Women's Hair Loss: Top Reasons Your Hair is Falling Out

Up to 30 million females suffer from women's hair loss. Photo: Getty Images

Up to 30 million females suffer from women's hair loss and noticeably thinning hair, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

As disturbing as this can be for anyone, for women, hair loss can be downright devastating.

"Men like to have hair. Women have to have hair," said Dr. Michael Reed, a Manhattan-based dermatologist, director of the NYU hair loss clinic and the NYU hair transplant clinic and author of "Women's Hair Loss: The Hidden Epidemic".

"Hair loss in women appears to be more prevalent and occurring at an earlier age," said Reed. "Women today are assuming more roles that used to be male roles and the stress from this can cause male hormone levels to increase which could increase hair loss."

Reed told StyleList that although there are many types of hair loss in women, most patients have one (or a combination) of the "Big Three" conditions:

Female Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia)
This type of hair loss is genetic and can be seen any time after puberty with an increasing occurrence as we age. In fact, 50 percent of all women will suffer from this form of hair loss at some point in their lives, most notably after the age of 40. While this condition may be pre-determined in our genes, certain factors such as stress, medications, the pill or hormones can jump-start the thinning process.

Telogen Effluvium (Physiologic Shedding)
Mainly seen in women, this type of hair loss is typically related to an underlying cause versus genetics. An excessive number of hair follicles can suddenly stop growing due to pregnancy, illness or surgery. It can also be caused by hormonal shifts, anemia or a thyroid imbalance.

Alopecia Areata (Allergic Alopecia)
This condition is characterized by the appearance of patchy "bald spots". It can be caused by an allergic reaction within the body or an immune system imbalance. It may be limited and disappear without any treatment, or it may be widespread.

Other types of hair loss can include Traction Alopecia, hair loss related to the way the hair is styled including tight braids, excessive pulling, weaves or hair extensions. There are also a number of less common conditions due to fungus infections, scalp disorders, chemical treatments and inflammation.

Spencer Kobren, founder of the American Hair Loss Association and nationally syndicated radio talk show host of "The Bald Truth" told us that women's hair loss is a much bigger problem than people think.

"This is a $3.5 billion dollar industry," said Kobren. "And while many environmental factors can contribute to hair loss, they are simply 'flipping the genetic switch'." Meaning, stress, sleep or diet alone is not likely to be the cause of the problem. If you have hair loss in your genes, it's going to happen. But there are solutions that can slow this process down or sometimes stop it for a while.

The goal, Kobren said, is to get to the root of the problem and treat that.

Hair loss solutions can include a number of medical and surgical options and medications including hair replacement, hair restoration, laser therapy, topical creams and certain birth control pills. Lifestyle shifts can also help with diet, supplements, exercise and stress reduction, but only if those factors were contributing to the hair loss in the first place.

Be wary of the claims you see on infomercials and in the backs of magazines as 99 percent of them don't work according to Kobren.

Also, be careful of testosterone. While our hormones do shift as we age and natural levels may drop, taking additional testosterone could trigger hair loss.

To find an accurate diagnosis and the best solution for your hair loss, it's best to talk with a trusted Internist, Gynecologist or Endocrinologist. "Your doctor should always be your first line of defense," said Kobren.

For more information on women's hair loss, visit Dr. Reed's web site or Spencer Kobren's site. Both have a number of helpful resources.

I was on birth control pills for medical reasons for over 30 years. When I turned 50, my doctor took me off the pills because of menopause. I almost immediately went into menopause & then approx. 3 months later, my hair started falling out. I was devestated! I went to a Dermotologist - he was young - and didn't seem to have a clue. In doing research - the hormonal change due to not taking the birth control pills & then going into menopause was a huge factor. My hair actually came back & now it's very dry, but thicker. I can't wait for this "stage" to get over!!! I believe taking vitamins will help. Most importantly - we aren't alone.

I have total hair loss over my entire body, & no doctor so far has been able to diagnose why. It started with alopecia areata & has continued until now it's alopecia universalis. I have hypothyroidism & take medication every day for it. I stay tired a lot & have some stress. My husband, who passed 3/20/09, had multiple sclerosis & was very sick & bed bound for the last three years of his life. Also, he was in & out of the hospital several times over those three years, & I was with him every day helping him as much as I could in the hospital & was his caregiver at home. I really miss him. I have problems with getting hot & have trouble cooling off. I don't know if my hair loss is caused by my thyroid, stress, hormones, or some other problem. I just wish I could somehow find a treatment that would help me get my hair back, especially on my head. I wear a wig because I can't stand being bald, & it is really hot during the summer heat. If anyone has any recommendation, feel free to e-mail me. Thanks.

Beatrice.....Wen is this hair conditioner that replaces shampoo and conditioner...it feels like a conditioner only...I buy it on QVC. My friend also buys it and loves it even more than me. It's for all types of hair...anyone..check out the qvc thing...it's very mellow on your hair..I think it's just so much more less stressful on my hair and that's why my hair is fuller and I have so much less in the drain. It cost more but lasts a long time...it's worth trying definitely. bye, lori

Aluminum. As a hairstylist I have noticed a considerable amount of women with hair loss. One of the key factors to hair loss can be found in something you use on a daily basis--deoderant. High levels of metals in your body cause hair loss. Try it for a month, Crystal deoderant, or a brand called Naturally Fresh, are both good alternatives to underarm desmellers. Both are nonsticky, as I found with Tom's, but are good as a deoderant not an antiperspirant. The aluminum works to block the pores in the underarms and the body coinsidently absorbs this as often as we apply it. As I said, try it for a month and find out for yourself. I have practically my whole salon using it, and quite a few clients. Two in particular went from seeing scalp to not seeing any scalp at all, even I was extremely amazed. Not for everyone, but for many. Aluminum also causes breast cancer, alzheimers, and parkinsons.

My hair is getting thin as I get older. I don't have dandruff but I get those little pink pimples that appear on my scalp, with inflammation on my scalp, if I scratch it or rub my head. My doctor said it was scalp folliculitis. He wasn't much help at all. Gave me antibiotic. Didn't help much. Came back. Like I said, I don't have dandruff. Just those pimples that appear. What kind of treatment or shampoo can I use for this problem. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there with these pimples.

Hi Courtney, I'm so sorry to hear what you've been going thru.
I don't know medically why that happens, but I do know it happens to everyone that goes thru chemo, some times it comes back better, and it can change again.
Just let it happen, and enjoy the riide, there is nothing you can do to control it.
You can color it, cut it, wear a hairpiece to add more hair ( I do that on the above blog) But other than that It's coming from inside.
The most important thing is that you stay well, Forever!!
Best of luck to you,
If you need to talk about it, please feel free to e-mail me at:

I was taking a selenium 200 mcg supplement for 4 months and my hair started falling out. I went off of it 5 weeks ago and my hair is still falling out in clumps. You can see scalp everywhere and I'm 35. Do you know how long it takes before hair starts growing back after mineral toxicity? :(

I have had it all checked. I've been to an Endocronologist. They did an indepth blood check. Testosterone and Estrogen levels are normal. The Dr. said one thing they could do was to medicate so no Testosterone is present. The only place I have not been was to the dermatologist. Of course the insurance won't pay for that. It is not a necessary health issue. Like the dentist, we can all function without hair and teeth. I was told "Male Pattern Balding" . "DDD" I do not see anything male there. Or it could be stress. Try to remove yourself from stressful situations. 3 kids and a job! SURE I'll just pack up and move away by myself. I have been losing my hair (noticably) since I am 28 years old. My husband said he will have to tattoo my head when it gets too bad.

No really good info from the other women on what to do with thinning hair. I really need continuing help as do the other millions of baby boomers who have thinning hair. I was just diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy. starting to lose my hair in April of this year was much more devastating.!!!!

I have been losing my hair since high school and I am 27 now.I am also a hairstylist which is great in ways of having knowledge and recources as far as hair is concerned, but also saddening when I hear clients with thick beautiful hair complain.I have read every article, tried every vitamin, been on the up and up about hair restoration and cloning ect.Let me say this, if the reason for your hair loss is genetic, I'm sad to say theres not much that can be done. You can take minoxidil, biotin, and use gentile product which will improve your hair or at least slow down the shedding process which may help but thats about it. There is much new research with ACELL and Matristem bieng used to duplicate cells and kick resting cells into growing again, but much more research is needed and I can only hope that in the next few years treatment with success will be available.( LISTEN ABOUT IT ON THEBALDTRUTH.COM). Ive worn hair extension, hair pieces since age 17. YOU are not alone. I can say I may never accept my hair loss and I will always look for solutions, but I do hope to be more more comfortable with my thin hair knowing that I am not alone in this struggle especially at such a young age. Good luck and god bless.

I've suffered from significant hair thinning in the past two years and being a female in my early twenties, I naturally became very self-conscious. I used to lose handfuls of hair after washing with shampoo and conditioner but since my hair tends to get oily very quickly, I had to wash it everyday. After adapting a strict vitamin regime and cutting down stress, the extreme shedding subsided...but for some reason, no matter what high quality strengthening/organic/expensive product I used, my hair was so limp, thin, and grew so slowly that I kept it short, thinking I'll never have long yet healthy looking hair again.

I have read that DHT and sebum buildup are significant contributors to hair shedding and one of the ingredients -- saw palmetto, is a natural dht inhibitor. Oily scalps are also prone to hair loss/thinning so I needed a gentle but effective cleansing and clarifying shampoo. I must say the Volume products from Shielo Hair has SAVED my hair. I used to have the longest, thickest head of hair just 2-3 years ago and this shampoo has stopped the thinning/shedding & makes my hair so much thicker that it might just look like it used to in a few months...

Hope this helps anyone skeptical of trying the Shielo Volume products, i know I was at first but now it's an essential.
