British Magazine Essentials Bans Models in Favor of Real Women

Models? We don't need no stinkin' models!

British women's magazine Essentials has decided to replace catwalkers and celebrities with real women in response to reader demand, it has announced.

The decision comes after a recent survey found that more than 70 percent of readers said they would prefer to see real women than professional models.

(Fair enough. We've all had our share of Gisele overload.)

Essentials' October issue -- on sale now -- is kicking things off by featuring 10 actual readers, including a 71-year-old grandmother, on its cover.

According to the magazine, the new cover girls were selected after submitting their photos and bios in June. Essentials is also welcoming readers to apply to pose for future issues (but not so fast -- you have to live in the UK).

"We're looking for amazing women that really reflect the magazine's readership, so women of all shapes, ages, and sizes," style director Lucy Turner says in video about the new campaign.

"It's a real celebration of Essentials women."

Both the cover and editorial pages will feature readers, though advertisements will include professional models.

Essentials is not the first women's magazine to give models the boot. As we reported previously, German magazine Brigitte also recently made the switch from catwalkers to civilians.

What do you think? Would you rather see models, or average women? Leave a comment!

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga is posing as the Statue of Liberty on V's new cover.

I guess it is playground level. Bet you still weighed as much as you did before that Big Mac torpedoed you.

I think it is great to regular women dressed up to show how easy it is to pull off a good look. As for the men saying if they wanted ordinary they would go to the mall; men don't read these magazines anyway!

Women's appearance does seem to be measured against these attenuated, scrawny stick models, and anyone who says they are not like that seem to be slagged off as being fat, which is untrue, unfair and irrelevant.
Many men seem to want us to look like that, but I bet if you put one of those 6ft tall size zero skeletons in a room with my 5ft 2 size 6 daughter and asked people who is the more beautiful, they'd not say it was the model. Why isn't my daughter a model then? well, apart from being disqualified by her height and womanly shape, she's too busy being a research chemist! She's one of the many millions of beautiful women living a real life. I'd say if it's a high fashion magazine full of stupidly expensive stuff, let the unrealistic scarecrows continue in their own little world. If it's supposedly trying to sell real fashion to real women, lets have real women on the pages!
As an aside, these stick insects may look ok as clothes racks, but I bet they'd never make the grade as pinups. It would be interesting to see a comparison of the body measurements of these models compared to some of those in, erm, 'men's' magazines. Come on, surely there's one guy out there willing to do some research on that!

BRAVO!! Finally....some corporation, some ad company, decided to do something smart for a change. Maybe this will swing the pendulum back towards the middle. Those poor starving models can finally eat real food again. And the designers will be forced back to reality when they realize the only way to stay in business is to design clothes that their publicist's cousin would wear (especially if they DON'T have 3/4 sleeves; after all, those Wisconsin winters are pretty darn cold). Who started that trend anyway? The emaciated angry looking, sullen model (I suppose if I hadn't had a decent meal or a chocolate bar for 6 years I'd look that way too)? Why are we, the public at large, such a mass of insecurity that we follow along with whatever the ad boys, big corps throw at us like sheep being led to slaughter? REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES! REAL WOMEN SMILE! REAL WOMEN WEAR CLOTHES THAT DON'T MAKE THEM LOOK LIKE THE DENIZENS OF A NURSERY SCHOOL DRESSED THEM! AND YES, VIRGINIA, REAL WOMEN WEAR PANTYHOSE!

All of the fat and unattractive people are rejoicing on here tonight. They can take attractive women out of a magazine, but you're all still fugly and out of shape.

Yes, you're right. No men subscribe to Victoria's Secret's catalog to beat off. Those stick figure girls make "terrible" pin-ups, and NO man could ever find them attractive. Another angry fugly.

Truthhurts,
What does it say about our society if we embrace your claim that female "beauty" is only represented by 6 foot tall women with size 0 hips, a figure possesed by a statistical 1% of the population; litteraly a genetic mutation that is biologicaly unatainable by any normal woman? Are you aware that right at half a dozen major models around the world have starved to death (litteraly DIED from lack of food!) in pursuit of a "perfect" figure in the past four years?
BTW, you better thank God for Victorias Secret because you're never getting a real woman with a nasty attitude like that. Unless all that anger is comming from a woman who is starving herself, in which case you need to realize before it's too late that you look like a famin victim, not a victorias secret model.

flybabydizzy, I can only offer one number off the top of my head...Marilyn Monroe was a modern size 10!

Debbie, I would have to agree with you. I would think it very difficult to be a woman in todays society. Madison ave has ruined women. The images that are presented give a false sense of importance. I also believe that on an underlying level it has contributed to in some way some of the issues that cause rifts in relationships. Men and women have become so materialistic that we don't even see each other, only what we have and if it fits the fashion du jour. Our self worth and esteem on both sides is constantly under attack.

I'm not a fitness guru. Just trying to make a point. I wear size 9 because I take care of myself. I know for some strange reason there are men out htere who like the cow sizes - but my man loves me.
