Let your fingers do the talking with the season's most lusted-after shades for every budget.

LUST

Who other than Chanel could inspire waiting for nail polish? The new shade du jour is a greige-meets-khaki that makes going casual the chicest thing you can do.

Chanel Le Vernis in Khaki Vert, $25; chanel.com

MUST

Cargo fatigues have nothing on this smoked-up gunmetal green. Stroke on supershort, square nails for a finish that camouflages your intentions but never your sense of style.

Essie Nail Polish in Sew Psyched, $8; essie.com

Butter London 3 Free Lacquer in Bumster Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Yellow Kitty

Butter London 3 Free Lacquer in Bumster (left), Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Yellow Kitty (right). Photos courtesy of Butter London | Sally Hansen

LUST

This cheeky muted yellow is a tribute to Alexander McQueen's 1996 low-rise trousers that caused quite the stir with their crack-baring bums. Always the jester, that McQueen!

Butter London 3 Free Lacquer in Bumster, $14; butterlondon.com

MUST

The sunny side of this frothy yellow cream is that it's an all-in-one mani -- the polish serves as a growth treatment, base, color, and top finish. Kind of like your La Perla.

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Yellow Kitty, $7; drugstores nationwide

Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Waking Up in Vegas Sonia Kashuk Nail Colour in Tauped

Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Waking Up in Vegas (left), Sonia Kashuk Nail Colour in Tauped (right). Photos courtesy of Deborah Lippmann | Sonia Kashuk

LUST

Lady Gaga herself flaunted the unexpectedly feminine hue on the September cover of Vanity Fair, hurtling the creamy putty to iconic status. And you thought gray was for good girls!

Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Waking Up in Vegas, $16; lippmanncollection.com

MUST

A touch of taupe makes this pale gray flattering on all skin tones. Plus, at less than $5, you can save your pennies for that next big Louis splurge?

Sonia Kashuk Nail Colour in Tauped, $4.99; target.com

M.A.C. Cosmetics Nail Lacquer in Earthly Harmony OPI Nail Lacquer in Over the Taupe

M.A.C. Cosmetics Nail Lacquer in Earthly Harmony (left), OPI Nail Lacquer in Over the Taupe (right). Photos courtesy of M.A.C.| OPI

LUST

This creamy neutral wears well both at work and at play, so you can focus on being fabulous instead of repainting and waiting for your nails to dry come the weekend.

M.A.C. Cosmetics Nail Lacquer in Earthly Harmony, $13; maccosmetics.com

MUST

The summer may be over, but that doesn't mean you have to give up all things tan. Brush on this cashmere-rich version of the tone for nails that look sexy, even when covering up in the fall.

OPI Nail Lacquer in Over the Taupe, $8; opi.com

YSL Manicure Couture in Belle de Nuit Sula Paint & Peel in Crush

YSL Manicure Couture in Belle de Nuit (left), Sula Paint & Peel in Crush (right). Photos courtesy of YSL | courtesy of Sula

LUST

If you crave color when the cooler weather hits, YSL's newest purple will coat you in royalty. At a price like that, would you expect anything less?

YSL Manicure Couture in Belle de Nuit (includes gold tip polish), $30; yslebeautyus.com

MUST

After you paint Sula's grapey Merlot on your tips, you'll have to resist wanting to take it off. That's because the polish peels away in one tidy -- and addictive -- swoop. Don't say we didn't warn you!

Sula Paint & Peel in Crush, $9; sulabeauty.com

RGB Cosmetics Nail Lacquer in Steel American Apparel Nail Polish in Factory Grey

RGB Cosmetics Nail Lacquer in Steel (left), American Apparel Nail Polish in Factory Grey (right). Photos courtesy of RGB Cosmetics | American Apparel

LUST

Just like a city girl who traverses sidewalks in style, this industrial shade rides the latest fashion trend while still having the practical wearability of a pair of flats.

RGB Cosmetics Nail Lacquer in Steel, $14; rgbcosmetics.com

MUST

Depending on whether you pair it with dark denim or a comfy cardigan, this rumbling thundercloud hue can either run tough or soft -- just like you.

American Apparel Nail Polish in Factory Grey, $6; americanapparel.net

You have got to be kidding. As I was looking thru the list I kept thinking the next color was going to get better, the thing was it never did get better. I like the color of fall, copper, browns, etc.. why would I want something on my nails that would disappear into my hands or make them look like they were on a dead person. Come on people lets get something better than this.

GIGI --- your fashion style is the only thing that's dead --- you obviously prefer your hands/feet looking dirty and muddy ... think outside the box !!

Jen, Gigi's not the only one who thinks those colors are horrid. Which i agree they are - I would never wear any of those colors unless I decided to be a mummy or a zombie for halloween!

several years ago, OPI had a color called "No Name Yet" and I loved it and got so many compliments. It was a blue/grey and seemed to go with everything. I am a nurse and in my 60's now. I hope they have something similiar or I will give griege or grey a try.

Oh come on! You obivously cant accept aany idea of change! Some of the colors are sickly, but I actually like the greyish pinks. And I think the purple is quite fun. Personally, their choice of grey is to metalic..I use CHI Subway to Walstreet? I think thats the name. Matte grey with a hue of muted purple. I love using grey in stead of black! Grey is more sophistacted! Open your minds people!!

Absolutely disgusting. Anyone who has a lick of class would not wear these boring mundane colors. Leave these colors to the goth world.

What is so new about "greige" ...I used it over 30 years ago in design classes. Later, the trendy started calling in "taupe". Deliver us from capitalism.

The colors aren't as important as whether they are FORMALDEHYDE, TOULENE and PHTHALATE free! Nina Pro is the only color for me and even then, I limit my exposure to toxic chemicals.
Will check them out on SKIN DEEP database to see just how much CHANEL 'cares' about the safety of their product vs the 'profitability'.

For those who are criticizing others who don't care for these colors: just because we don't like these colors doesn't mean that we're adverse to change, have no fashion sense, etc. What we ARE is folks who don't let the design houses define what's right for us. Just because it comes from Chanel does not make it attractive. For those who like these colors - great! You have something to look forward to. The rest of us will pass.

@ Lara 091610 429 PM:

AMEN! But this is the way America has become. If anyone decides to disagree with anything, out of the wood works comes the rude people who happen to agree with something that others disagree with. I personally would NOT wear those ugly colors. They really do look like they belong on the hands of someone like Herman Munster, or the Mummy or for anyone dressing up as some kind of monster or Gothic character. Even a dead person's family members wouldn't put those colors on the hands of their dearly departed love ones.

Started dealing in nail polish over a year ago as a way to suppliment my now nonexistant income. Most of those colors won't make it, but I'd say the purple has a chance to linger on for a while.
