"It's entirely different from the Diana dress I designed, which was very much of the Eighties, but it's still fitting for a royal occasion. It's a much more modern dress, but romantic and out of the ordinary." - Elizabeth Emanuel

"I think that there will be so many comparisons to the late Princess Diana that her dress should almost be the opposite of what Diana's was - modern, simple and very elegant." - Tom Mora, vice president of wedding and special occasion, J.Crew

"I love the idea of mixing traditional opulence with a very clean aesthetic." - Jason Wu

"The tradition of intricate hand-pieced lacework in the high-necked bodice with elbow-length sleeves, together with the voluminous skirt of a mixture of stiff and soft silk tulle, feels regal, yet poetic." - Vera Wang

"I see a modern version of something very Victorian,"
Chanel designer
Karl Lagerfeld says of his speculative sketch for royal bride
Kate Middleton's wedding dress.
The design, with a high neck, pink bows and Lagerfeld's notes for "off-white satin" and "pleated lace for the ruffles," appears on the front page of Wednesday's
WWD.
And StyleList has the only authorized preview of that issue, in which 29 of the world's top designers -- including Lagerfeld,
Christian Lacroix,
Vera Wang,
Gucci's Frida Giannini, Angela
Missoni,
Tommy Hilfiger,
Prabal Gurung and Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli for
Valentino -- imagine what the future Queen of England might wear on her
wedding day to Prince William.
WWD notes in the story: "Though it's unlikely we've hit on the winner -- the only Brit to submit was
Elizabeth Emanuel, who, with her then-husband David, designed Diana Spencer's storybook extravaganza in 1981 -- the offerings here provide alluring ideas for Kate's consideration."
In the spread,
Tory Burch offers with her sketch: "Kate would look beautiful in a simple, elegant silhouette -- a delicate ivory lace bodice and tulle skirt with a blush lace train."
Monique Lhuillier says: "The
royal wedding will be magical. Kate's dress should be a modern mix of the traditional and contemporary."
"Kate has a sophisticated yet playful and modern look," says Hilfger, "so for her wedding she'd be a vision in a mix of traditional, whimsical and classically beautiful."
Rachel Roy says: "For Kate I would showcase the British tradition with a wonderfully beautiful, yet modern hat worn under a full-length veil with a deconstructed cascade train balancing the formality."

Of course, many people think Brazilian designer
Daniella Helayel, whose label Issa made
Kate's engagement dress, is a favorite to design the wedding gown.
