Gucci has announced that its much-anticipated new 3-D cinema glasses will be available in December.

The luxury brand is hoping to cash in on the Hollywood revival in 3-D filmmaking spurred by director James Cameron's innovations with his worldwide record-breaker "Avatar."

In development since September of last year, the eyewear is described in a company release as a "pilot-shaped plastic aviator in shiny black [which] features an eighties retro sensibility that was originally released earlier this year as part of the Gucci Eyeweb sunglass collection, a youth-oriented offering of styles designed by creative cirector Frida Giannini."

The glasses, in a single unisex style, will retail for $225 and be available at Gucci boutiques in the United States.

Separately, Inside Edition released a report detailing how unsanitary some shared movie theater 3-D glasses can be.

Dr. Kelly Reynolds, a microbiologist at the University of Arizona, tells the program that "3-D glasses are a hot spot for germs. The major way viruses are spread is through your eyes. So certainly when you're putting these glasses near your eyes you want to make sure nothing is on them."

As if you needed another reason to want the Guccis.

And don't worry that you won't be able to check yourself out in them -- according to the press statement, "The Gucci 3-D lenses will contain a high-tech, multilayered mirrored coating which allows the wearer to view themselves in a mirror without distortion."
