The phrase "Palm Beach style," may conjure up some disturbing images: Socks and sandals together. Pastel-colored golf wear. Melting makeup and out-of-control hair. But things have changed. And while Palm Beach life tends to be more beach basics than business formal, classic grooming and current beauty trends are never on vacation.
Nails: Manicure styles and polish colors tend to mimic whatever appears during Fashion Week, says Denise Winston, nail technician at Jupiter's Salon Cosmetica. "Fashion Week sets the tone for the season's hot colors," she says. "Deep earth tones, including dark brown and deep purple, are big this year." Palm Beaches' nail lengths tend to be a shorter, "sport" length, as opposed to the dragon-lady long nails of the 1980s. Nail strengtheners are also "in" as stronger, not longer, is the new mantra.
Hair: In hair treatments, Salon Cosmetica manager Angie Sposato has seen big demand for hair retexturizing; a kinder, gentler version of straightening. The newest procedure gives hair that smooth, straight look without chemical damage. Longer hair styles are also popular, even with older women, Sposato says. One trend seen here, she adds, is clients who prefer one-stop shopping at all-inclusive salons where all their beauty needs can be met under one roof, often at a savings over using several shops.
Face: Facial peels are becoming more popular, Sposato says. "For a few hundred dollars and a couple of sessions, a client can come in, get refreshed and rejuvenated for far less money than a facelift," she says.
Eyes and Lips: To keep a healthy, "natural" look, Sposato says women are also making great use of permanent makeup (tattooing of the lips, eyeliner and eyebrows) and eyelash-revitalizing treatments. Colors range from the ever-popular browns, bronzes and neutrals to truly bold statements in purple or blue.
Welcome back to the Palm Beaches, tourists and snowbirds. Nice to have you back - in style.
