Ann Taylor Site Glitch Reveals Photoshop Before-and-Afters

Wanna lose weight? Just have a couple ribs removed. Or go on a Photoshop diet. Photo: Ann Taylor

Just as some fashion magazines and celebrities are crying out for unretouched photos, the Photoshop fairy strikes again.

This time, it's Ann Taylor in the hot seat. The folks at Jezebel spotted an error on the label's website yesterday, which allowed visitors to see photos both before and after retouching.

We don't know about you, but we're quite envious of the model's body in the unretouched pic. The "after?" Well, that just looks downright painful. Her two thighs are the size of one of our arms. And that waist? Our 5-year-old child might not be narrow enough to pull off that look.

After the glitch was reported, Ann Taylor fixed it and apologies were sent to Jezebel: "We want to support and celebrate the natural beauty of women, and we apologize if, in the process of retouching, that was lost."

The representative continued, "We agree, we may have been overzealous on some retouching but [going] forward we'll make sure to feature more real, beautiful images."

This isn't the first time Jezebel caught Ann Taylor Photoshoppin'. Back in May, the site noticed models with proportions that would make Barbie blush.

Had it with companies Photoshopping models most women would kill to look like? Here's how one British retailer is trying to change things.

If ya'll fat tub o'lards out there were sooooo pleased with your looks you wouldn't have to resort to name calling. Picking on thin little girls. Not everyone is a size 0? Yeah well not everyone is a size 16 either! You're all just a bunch of miserable bullies and as we all know misery loves company. Get over it and pick on somebody your own size! Maybe a sumo wrestler!

That is so uncalled for..people like you are what causes women to be insecure with themselves..you must be a young teenager who has no respect for yourself or anyone else..because only some one who has has no respect for anyone else or themselves would resort to name calling..GROW UP and when you're ready to have an adult conversation then you should come back and respond.

As someone who is a size 0, I have to say, you're totally wrong! This women was obviously photoshopped when she didn't mean to be. People aren't picking on "thin little girls" they're picking on unnecessary editing of models. You might want to read the article again.

I know we have an obesity problem here in the US, but the photoshopped picture is just absurd. Just how skinny do these fashion designers think women should be?

what is wrong with people? The model has a gorgeous figure in the first pic. The after - she looks disgusting!

I can see the differences in the photos, however, I don't think photoshopped pictures matter that much. I have never paid attention to the model in the clothes but the actual clothes they are trying to sell. It took me actually looking for the differences to see them. The first thing I noticed that was photoshopped was the lack of wrinkles in one photo to the other. The second thing I noticed was the greater detail in the neckline of the second photo. Seriously people its all about your perception! If you concentrate (read obsess) over how others look then that's all you will see. I saw a woman in a tank top with a really stupid ruffle, jeans and a cool bracelet.

Sadly, someone over there is being paid good money to do terrible photoshop retouching.

I cast a jaundiced eye upon Ann Taylor's claims, since this isn't the first time they've been caught altering model's bodies so drastically. It is one thing to do minor retouching to remove a wayward bra strap or unflattering shadow - quite another to change the dimensions of a person's physique to the point of creating what appears to be an alien masquerading as a human. The before pic reveals an enviable figure. The after, well, to call it unrealistic, is kind.

Come on Midge! What's your problem? Your comment actually supports the article... and you think it didn't!? That was the whole point. Some of us are stick people (I assume you) and some of us are full-figured and every size in-between. As a former full-figure gal and now a normal size 12, I just think photoshopping pictures to make women look much smaller than they are is wrong. The model looks great in the "before" picture. She is already slim and looks very fit. The "after" picture makes her head larger than her waistline! Don't hate just because you don't have curves... I don't hate just because I do! I'm not a tub o'lard... and besides... everyone knows that real men like nice smooth curves.

MARY PLEASE ..... your trying to justify being fat by saying you have curves and I'm pretty sure as you said being a size 12 they are NOT very smooth. Any man who loves cellulite is gross!!

The funny thing is: the unretouched picture on the left looks way better than the one on the right. What were they thinking???

They were thinking what nearly all fashion magazine editors think: they want their models SKINNY! It may not be what the "normal" woman looks like, but fashion models have never looked like "normal" women because they're not normal women. They're fashion models.

In the very narrow world of fashion photography, tall and skinny photographs best. "Plus size" is and will always be a much tougher sell because fashion designers love a long body with minimal curves to hang their clothes on, and fashion photographers love to photograph that long, stringy body.

Wow, I'm am so appalled at midge's reply. I don't understand why the "mean" mentallity proliferates on the internet. No one is complaining about petite, size zero girls. My daughter in law is a size zero. My daugter is a size 8. They are both beautiful! The problem arises when an already svelt model gets photoshopped to look like a carricature of Olive Oil! The point is, the picture was perfect to begin with until the layout artist got carried away by disfiguring the model. It's sad that you have to be so hateful over a poorly doctored photo.

I have suffered with an eating disorder for most of my life, and while I don't blame the media, this sort of manipulation by the fashion industry certainly doesn't help. What messages are they trying to send here? It pains me to think of the young impressionable girls who could receive the message that beauty equals being impossibly (literally) thin. An apology is a start, now how about some changes in how women are portrayed in fashion!

Crazy...Looking at the re-touched pic made me want to go eat a big mac....All the trouble women go thru to look good yet we love our men as God made em....Do men actually prefer the bones or is it our own insecurities? I have gotten more compliments with extra lbs., less wrinkles, firmer look, curves...Come on, guys, which do you really prefer?

The model looks fabulous in the first pic. Why would anyone choose to modify that? The 'after' pic looks very fake.

I think the real photo looks better - more in proportion. They need to stop using these concentration-camp-look models and show REAL people to give a more accurate idea of what the clothing will look like.

I believe the expression "jump your bones" helps explains our point of view.

If we had meant to say "jump your lard," we would have said "jump your lard."

Does that clear it up for you?
