harvest the plant contributing to Global Warming. Cattle graze on grass lands. No plowing, poisons or tractor spewing green house gasses. No soil erosion from wind. The rain is capture by the grasses and holds the water on the land replenishing the aquifers. In the same pasture as the cattle there are mice, camelleons, grasshoppers, etc and the birds and animals that feed on them. Hawks, owls, fox, swallows, and many more. you can have your field of death to grow your plants. I think nature is better served with my pasture.

Ever notice how all these vegans hate people that are eating meat? That's cause deep down inside they KNOW how good that must taste and are soo envious. All the stuff they eat is the stuff I force myself to eat to round out my diet. If I had to live on that I'd be a hater too! Go On vegans, have a steak, nobodys watchin!

Take another look at Olivia Wilde. Her skin is stretched so tight across her face she looks like she had cosmetic surgery. You vegans do know there are collagens for skin in meat not found in plants. There are countless other sources of nutrients in meat you can't get in plants. Our intestines are not built to digest plants alone like a cow. We are omnivores. Why deny your natural state? Do you get off on denying your evolved biology? Delude yourself into believe you are some how morally superior? LOL. Grilling venison today. Natures finest nutritional source. And virtually fat free. To the uneducated, a deer grows it's lard/fat separate from the meat. This means the meat is fat free. Not as sweet as beef but all the nutrional benefits without the risks from consuming too much fat. Oh, and corrolating to my earlier post. Deer too live on the p[ature with the cattle, your plowed, poisoned field is deerless except for a few weeks in the fall near harvest time when they eat your food first.

We(humans) didn't spend 65 million years to climb to the top of the food chain to eat a salad. I got it. They(PETA) think they're saving some poor animal that was created to be eaten to begin with. I just don't get it.

Ever notice that when the subject of eating people comes up, everyone gets upset? Why is killing an animal and eating it more acceptable?

Some "food" for thought...what do you suppose your canine teeth are there for ? Also, consider the scientific principal of "survival of the fittest". If we humans are at the top of the food chain, then everything below us must be considered fair game (no pun intended). The human body is designed to run,
and requires, a wide variety of nutrients, including some components found in animal meats. Focusing only on one category of edible substances, while ignoring others, is dietarily unsound philosophy.

If I were her, I'm not sure I'd want to be associated with Peta. Being vegan is fine and being against the abuse of animals is also fine, but PETA carries this philosophy to extremes.

What really bothers me is that PETA tries to pass itself off as some kind benevolent group of people when in fact they are very political and use their financial muscle to try persuade and intimidate politicians to pass laws that make it harder for the meat industry to operate, they also support stopping all hunting of wild game and so on and so on.
if they had their way we would all be forced to eat their crap food

Eating more vegetables is healthy. Ensuring that livestock (and pets) are treated well is admirable. Supporting an organization that does more harm to the cause than it helps, has questionable concern for the animals it allegedly wishes to "protect," and that serves as a publicity vehicle for has-been stars is lunacy. Everyone should be respectful of all living creatures who....despite what biologists might tell you...are sentient beings, but nature isn't always pretty. Animals eat other animals; and for some, it's the only way to obtain sufficient nutrition to survive (e.g., cats). Vegetarianism is a lifestyle choice. I'll respect your choice, but you'd better respect mine and quit trying to force your choice on others.

I love the way that as soon as vegetarianism is even mentioned, people start getting defensive. Hint: when someone tells you they're vegetarian, they're most likely NOT asking you to defend your lifestyle. Most of us wish the world was a more animal-friendly place and do our best to help animals with our own choices, but don't attempt to force others to change.

The fact that many omnivores feel the need to attack vegetarians and viciously defend meat eating literally any time the subject comes up says more about their own issues than the philosophy they endorse. I don't start on a tirade every time someone mentions steak, and just because there might be some obnoxious vegetarians that do does not excuse childish behavior on your part.

Side-note: the naturalistic fallacy is rampant in these comments. If you're going to defend something rationally, at least try to utilize the basic rules of logic. There are certainly reasonable ways to defend eating meat, and "it's natural" isn't one of them. Humans NATURALLY fight and kill each other, too, but that doesn't make it justified.

She's an attractive woman no doubt about that. So PETA has time to do wacky off the wall protest against people who wear furs and have their own selection of a sex symbol. Whatever? I guess Pamela Anderson Lee got to old for them.
