Plus-Size Elena Miro Fashion Show Goes On After Being Dropped From Milan Calendar

While it seems that plus-size fashion and curvier, more realistic bodies have been on the rise of late (size 12 model Crystal Renn has starred in recent Chanel and Gaultier ads), the plus-size industry suffered a setback this week in Milan.

According to Agence France Presse, the plus-size Elena Miro show, which has opened Milan Fashion Week for the past five years, was kicked off the official fashion week schedule this season.

"Some labels just weren't in line with what ready-to-wear week should be," Mario Boselli, head of the Italian Chamber of Fashion, said of the new streamlined schedule that booted Miro and eleven other shows off the program.

"We wanted to champion the values of creativity to reaffirm Milan's role in the world."

Naturally, Elena Miro's designer Elena Miroglio thinks otherwise.

"[They said] the image of the brand [wasn't high enough] to transmit Italian fashion worldwide," says the designer, who still showed her collection at an off-site location, "but actually we don't agree with that because we think that every kind of woman should be represented on the catwalk."

Miro let her curvy models make that point at the show, which was inspired by feminine '50s silhouettes, including high-waisted bikinis, swing coats, and ladylike floral frocks.

In other words, exactly what ready-to-wear should be.

Speaking of plus-size fashion, check out our interview with plus-size model Crystal Renn, who walked in Elena Miro's show last season.

A size 12 is a plus size? - it's a NORMAL size for women!! Instead of calling a 12 plus size, the sizes below that should be called MINUS sizes!! With the obesity problem getting worse - and, by the way, a person who wears a size 12 is far from being obese - we go the opposite direction in what is normal, so no wonder practically everyone is considered overweight/obese!! It's nuts! It's the rich/NYC crowd that pushes that - you can never be too thin and too rich! And, many of them, such as Paris Hilton have to be hooked on cocaine to stay skinny. Great messages we're sending the young women of today!

size 12 is overweight unless you are really tall. why should the non overweight sizes below that be called minus sizes? you say practically everyone is considered overweight. if they are overweight== then they are overweight.

Daisy is right: size 12 looks downright obese on 5'3". I'm 5'3" and was a size 14 about fifteen years ago. I wasn't "curvy"; I was just plain fat. I looked awful, not "sexy" like these 6-foot runway models. Whether it's attractive depends totally on the height of the person carrying it and how it's distributed. Marilyn Monroe was a size 12 (or 14, depending on what source you read), but she was about 5'7" and hers was perfectly distributed. Same with Christina Hendricks, the Mad Men actress.

Daisy - Everybody has fat on their bodies. Some have more than others. If you are judging strictly by the BMI scale, a taller person can have more weight on them than a shorter person. The majority of "plus" models have "normal" BMI levels - they would not be considered "fat" by the medical community standard. You cannot judge a person by the size they wear. Oh, but the horror of a "fat" model! Please, let's get more. I'm all for it. I'm tired of grown women with the measurement sizes of a child.

Regardless, there should be no such thing as "plus" and "normal" fashion.

It was poor thinking to restrict the show to such a narrow range of sizes. If fashions in sizes starting around #8 were included, there would have been a lot more interest. Sure Americans are overweight, but an atmosphere where ALL the models are fat is not a happy one!

If the general standard for weight is 100 lb for 5 feet and 5 additional lb for each added inch over 5 feet, then someone 5 feet 9 inches could easily weight about 145 and NOT be considered plus size at all. Also someone that height can be plus or minus that weight and still be in the norm for normal weight. So, if that is the case, based on medical weight charts and medical and nutrional experts, then it is the fashion industry that is wrong. Fashion shows that contain models who are 5 foot 9 inches and weight 125 pounds ( often less) are malnourished and underweight. Most probably lack muscle tone of the heart and lungs as well as the muscular system just to maintain that weight. Apparently, haute couture cannot be shown on real people of normal weight because that does not sell clothes. Women hide behind the facade that they too can look like runway models or those in the magazines. And, some do, but not most. Our priority needs to change from strictly what we weight to what is healthy for our bodies and our image in general.

Since when is a size 12 considrered plus?????? From a mans pointof view it gets tiring seeing skin and bones out there. When I see a woman who is skin and bones I shake my head and say..............how can a guy get turned on by that? Besides if Milan took its head out from its ass and looked at the word out there they would clearly see that the real average size is 12 to 16 and that is not plus. How beautiful a woman looks with some meat on here to inhance the curves God gave her? I think being with a woman who was skin and bones would make me feel likea pedophile! When will the fashion industry take its rose colored glasses off and see what is really normal out there? Of course then if you look at it in a real way..................tell me in all honesty, would any of you ladies out there really be caught dead in half the frocks that sashay down that runway????? Its time women took over the fashion industry instead of guys who want to be them!

5ft 9 inches tall and 145 lbs would be a size eight which is a normal size. size 12 is overweight unless the person is very tall. curves are great on a woman of normal weight. No one said anyone had to like skin and bones. no one wants to make anyone feel like a pedophile! No one has to like the clothes the fashion industry puts out. How about just liking being not overweight and healthy.

I totally agree Logan! Making love to a skinny woman is like humping a bag of knives (all the bones poking out at you).
But making love to a plus size woman is all about the luxurious ride. Plus size women have a nice soft padding and a real sexy jiggle in all the right places. I think the only difference between a chubby woman and a skinny woman is that the chubby woman doesn't put her finger down her throat after every meal. Keep those skinny girls away from me.
There's an old Amish saying that goes "A plump wife, and a big barn...never did any man harm" :o)

Dear Susan, you may be skinny, but your personality, is just as unattractive as any morbidly obese woman.

I wouldn't touch you with a 12 foot pole, even if you were the hottest piece of ass on the planet. Your complete lack of compassion and understanding makes you hideous.

I'm so tired of seeing those ugly walking skeletons as "models" but are more like hideous things that escaped from a cemetary. I want to see nice looking NORMAL women modeling normal clothes, not bags of bones in ugly rags.

I don't think we should reward people for doing unhealthy things to themselves. Be it smoking and/or drinking to excess, depriving themselves of oxygen for the high, or, not attempting to maintain a healthy weight relative to one's physical type.

Remember God made each of us and believes in diversity.................and oh yes, please disregard any thoughts about the people out there that have it in the genes to be heavier than what the world wants them to be. I rest my case! No need to reply as you don't want to get into a pissing match with me! Trust me on that!

Since the fashion industry says so. High fashion is a size zero and sometimes a double-zero. Out here in the "real world", almost nobody is a size zero, but the fashion industry is not the real world. It's not fair, but that's the way it is.

And how does one go about belittling the "fashion industry" for being so narrow-minded? (pun not intended). Realistic-sized models are the wave of the future, no matter how much clout the garment industry uses to resist incuding them. Sizes 8, 10 and 12 are "normal" by ANY standard, and the model pictured looks GREAT! Furthermore, there are many misconceptions on size--a few bloggers back a lady called someone 5'9" 145lbs a size 8 (?) She must live on Mars, because thats closer to a 12 than a 10!
