For the first time ever, DailyCandy is launching a Fashion Week series in which it profiles nine Big Apple-based indie designers from the inception to completion of their Spring 2011 collections -- and, of course, all of the drama that unfolds in between.
Viewers get a chance to see a behind-the-seams look at fashion designers Chris Benz, Eviana Hartman, Samantha Pleet, Tom Scott, LaQuan Smith, Ann Yee, Whitney Pozgay, milliner Albertus Swanepoel and Fenton/Fallon jeweler Dana Lorenz as they create mood boards, go to model castings, shoot look books and engage in entertaining Q&As, all in the comfort of their own homes and studios.
To go along with its documentary series (which lasted over the course of 3-4 months), DailyCandy will sell five of the designers' current Fall 2010 collections on its sample sale site, Swirl by DailyCandy, in a virtual-style pop-up shop starting September 8 and ending September 14.
"For months, DailyCandy editors have been playing 'fly-on-the-wall' with these nine talents," Janet Ozzard, DailyCandy's editor-in-chief, said in a statement. "They gave us great access to their process and their daily lives. This unique close look, combined with the ability to purchase from designers' current lines, makes a great, unified Fashion Week experience for our readers."
Also, in continuation with DailyCandy's support of emerging designers, and to celebrate the brand's 10th anniversary, the company is launching the Start Small, Go Big contest, which will award three winners $10,000, a write-up on DailyCandy's famed email newsletter, promotion through Twitter and access to big shots in the fashion industry.
If you're a young designer looking to get a leg up, note that entries for the contest will be accepted through September 6 (enter here!) with one applicant from the Fashion, Food and Fun categories winning a trip to New York (plus one guest) and a spot at the DailyCandy Academy, a one-day workshop where they can refine their small business skills and meet one-on-one with established members of their respective industries.
