Michelle Obama Wears Peter Som to U.S. Coast Guard Ceremony

On Friday, First Lady Michelle Obama traveled to Pascagoula, Mississippi to thank the Coast Guard for their dedication to the oil spill and christen a ship named after Dorothy C. Stratton, the U.S. Coast Guard's first female commissioned officer.

For the somewhat somber occasion, (though she did crack open a bottle of champagne as part of the induction ceremony), Mrs. Obama chose to wear the ultimate in American sportswear - a sleeveless striped mousseline and layered organza dress from Peter Som's Spring 2010 collection.

"The woman makes the clothes - this is proof positive with Mrs. Obama," Som told StyleList. "I'm humbled and honored that she wore one of my pieces. She's an inspiration in so many ways to so many people. Her great style is the icing on top."

The frock packed the perfect amount of punch for the event with sophisticated watercolor-esque stripes and a mixed print bouclé bottom.

She wears some of the most awful things in public. And someone needs to tell her to lose the belts unless they are worn at the waist. They do NOT enhance any outfit, especially on her.

Doesn't anyone have the courage to tell this woman how bad most of her clothes look? She has a beautiful face, fantastic skin, and pretty good hair, but her clothes are a disaster! It was only the 24th picture in the gallery that finally had something that looked good on her.

If she insist on wearing a belt will someone please show her where her waist line is. Good grief. Also, gotta show those bear arms. Not sure why that is so important to her, but it sure doesn't show the class of a 1st lady.

i agree, she is an attractive woman with horrible taste in clothes- if anyone else wore a belt with a winter coat they'd make the worst dressed list.

Michelle Antoinette just proves that position and wealth have nothing to do with class and dignity. She dresses so shabbliy (with the exception on one or two gowns). One would think that with all the designer help she could dress to make her top and bottom look balanced. Instead she continuously wears clothes that prove she is lacking in all the wrong places and is grossly over-endowed in her poorest asset. And since when are arm pits appropriate for official functions?

I cannot believe how rude and nasty the comments are re: Michelle Obama clothes. She is very stylish . I don't recall such rude remarks about other first ladies. People should look at themselves 1st before judging others.

Someone need to tell her that tall high waisted women should wear a dropped waist
skirt and dress She looks so out of proportion in her "mom waist" skirts and dresses.Same goes for empire style dresses. Empire is fine for a long gown but in a shorter length it makes her too long on the bottom. Be brave were a higher heel,it's OK to be taller than your man.

I think she looks great. She is a beautiful woman. I agree with others here that they should look at themselves first before casting any statements. Our young people, male and female, think sloppy is style. Our nation has become to relaxed and does not recognize style when they see it.
