The "Dove Hair Care Brush with Greatness Sing4All" video contest has officially launched and Tony award-winner Idina Menzel is helping the line seek out the most talented group of musically-inclined peeps to give them the chance to perform onstage at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular on December 28 in New York City.
In order to get yourself in the running, interested parties, which may include choirs, glee clubs or simply a group of three to 10 pitch perfect pals, must create a video performance of their ensemble belting out the complete lyrics to "My Favorite Things" from "The Sound of Music."
For those of you who use your DVRs to speed through commercials, Dove's latest ad campaign features their own spin on the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein tune showcasing all of the ways in which we beat up our precious locks and how Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner can come to the rescue, hence the musical tie-in.
"This contest is fun," says Menzel, who acts as your own personal Mr. Schuester (you Gleeks know what we're talkin' about) as she offers up encouragement for contestants through online calls to action at DoveSing4All.com.
"It's a chance to get back in touch with all of the glee clubbers and the choirs – it's sort of where I came from in school. I just went home and did a big concert on Long Island in my hometown. I was onstage and having lots of nostalgic moments doing just sort of what I had always dreamt of doing. It was literally about dreams coming true. I love things like this that really inspire people to get out there and put themselves out there. They can express themselves and give themselves the opportunity to be heard. I like to associate myself with that and I feel like it really empowers young people, especially, to really figure out what kind of artists and singers they want to be."
StyeList was on the scene at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel as Menzel filmed her online videos to promote the contest. The actress-singer is not only helping Dove get the word out about the competition, she will also be lending her expertise to the four finalists via video conference with personal coaching sessions.
When it comes to her own "favorite things," the mother of one keeps it simple: "This should come as no surprise, but it's definitely music. Whether I'm on stage performing or humming something at home with my son, singing has and always will be one of my favorite things. That's one of the reasons I'm so excited to be working with the Dove Hair Care Brush with Greatness Sing4All. This contest is giving performers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform an iconic song on an iconic stage. Singing 'My Favorite Things' at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular – how great is that?"
"Getting ready for performances and the red carpet is fun, [but] getting ready for everyday is different – especially as a mom," she confesses. "I'm focused on finding pieces I love that make things easier. I like classic, delicate jewelry that goes with everything, and I'm also really into cozy sweaters for fall, although I wish L.A. had the weather to enjoy them!"
With her dark brunette strands positively shining in long, loose curls, it was hard to imagine Menzel with the short, lopsided Molly Ringwald 'do that she admitted to butchering her hair into back in the day. Now she keeps her beauty routine pretty basic, both out of necessity as a working mom and in an effort to keep her hair and skin healthy after enduring lots of styling, curling and hot set lights while she's on the job.
"I always make sure to drink lots of water, wash my face at night and use a good moisturizer," she says. "I'm also a big fan of Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner."
Entries for the "Dove Hair Care Brush with Greatness Sing4All" video contest are due by November 21 and all of the rules and legal lowdown can be found at DoveSing4All.com.
