How to Wear Black Without Looking Too Severe

It's officially fall, and, if you haven't already been wearing it all summer long, it's time to embrace the black in your wardrobe. Designers sent a parade of black on black ensembles down their runways for the cool weather season, so get ready to go to the dark side.

Blame it on the economy, or simply on the grayer, colder days days ahead, but don't call fall's black styles brooding, says celebrity stylist and "My Body My Style" host Sam Saboura.

"These black looks are very sophisticated, very sleek and beautiful," he tells StyleList, "and I think if you choose to mix black with the right colors, you can make it less severe for fall and look totally on trend."

And -- bonus! -- most women already have at least one great piece of black clothing in their closet. So, where to begin on putting together a modern style? Our resident pair of experts (in this case Saboura and designer Catherine Malandrino) offer tips on how to wear black without looking too goth.

Add color, but keep it toned down.

  • Save the neon brights for another season. This fall, think dark colors to compliment all the black, Saboura says. Right now, he's loving oxblood red, charcoal gray and hunter green. "Those are the three colors you can incorporate into accessories, into knits, into your handbag, to soften the all-black look a little bit," he says.
  • Designer Catherine Malandrino, who showed several black looks in her fall collection, agrees. "I've been thinking about a new way to reinvent black -- with deep shades of dark blue," she tells StyleList. "Emerald, burgundy and distressed fabrics."

Play with texture.

  • Malandrino says there are several fall textures that make black feel new. "I am most excited about ... trapunto black leather, layered transparent chiffon under black satin, black trim of Kidassia fur and black leather macrame," she says.
  • Saboura says texture is the most interesting thing you can do when you're wearing something all black or monochromatic. "What it does is add lots of levels and dimension to an outfit," he says, suggesting knits, especially big, chunky cardigans, as great layering pieces. "I think a flat, black outfit not only does nothing to break up your style, but it also gives a little bit of a sad, boring quality to your look."
Load up on black lace.
  • "You can bring in a lot of texture to an all-black outfit with a great pair of lace tights or textured tights in black," Saboura says. He says layering a textured tight with an over-the-knee sock and a high boot or lace-up bootie is an especially cool look for fall.
  • "There are really simple ways to incorporate lace," he says. "You could do a long-sleeve lace tee over your favorite tank top, and then throw a big, chunky black knit over that and that gives you a lot of trend and a lot of style, as well."
  • "That adds a lot of dimension, especially with the lower half of your body, which a lot of women don't think about," he says. "Younger girls are probably going to be more apt to wear the tight and stocking trend, but, in general, I think that even though we're seeing lots of black, the looks are still layered, knit-oriented and cozy and sophisticated. So, it's about being a little ladylike and a little edgy at the same time."
  • Other lace looks for fall, Saboura says, include beautiful lace tops or lace cardigans.
Break things up with strategic accessories.
  • "I like black with distressed metal or raw stones -- but not with colorful jewelry," Malandrino says.
  • Saboura says lace-up, peep-toe booties, wedge boots and over-the-knee-boots are all huge trends for fall, but you don't have to buy them in traditional black.
  • "Look for different tones," he says. "There are beautiful dark grays, beautiful oxblood colors and fantastic dark green leathers and suedes. Those are really cool alternatives to buying a basic black boot and they're still going to be timeless and something you can revisit season after season without looking like you made a trend purchase. That's a great way to break up all your black, and it allows women to wear more black clothing, but still look stylish and not like you're going to a funeral."
Find a favorite fall look:
  • "Black leather and woven fur with a black wool canvas culotte or black trapunto leather and fur coat with a black jersey harem pant," are Malandrino's top black looks for the season.
  • Whatever styles become your standard go-tos, Saboura says to work with black pieces you already own. "It can be as simple as wearing an all black outfit and choosing to wear gray tights underneath it," Saboura says. "Just do something to break up the body. It makes your outfit look a little more interesting and little more modern."

When are we doing to stop exploiting anorexic models. They have a deadly disease!

I totally agree! We will stop worshiping anorexic bodies when we stop exploiting children. Wake up everyone. The youth craze is out of control! These models, if not children with tons of makeup on, are starving themselves so that they will NOT develop into mature healthy bodies. And we all look to them as "models". It's sad and out of control!

Hey, if you could care less why are you here at all. How about spending your time on the sites you do care about instead of here. I'm not here because I think this will save the world or bring world peace but to find ways to stretch my budget in these tough economic times and I did find some helpful hints.

Really, Lesa? Really? What earth shattering, life saving, monumental information did you glean from an article that tells you "how to wear black"? And why on earth would you listen to what someone else tells you? Don't you know what YOU like?

Oh, what priceless information. How to wear black. I must print and save and put this up on my closet door.

I can't wear anything black, I have a long-haired white cat and there is no lint brush that can defeat white cat hairs.

Still, articles must be written, space must be filled up. Probably important to some poor slaves to fashion, standing there all confused in the morning.

I cannot for the life of me understand why someone who is not interested in the article would bother to read it then dis it in a stupid comment.
If you are not interested, why waste time reading it?Then COMMENT on it!?!? And if you don't like seeing clothing in "human hangers" don't look at the pictures. You people who do the above are the same people who eat in a resturant you don't like then dis the food.

maybe we cared what the article had to say then rolled our eyes at it. Poor writing coupled with bad spelling ....""Blame it on the economy, or simply on the grayer, colder days days ahead, " ..'"This fall, think dark colors to compliment all the black, Saboura says" FUNNY!!!

"This fall, think dark colors to compliment all the black, Saboura says."

That should read complement (to complete), not compliment, meaning praise or free. Someone who is paid to write should know the difference.

It should be "complement," not "compliment," in this sentence: "This fall, think dark colors to compliment all the black, Saboura says."

It's a problem when you come to StyleList articles to read about fashion but are distracted by the atrocities that are the models. I seriously can't pay attention to the clothes they're wearing because I'm terrified of/for these women.

I am not saying I condone stick thin models that are unhealthily skinny and under weight. I also do not agree with encouraging and glamorizing being unhealthily heavy or over weight. I think there is a happy medium to be found. Just because over 50% of women are a size 14 or larger does not mean that is healthy. http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=742 this website gives some stats that show that over 50% of women are overweight and depending on race between 32-52% of women are obese. As a country there needs to be a happy medium that gives girls a legitimate ideal body image to shoot for that exemplifies long term health and happyness.

Over half the women in this world are a size 14 or more???? Do you not see a problem with this? Women need to make healthier decisions. This means, eating right and physical activity. We wouldn't have this problem if people weren't so lazy. I work out frequently and eat properly. In fact, I'm training for my first fitness competition. Why people think sitting around all day/night is acceptable is beyond me. Put down the mcdonalds which is loaded in fat and have something healthy instead. And don't give the excuse of being too busy. I work fulltime, I'm in graduate school to complete my masters and still have time to eat properly and work out 5-6 times a week. Additionally, I am looking for some part time work on the weekends for extra cash. And I'm going to still have time for everything else. quit making excuses.

The model on the right in the Diane von Furstenburg dress - is she (he, maybe?) alive or dead? Hard to tell. Does Diane REALLY want someone who is obviously at death's door wearing her clothes? It's a beautiful dress - put it on a woman with curves and see how much better it can look.

Ahh, it's what women have forgotten. Models are not the prototype of the perfect woman, they are living hangers for the clothing. When designers saw that real women with real curves were eliciting more attention for their curves than for the clothing they were modeling, they defaulted to un-women, women whose shapes were nothing more than a rack to hang the clothes on.

Seriously, that model on the far right looks like a famine victim with all her bones poking out. When will the fashion industry LISTEN to the women who buy their products? We do not want you to promote starvation.

Ok enough of this. Why are you here reading this and bashing models because you are frustrated and and angry when you look at your self in the mirror every morning. Go to the gym or run around the block so you can get that negative energy and fat off your ass. Fact is being fat is not only gross it is unhealthy. Stop being jealous because you know deep inside your man is more attracted to skinny girls than your fat ass. Go to the f... gym and stop stuffing yourself with junk in front of the TV. Sick of this skiny hating fat bitches.
