After wrapping a successful Spring 2011 fashion show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City, we invited Smilovic to chat live on Twitter with her fans.
Read on to get the scoop on Smilovic's fall accessory must-have, her advice for incorporating bold prints into your wardrobe, and how she juggles the roles of mother, wife, and designer. Plus, we're giving one lucky StyleList reader a Tibi Plaid Coating Reversible Coat from the Fall 2010 collection (details on how to enter are below).
Do you have any Fashion Week rituals that you can share?
AS: I believe in Karma -- so I'm a big tipper all through Fashion Week and we keep bags of candy around the office...sugar high!
Do you turn to certain sources for inspiration or does it just tend to happen spontaneously?
AS: My inspiration comes most often from travel, this year it was the Parisian topiary gardens.
If you could choose one song to describe your Spring 2011 collection, what would it be and why?
AS: The Pixies "La La Love You." This song got stuck in my head and sort of stayed there. I love the whistle.
Any Fashion Week superstitions you have?
AS: Not so much superstitions, but I'm extra nice to everyone and get a couple massages to keep me relaxed.
What is your one fall accessory you can't live without?
AS: I've been carrying a small Celine bag with a long strap -- it has cured me of my need to carry my whole life in a purse!
What type of advice would you give for someone who may be afraid to wear bold prints?
AS: Everything in moderation -- a pair of printed bottoms works so well with a white tuxedo shirt and neutral flats.
AS: We actually just re-modeled the Tibi store. So an overstuffed upholstered couch was my last purchase. It's gorgeous!
How do you manage the roles of mother, wife, and designer? And how does it influence your work?
AS: When I go home the Tibi-talk stops at the door. My husband (President of Tibi) and two sons definitely appreciate it.
What is your first fashion memory that inspired you to become a designer?
AS: My father was an artist, so he is a constant inspiration. I have wonderful memories of him painting when I was young.
Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that has shaped you?
AS: My first major order. Selling to a major store makes it a reality. Suddenly you're making 100s of pieces!
