Hate the runny, messy muck that home hair color leaves behind? Clairol says it has found a solution.

Launching in 18 shades this February at drugstores, Nice 'n Easy's Color Blend Foam uses a marshmallow-like puff texture to give you more control over the application and spread of the color.

We caught up with Clairol Color Director Marie Robinson at her eponymously named salon on New York's Fifth Avenue, where the platinum blonde demonstrated the product on models who applied the color to their own strands.

Style note: We couldn't help but notice that Robinson was totally rocking the current bold lip trend, with a shocking blue-based hot pink we found out was NARS lipstick in Schiap -- so named for the 1930s Parisian designer Elsa Schiaparelli who favored the hue in her designs.

But back to hair color.

The new foam formula requires the same basic mixing as the traditional formula, with labeled bottle No. 1 swished into the developer bottle. The main difference: The developer bottle now contains a special foaming formula. You place a pump cap on top and squeeze the bottle to deposit a golf-ball-size dollop into your gloved palm.

Robinson says to simply work the color from roots to ends, as the foam turns to liquid once it makes contact with the hair to spread more easily. You can also just treat roots if all you need is a touch-up because the foam is much easier to apply in spot-treatment manner than its liquid counterpart.

"What I like best is it's no-drip," said Robinson. "Women always have trouble reaching the back of their heads -- the foam makes it easier, and it won't drip down the back of your neck," added Robinson.

Color is then left on for about 25 minutes, and rinsed thoroughly until water runs clear. The accompanying ColorSeal Conditioning Treatment should then be applied, to hydrate strands and set your new hue with shine.

Clairol claims the formula covers grays completely, and is a permanent color solution.

To kick off the new launch, Clairol is going big! The brand will give away 100,000 boxes of the new foam color for free when you visit and "like" Clairol's Facebook page between Jan. 24 and 27. You'll even be able to pick your choice of color.

Now that's the kind of deal that just can't be beat.

And from Khloé Kardashian to Rihanna, it seems the hot hair color of the season is red.
