Sophie Theallet rarely misses a beat.

She designs her own collection, is a past winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, has seen her creations on Michelle Obama and now has designed a capsule collection, Sophie Theallet for Nine West under the company's new Shoelaborations program.

However, she had a moment of being caught off-guard in her dealings with Nine West.

"She's extremely good with timing," Nine West creative director Fred Allard told StyleList at the collection's launch fete at Banchet Flowers in New York's Meatpacking District. "One day, we show up at her home for an appointment and she had no lipstick, no makeup, and she said, 'what the hell are you doing here?' I said we have an appointment."

"It was fantastic," Theallet quipped with a laugh. "I like to have make-up on my face. I was in the middle of my collection, it was really hot outside and I had just adopted a new dog from the shelter. That dog was a mess and he barked and tried to bite them," she added. "He's on prozac now."

Allard, who is also French and has known Theallet for years winked, "I don't need you with lipstick."

However, the resulting collection is all buttoned up and ready to hit stores in May 2011. Called "Sophie from Paris Takes a Trip to NYC," the capsule includes Theallet's summer "essentials" – a ballet flat, a double platform sandal, a raffia wedge, two satchels – one in raffia and one in a gorgeous striped silk repp fabric – a charm necklace and bracelet. Prices are reasonable, ranging from $36 for the bracelet to $109 each, for the sandal and wedge shoes.

"It's totally mixed with a New York feeling – it's of two worlds," Theallet said. And it all came together in less than six months. "It was fast," she added, "but that's what fashion is about."

This collection will only be available in 45 Nine West stores across the world including Chicago, New York, Miami, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Paris among others and online at a site created specifically for the capsule collection.

Also on the site will be a short film about the collection, "with my voice," Theallet said. "The music is done by a friend of mine who does the music for my shows. It's going to be very cute – very French and New York at the same time."

Next up for Shoelaborations is a partnership with British designer Giles Deacon that will be available for fall 2011.
