The Makeover Diaries: A Mother of Three's Makeover-haul

mom makeover before and after

In our Makeover Diaries column, women tell the stories of their real-life beauty transformations. Vicky Pazienza, a New England mother of three, was approaching 40 when she realized a good mom could also be great looking.

Let's face it, some of us who are married with children have let ourselves go.
I spent the majority of my 30s in sweats with my hair up in a clip. I barely shopped. Whatever was easy and fast worked for me. I began to believe that looking good meant I was shallow and selfish. I told myself this so I wouldn't have to face what was truly happening: I was putting myself on hold, letting my needs come last.

Then I turned 38 and realized that in two short years I was going to hit the big 4-0. I suddenly started regretting that I hadn't put more effort into the way I looked. I decided to take action.

I started with my biggest problem, my hair. My bad hair "day" had lasted for about five years. A new stylist encouraged me to let me locks grow longer, and gave me highlights and bangs. She also taught me to take care of my hair myself. Who knew that washing your hair every day wasn't really that good for it? Or that corn starch could do wonders for a greasy scalp? She taught me to blow dry my hair in sections, up and forward to create more lift and fullness.

My wardrobe needed a huge overhaul too. My stylish sister took me shopping and made me try on clothes that I would never have dreamed I could wear. I wanted more, but I realized the best way for me to have more fashion choices was to lose some weight. Plus, it would be better for my health. I lost about twenty pounds, using the Optifast Plan.

Suddenly, I knew all the latest looks and what worked best for me and my new shape. The flouncy styled tanks were great at covering my extra belly fat. Gap jeans gave my butt a nice lift. I found that accessories, from handbags to sunglasses, were key to finishing a look. I took better care of my skin, bought better makeup and got manicures and pedicures.

Yes, this did make a dent in my budget, but the benefits far outweighed the costs. I enjoy getting dressed and ready every day. I'm 41 now and most people think I am several years younger. The best part is that I feel sexier and more attractive now than I did in my twenties.

Many moms think that looking good is a waste of their precious time, but trust me – you are worth it!

Joanne - If you bothered to read the article, after picture was taken 4 years later, and she says that her hairstylist convinced her to let her hair grow long. I also don't know how you can tell that the blazer is a "tight fitting polyester." There's no reason to believe that it isn't a cotton blend and from this photo, it's impossible to know if it is tight on her.
How critical you are-
I think she looks beautiful and should be proud of her accomplishments, incluidng her make-over.

Her hair looks much better shorter. I hate long, long hair, it's not pretty!!! Demi Moore looks awful with those long locks.

I agree! She does look better with the shorter hair. It's much fuller. The only thing I like about the after picture is the eye makeup brought out her eyes.

Wow, you all are pretty harsh. I think she has more style now than she did then. She looks more like a single working lady than a stay at home mom now, in my opinion. The bob makes her face look pudgy. I would like her hairstyle a little better if it was just to the top of her chest. Long hair is flattering for rounder faces. But really long hair is best left to teenagers. Cut about 5-6 inches and then I think she's good to go!

SHE LOOKS HOT! 100% IMPROVEMENT! LOOKS 10 YEARS YOUNGER. ANY WOMAN THAT CAN'T SEE THAT IS JUST JEALOUS AND CATTY.

No Gene not Catty. Lindsay was looking haggard and even wrinkled at one point. Normally I would think sun damage. In her case you have to think depression induced by drugs and alcohol. I have seen that in friends before.
Lots of people realized this and like a true addict Lindsay mocked people who were warning her and giving her chances to save herself. We are not envious of Lindsay. For some reason we like Lindsay despite all her drama...but then many of us are classic enablers. The addict is somehow charming and needs us. So please do not take my word for it.

She did look better but still aged beyond her years. I hope there is competent medical help in jail when she detoxes cold turkey!

She looks gorgeous! She looked fine before, just a little heavy and her skin a little drab. And BTW, a lot of straight guys love long hair on a woman.

Do any of you ever even read the story, or just look at the picture and make your comment? I believe it says that she did do this makeover herself. She looks great.

I think she looked better before, with the shorter hair. She has nice cheek bones and frankly, in the "before" picture , my opinion is that she only needed to be made-up not made-over. Maybe her clothes got better, but you can't really tell just by one picture.

it's funny how you sit your ass on your pc and judge people for making an effort and helping others in the same situation gain some confidence. but poor you, you're so insecure that you need to trash talk people's hard work to make yourself feel better. that's pretty pathetic to be honest. if you think you're such a goddess, we'd love to see you grow a pair and put yourself out there like the author did. but that will never happen. why? because it takes a special person to go through all the changes she went through to get to where she is and then write about it and put herself out there, and believe me, you're nothing special.

nobody cares what you think she "should" do to "better" her looks. you're no better than the scum being harshly judgmental over two pics of someone you don't know. the article is about what she has gone thru to gather her confidence in how she presents herself as well as to offer encouragement to those who would like to do the same, not what worthless trolls like yourself say should be changed. if you don't have anything positive to add, shut your damn trap and leave it alone. or just off yourself, the world would be a better place. meanwhile I'll be playing the tiniest violin in your honor, you pathetic turd.

Her points are very well taken. It should be an inspiration to women to try to put yourself and your needs up there with the rest of your priorities. Remember a few years ago when all the rage was cotton gym pants, a t-shirt, and the jacket tied around your waist, all while your hair was up in a messy ponytail/bun or shoved under a hat....I still see women (not at the gym) doing that today. I'm sure it's easy and comfortable, but it is also a way to hide.

The point is....take care of yourself. The rewards are more valuable than simply taking the easy way out.
