With her authentic French background, it's of little surprise that Catherine Malandrino looked to her native country for inspiration for Spring 2011. The unique presentation was set alongside the gorgeous reflective pool outside at Lincoln Center, with the models perched atop pedestals (thankfully the rain held off long enough not to ruin this elaborate staging). Colorful gauze floral dresses, neutral-toned jersey knits and black and cream macramé and knots came together in this eclectic collection.

THE SCOOP: Malandrino joined forces with fellow Frenchie Laurent Phillippon to create a simple, elegant hairstyle that worked with the feminine clothing. Val Garland worked her makeup magic for a look that was appropriately French, with a vibe that was fresh and youthful but still sexy.

"She's a peasant girl in the fields of Southern France," explained Garland. "The focus is all on the eyes, with blended colors meant to emulate the feeling of shadows." A riot of brown, copper and rust tones formed a wash of color; Garland started with creamy brown on the lid, blending it so that the color was more intense at the lashes and got gradually lighter towards the brows. She added touches of metallic shadow that "go on like liquid gold and bronze" up to the crease, allowing a concentration of color to settle at the lash line.

A small dab of balm rubbed onto the lids with her fingers helped Garland achieve a brown smoky effect. Bushy brows and black mascara completed the eye look, while cheeks were lightly accented with blush (and highlighted with the same balm used on the eyes) and lips were glossed with a nude tone. "It's highly pigmented but without shimmer, which is nice for a change," said Garland. Phillippon created an "earthy, easy chignon" placed on the nape of the neck, offset to the left. He used texturizing sprays and a diffuser to rough up the strands, formed a deep side part and encouraged the hair to sweep across the eyes. He gathered the hair into a ponytail and braided it loosely for shape, then twisted and pinned it into a loopy chignon. "It's not tight and perfect, but it's not too natural, either. It still has a definite style," he said.
