Beauty's Emerging Green Packaging Trend Bids Goodbye to Plastic Bottles

Beauty is beginning to say so long to old-school plastic.

Two of the industry's biggest players -- Whole Foods and Procter & Gamble -- are passing new regulations for sustainable and recyclable packaging that are causing a growing rumble in the marketplace, where other brands are beginning the shift to using renewable materials.

The new Whole Foods regulations go into effect this month and mandate that suppliers use packaging materials that are easily reused or recycled, are non-toxic, and that they switch from plastic to glass when possible.

"We are strengthening our commitment to reducing, reusing and recycling waste," Jeremiah McElwee, senior whole body coordinator for Whole Foods tells StyleList.

"We have switched to post-consumer recycled bottles for most of our store-brand personal care and nutritional supplement products, and have implemented new responsible packaging guidelines for all of the company's more than 1300 personal care product suppliers nationwide," adds McElwee.

Insiders say that much like regulations on organic beauty products passed by Whole Foods this summer, the new rules will cause many brands to adapt their packaging, regardless of wherever else they are sold.

Meanwhile, supermodel and Pantene endorser Gisele Bundchen announced P&G's plans last month to switch to sustainable packaging made from sugarcane produced in her home country of Brazil. The packaging will make the switch over the next couple of years on P&G's top three global brands -- Pantene Pro-V, CoverGirl and MaxFactor -- the last of which is no longer sold in the U.S., but is still sold internationally.

After consulting a green specialist, this brand switched to eco-friendly packaging earlier this year. Customers also said they tossed the paper cartons the products used to ship in, and now 1.6 metric tons of paper has saved in just the two months since shipping cartons have been discontinued.

Sensé Beautiful Science line, $15.54 - $51

"This initiative, together with others you'll be hearing about from us soon, will help meet the needs of women around the world who've been telling us that they want more environmentally-friendly products with no trade-offs in performance, aesthetic or value," says vice-chairman of P&G beauty and grooming, Ed Shirley.

While brands like The Body Shop and Stila have long had a history of eco-friendly packaging, the new changes from a giant like P&G signal a change in the mainstream marketplace.

Could this mean an end to the layers of plastic sheeting that infamously seal -- or should we say armor -- drugstore cosmetics? We hope so.

From plastic to glass? I hope not. Shampoos, conditioners, very dangerous if the containers are made of glass.

I agree, glass bottles can be dangerous. do you realize how many people died from the 1600's to 1980 because they were too stupid to be careful using glass bottles. The cost of oil was cheap enough at 25.00/barrel then to make plastic bottles, not now. I'll bet you even bought soap on a rope-LOL

Vic, it isn't only the "cost" of the petroleum products to make plastic, it is the amount of garbage that is created from these products which is filling the landfills all over the world. It doesn't break down.

I remember when it began to rain last year while I was carrying my groceries home in a paper bag. As I chased my cans down the street, I cursed our idiot mayor and whoever among his stooges had decided to ban rainproof plastic bags in San Francisco. Paper is certainly biodegradable, for the process started even as I was carrying the bag home.

And has anyone considered what glass bottles will do to the price of beverages? Since they are much heavier than plastic, freight costs will increase, hardly to be borne by the merchants. That is in addition to the hazard of dealing with broken glass.

@tooitu well buy reusable bags, they are less than a dollar per bag and you normally get a discount on your grocery purchase for each reusable bag used. And you call the mayor an idiot...

The glass packages are a great idea for people who aren't going to complain about dropping them. We can't be willing to pollute the planet on the off chance we might cut our foot open. Http://www.savecreatively.com has some great deals on samples and bargains.

If it helps the enviroment I would rather have a cut and a clean planet everyday. People are going to have to actually teach their children to be careful yes I know a long shot but if you keep letting your kids get cut up I'm sure they will take them away anyhow. Parents have gotten soft a little... dangerous may go a long way in making people pay attention and take care of their children. One of those things that the result outways the means. Personally I think any foods taste better when stored in glass. What I would give for a mountain dew in the glass bottle.. just not the same in a can or plastic. Hope the food industry is next in this revolution.

Glass beverage containers are an EXTREMELY bad idea. Invariably some are smashed on streets, on sidewalks, in parks, etc., and produce far more dangerous litter than plastic bottles. What on EARTH is Whole Foods thinking? Most plastics are recyclable nowadays. Switching to glass is INSANE, and should be banned by government -- if not by the Federal Government, then by state and/or local governments.

Paper or plastic...It's about time we went back to paper. I hated it when they started bagging everything in plastic. And glass....food taste better in it and cosmetics stay fresh longer. Plastics have expiration dates on water so if you have stored water in plastic the plastic not the water may have expired....glass is better. Have a bit of sense people. Life will not end because of some packaging. And schoonmakr....people aren't stupid. We don't need government to rule our lives, just common sense. If you break a bottle, clean it up for pete's sake...And eat some ice cream or something. YOu are too uptight....

Before "plastic" bottles and plastic used for everything, we had glass bottles for milk and juice and soft drinks. In some places, glass was not permitted like around a pool area for example. Beer still comes in glass and you can return the bottles for credit. In my day, kids would get their spending money from collecting glass bottles and turning them in to the grocery store.

If you read the article, glass is not being used for everything but, there are other sustainable packaging materials like sugarcane.

I hope you have regained your composer and relaxed and chilled from your frenzy over glass.

i wish ppl would stop being so ignorant to the fact that, the way we're living now is destroying us and our planet. plastic can be recycled yes, but thats not problem. the problem is that it spends years in a landfill before being recycled, and then it releases its chemicals into the air to melt it down and turn it into something else. get it. we just need to be open to new ideas, just because your life is convenient now doesnt make it right.

What an idiotic thing to say. We are being, and have been poisoned by plastics for far too long. Convenience to ourselves shouldn't be the only factor in the viability of an item in the marketplace. We should also consider the impact to ourselves and the environment.

Good grief, no! Please, going to glass is just ridiculous! It's bad enough having alcoholic beverages in glass containers, where drunks can litter our streets and trails with glass shards, or glass falling out of garbage trucks littering the front yards and walkways. Now we're going to get glass for shampoos and water? What the heck is wrong with aluminum containers? Or the paper type containers that soy milk comes in? Glass containers for shampoo-ludicrous!

Aluminum is one of the worst materials in regards of the environment. It takes several hundred years to break down. It takes a whole lot of chemicals to produce, and it's poisonous!!

And when you consider that aluminum is the most common metal in the world and 3rd most common element found in the Earth ( #1 oxygen @ 46%, #2 silicon @ 28%, #3 aluminum @ 8 % ) , one must wonder about it being the worst material for the environment.

What are you people on? Glass is more dangerous than chemical leaching plastic? That's ridiculous! Wake up and consider your future instead of convenience. Yes, most plastics can be recycled, but every time plastic is recycled it degrades. Recycled plastic drinking bottles can't ever be used for drinking bottles again...at best they might be recycled into a recycling bin or plastic lawn furniture...then what? If you're worried about it being broken on the street, how about you make an actual effort to clean up your neighborhoods instead of just stepping over it.
