Maybelline Great Lash Mascara was voted "Best Drugstore Must-Have." Courtesy Photo

When you spend countless hours navigating the beauty minefield of products, treatments and tools, you get a good feel for what works and what doesn't pretty quickly.

Just ask the nearly 1,500 Empire Beauty students in training, who this year voted on their top picks for the beauty school's annual Future Pros Style Awards.

Nick Arrojo was voted best hair pro, while the makeup title went to celebrity skin perfecter Laura Mercier.

Beauty on a budget is a must when you're a student, and the group voted Maybelline's Great Lash Mascara as the best drugstore must-have, with the super multi-functional Q-Tips coming in as runner-up.

The students also passed up top retailers like Sephora and the drugstore in favor of their local beauty supply store, where deals are served up daily.

You also won't find these hair students without their CHI tools, and Goldwell beat out close runner-up Redken for best shampoo and conditioner brand.

Not surpsingly, the makeup artist-loved brand M.A.C. stole best overall cosmetics brand, but Maybelline captured best mascara brand and Olay topped the students' skincare list.

OPI triumphed in a close call with CND for best nail care line, though we won't be surprised if the recent Shellac craze drives CND to the top spot next year.

Below is the full list of winners, as selected by Empire Beauty students.

I'll have to try some of the "winners" and even "runner ups" that you listed.

Although, just because it was deemed the best, doesn't mean it's always going to be best for you. For example, I prefer Bare Minerals foundation over MAC.

Exactly, Heather. That's why I don't put a lot of emphasis on these types of polls/awards. What works for some doesn't work for all. Maybelline has never been anything but orange on my fair complected face. That is why losing Prescriptives was such a blow to me- they were the only cosmetic brand that took into account that all of us don't have yellow/orange or red only undertones in our skin! I even had one of their representatives tell me to steer clear of MAC since it tends to run orangy as well. In the Lauder owned line of cosmetics that leaves me searching for another line of make up since all the rest of them go orange on my face, too.

It boils down to still being a trial and error process much of the time.

I think alot of these so called polls and the like, are paid advertisments for these products. They read too much like an ad and less like a real evaluation.

I have been wearing Maybelline mascara since it came in a cake with a brush! I have paid big money for mascara, but always came back to Great Lash. First a coat of regular, then a coat of waterproof - easier to get off that way. It truly is the best by far.

I actually have this mascara and it does word pretty well although I have to prefer Covergirl Volume Blast Mascara (the one in the orange bottle) I like the mascara I have but it tends to make my eyelashes stick together if I use more than one coat while the Covergirl one doesn't

I can't believe that there's all that much difference between the brands on this list and most common store brands. I think the only real difference is the extra bucks you're paying for a name.

Great Lash is the worst mascara I have ever tried. It's watery, runny and a mess to apply. Other Maybeline mascaras have worked well, but this one didn't work for me.

This truly is the best mascara and I should know - I've been a mascara junkie the past few months and seem to buy a new one every few weeks! I really love this one, however, do not like the one called BIG. That one clumps.

I have worked in cosmetics for 30 yrs. I have worked for almost every dept. store brand you can think of. Before I got my cosmetolegy licsense I thought Great Lash was the best too. BUT! now I know that Lancom'es "DIFINICILS" mascara is absolutly the best mascara avalable. Yes, it's pricey. But when it comes to mascara, you really do get what you pay for.It was voted #1 by licsened professional make-up artist for several years running. Just splurge and try it. you'll see. First apply 1 coat to lashes then go back and just do the tips of your lashes. The look is long, beautiful, seperated lashes that do not smuge under you eyes after wearing for an hour or two. LOVE IT!!!

I have never had good results with Great Lash. I have been using L'Oreal Double Extend mascara (mascara tubes). It goes on smoothly and you only need 2 coats to get nice and even coverage. It lasts all day and night if needed. Removes with plain water, so no remover gets in your eyes. Just splash with water and gently rub with your finger. Comes right off! It really is good stuff.
