"It's an important night for Chanel, and for fashion," said Karl Lagerfeld with his usual understatement on Thursday night.

The Kaiser was in New York to open a new Chanel store in SoHo and host a dinner attended by a veritable fashion show of celebrities, including (deep breath): Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, Courtney Love, 'Gossip'-ers Blake Lively, Penn Badgley and Chace Crawford, models Jessica Stam, Karolina Kurkova, Daisy Lowe and Shalom Harlow, Rachel Bilson, Diane Kruger, Rachel Zoe, it-couple Paula Patton and Robin Thicke, and Liv Tyler. Oh, and Alexa Chung in the DJ both!

"I crave Chanel!" Rachel Zoe, who attended with her husband Rodger and design director Brad Goreski, who are familiar to fans from her Bravo series "The Rachel Zoe Project," told StyleList.

"I think about it, I dream of it, I collect it. I love it. It's timeless and also current." She said her pick from the fashion house's fall collection was their new season fur boots.

Sarah Jessica Parker said of Lagerfeld: "I think that he has the luxury to do whatever he wants and he's so smart about it -- he's in an incredible universe of his own. He's been both chimerical and artistic, and that's a very hard marriage to make."

Asked by StyleList what shows she was looking forward to this week, the actress of course said Halston (she's chief creative officer, and her first collection is Tuesday) but added: "I'm going to visit Mr. [Oscar] De La Renta and Narcisso [Rodriguez], for sentimental reasons."

But when another reporter asked how many pairs of shoes she owns, she surprised us by saying "seven." Really?

"I'm not a shopper, I'm really not," she said. "I'm an admirer. Seven pairs maybe? I think about [shopping] but I'm not good at it."

But the big show, of course, was Herr Lagerfeld. Speaking with the legendary designer is less like an interview and more like pitching practice: you throw the questions in his direction, and watch him bat them away.

Does he like the new location for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center? "I don't do a show here, so for me location is not really important."

How does he feel about being honored by F.I.T.'s Fashion Visionary Award on Friday? "I've got so many awards that I don't really know what I feel about awards."

What is his favorite website? "I hate the websites. I don't do website, not at all."

Can you explain what you like about Sarah Jessica Parker's style? "It is difficult -- it is a style you cannot explain. Every explanation is a worse explanation, so I prefer not to explain."

Where will you be Friday evening [Sept. 10] for Fashion's Night Out? " I will be in the Chanel shop and the Fendi shop -- where shop-keepers belong!"

Don't you go changing, Herr Lagerfeld.
