We always knew Jennifer Aniston was a funny girl, but now she's taking it to a whole 'nother level by transforming herself into original "Funny Girl" Barbra Streisand for the September issue of Harper's Bazaar.
In the portfolio, shot by Mark Seliger, "The Switch" star gets an old-school Streisand makeover, recreating a number of the diva's signature looks from her classics "Funny Girl" (1968) and "What's Up Doc?" (1972).
In one photo, Aniston reimagines Streisand's wardrobe fitting for the role of "Funny Girl" Fanny Brice in a faux fur leopard-print Moschino coat, Albertus Swanepoel hat, and Louis Vuitton pumps.
In another, she poses dramatically in profile wearing a mod bob, heavily kohled eyes, Chopard earrings, a gold Gianfranco Ferré dress, and, of course, acrylic talons.
"The nails were like, 'There she is!'" says Aniston, who listened to Streisand's 1964 hit "People" while getting gussied up as her idol. Longtime hairstylist Chris McMillan was actually the one who convinced Aniston to pay tribute.
"He is, of course, hair obsessed," she says, "and I'm a Barbie doll for him. So, whenever we'd see great pictures of Barbra or a movie, he'd be like, 'You have to do an homage to Barbra.'"
And thus a shoot was born.
"Barbra inspires me because there isn't anything she hasn't done that she wanted to do, especially as a female in the time when her generation was prime. She's a true renaissance woman," says Aniston, who met Streisand at a New Year's Eve party a few years ago.
"I had a long conversation with Barbra about directing because I directed a short a couple years ago, and if I don't do it again soon, I'm going to burst out of my skin. And we also love interior design."
As for being a funny girl herself, Aniston, who has certainly known her share of heartbreak, tells the magazine, "People laugh at me. Sometimes I know why, and sometimes I don't. But I can pretty much find humor in anything. That is a necessary part of life. I don't want to say laughter is healing, because it sounds corny, but it's a release."
