Hairstyles by Face Shape: The Perfect Haircut for a Square Face With Curly Hair

Ever thought of choosing your hairstyles by face shape? The right haircut and hairstyle can draw attention to your best facial features, and shift attention from anything you want to disguise. In our video series, The Perfect Haircut for Your Face Shape, we explore the styles that look best on round, oval, square, long, and heart shaped faces.

While bangs are still very much in style, celebrity hair stylist Chaz Dean says they can be unflattering on a square face.

Just take a look at our latest hair makeover client Jill Jordan.

Jill has naturally long, wavy hair that some women pay a pretty penny for. The challenge is not with the length, but the way it's currently styled. Jill's bangs are closing in her face, shortening the length and making it appear more square.

By simply taking the bangs and sweeping them off to the side, Jill's face goes from square to more of an oval shape. Her eyes and cheekbones become the center of attention and her neck instantly appears longer.

To add balance, Dean also takes the length of her hair up a few inches and cuts more layers into the sides and the crown, helping to create fullness.

Whether Jill chooses to blow dry her hair straight or let it air dry curly, she now has a hairstyle that works with her face shape, rather than against it.

"It's gorgeous!" Jill says.

Speaking of gorgeous, did you see this hair makeover for a round face with curly hair?

She looked so much better (younger, too!) in the before picture.

She look better in the after pic because her hair doesn't look so clumped together.

I think she looked younger before the hair was madeover. I also liked her hair style better, in the first picture.

well, her hair looked a bit dry and unruly in the first picture. But the banks flattered her far more that the second one. besides Banks are in again.

I have to agree. She looks so much younger and prettier in the before picture. Also, the after-hairstyle makes her face look way too long.

She looks old with the flat do. The bangs and make her look younger. What a horrible makeover.

Definitely she looks much better in the before picture. With her after hairdo we can see the whole shape of her face which is not flatering and also makes her look older. Sorry.

She looks great in the before picture and the after looks like a blast from the past...and not a good one...outdated looking...too bouncy...Bangs or not, she looks better in the first picture without the points of her hair striking the sides of her face as in the after. All she needs is a little more of a brush of the upper sides of her hair in the before and she would be perfect. Why call it a makeover but rather a makeunder...bad.

At least in the before picture she didn't look like a chipmunk! With her so called make over her face looks really weird, she was able to hide some of the imperfections of her square face and the lack of bangs makes her look way older than she actually is. All she needed was hair food to take that dry look out of that washed up style and do something with it other than let it dry and stick up.

The only reason her face looks a little longer in the second photo is because the picture was taken lower from the top, if you notice the top of pictures and her shoulders are lower. Her hair does look better, softer, more flattering, and younger in the first picture. Also, her hair is not dry looking, that appears to be gel to make it more in control and give it more contrast.

I agree with the women here (even though there's a man profile shadow?). I think the bangs gave Jill a softer (and younger) image and brought out her eyes more instead of the square jaw. I think your average guy too (no male comments here) would agree the before hair style with some styling serum on the fly away dry ends is more flattering. The new style aged her about 10 years and looks too primped and unnatural.

This woman looked beautiful, young and adorable before. I was so glad to hear some of the other comments because I thought maybe I'm going crazy! WHY do we persist in letting gay men define what a beautiful woman is? That makes no sense to me.

She went from looking like somebody's sister to somebody's mother. Horrible makeover.

The new style to me looks like a glamorized football helment. She looks radiant, happy and young in the before picture. She is still pretty but the new style emphasizes the squareness of her face-hair appears like an attachment to a paper doll!

Just to let all of you know i disagree with all of you saying what you like and don't, you people didn't have to put out there what you don't like it. This comment box was for great comments not mean one's , she looks 10x's better then before. What you guys didn't realize or think about is what she likes this wasn't for your rude comments! Oh and by the way people i want Dean to do my hair!
