DIY Design: How to Make Children's Clothes

- Getting Started: If this is your first sewing project that you have done with your child, you will want to give easy beginner tasks that will give a sense of accomplishment. Sewing a button or hem, even if only on a practice piece of fabric teaches essential hand-sewing skills. Or make an accessory to go with the outfit. Teaching your child to sew is a wonderful way to spend time together, while passing on a beloved hobby.
- Measuring Up: Children's bodies are straight up and down, making them easier to fit. On the other hand, growing kids will need garments with a bit of room. Taking measurements carefully is important, and for kids, the chest, waist, hips, and height are the essential numbers.
- Picking Patterns: One of the most enjoyable parts of the sewing project is picking out the pattern. I used to spend long hours in the fabric store poring over pattern books, trying to find that perfect outfit. This is where I learned how to look up patterns by number and read pattern envelopes to learn the best fabric, proper notions, and fit. Simplicity, Butterick and McCall's are available in most fabric stores and have a wonderful selection of fashionable children's clothing. You can also find unique selections online, including vintage and heirloom patterns.
- Choosing Fabrics: Fabric for children's clothing can be either knit or woven. A lightweight woven cotton, such as a happy quilting print, is probably the easiest textile to use while teaching your child to sew. Children often have strong fashion opinions and the fabric store is where they can exercise them. A favorite piece of material is definitely the best way to get that project started. Happy sewing!
