Gisele Bündchen Responds to Sunscreen Controversy

When it was first reported that model Gisele Bündchen had referred to sunscreen as "poison" at a press conference promoting her natural skin-care line Sejaa in São Paulo, Brazil, angry reactions erupted from dermatologists and fans around the world.

But now, Bündchen's camp claims the incident was based on a false translation of what the supermodel actually said.

Bündchen's publicist contacted StyleList to clarify the comments, saying that Bündchen wouldn't advise anyone to skip out on his or her UV protection.

"Gisele would never say not to use sunscreen because she has had family members who have had skin cancer. She simply stated that her all-natural skin-care line does not have SPF because there is not an all natural SPF available," publicist Amber Clapp told StyleList.

"When using sunscreens, she selects ones that are free of parabens, oxybenzone, PABA and retinyl palmitate," added Clapp.

That likely leaves sunscreens with physical-barrier active ingredients like zinc and titanium dioxide, which are also safer ingredients for those with sensitive skin.

We're glad to hear the Brazilian-born beauty takes the safety of her skin seriously, as she has no doubt logged more hours in the sun on magazine and catalog covers than we have on the beach our entire lifetime.

And for the latest 411 on emerging sunscreen technology, check out our roundup.

Ask Tom Brady if she wears the pants of the family! His wife Gisele sure has many opinions and they aren't going away anytime soon! Watch out Bill, she may want to call the offensive plays next season.

It's amazing that in this day and age, people still can't except a woman with a brain. Even other women can't handle it. This is a woman that happens to have both beauty and brains. When her modeling career is over, she will be able to go on and do other things because of her intelligence, and not disappear into obscurity because her "Beauty" is gone like so many other models and actresses. Goodness, look at what Naomi Cambell does with her life.

We should be used to her making stupid comments. Wasn't she the ahole who said not too long ago that breastfeeding should be required by law?

I have lost track of all the stupid things this woman says! She and Brady are well suited, at least for now, they won't last long either.

She has made very stupid comments in the past but in this case she is right. Sunscreen with an SPF greater than 30 is as bad for your skin as the sun itself. the chemicals cause damage. The best way to protect yourself is to be all covered up or dont go out during the peak sun times during the day. Being fair skinned I dont always follow those rules but thats the best advice.

Of course she she never said that-any more than she said this! It was all taken out of context and then spun to make a "newsworthy" story!

We all know that Brady didn't marry her because of her brains. She could be his twin sister AND THATS WHY HE MARRIED HER.

I love how the comments here basically say that a woman isn't allowed to have too many opinions. Wow. And that comment she made about breastfeeding being a law, I don't disagree with her on that one. A study just came out in the journal of Pediatrics that stated we could save billions of dollars - yes that's with a B - yearly if every woman breastfed exclusively for at the very least the first six months of their infant's life. "The United States incurs $13 billion in excess costs annually and suffers 911 preventable deaths per year because our breastfeeding rates fall far below medical recommendations." Not to mention every baby deserves the closeness, the protection, and the optimal nutrition breast milk provides. But hey, I'm just a woman so what could I possibly know, right?

Breast milk could be much better if breast feeding mothers were taking 6400 IU to be able to replete breast milk with vitamin D. The current recommendation by gov't is only 200 IU a day and 400 IU by mainstream medical establishment. They are the ones screwing up big time... Just for that widespread vitamin D deficiency alone is estimated to cost us 4 trillion dollars in medical expense over the next 10 years so... who's the stupid ones?

Courtney, I agree with everything you wrote about breast feeding babies at least during the first 6-months. But I'll bet that most of the people saying that "a woman isn't allowed to have too many opinions" are women. Women are the meanest and harshest critics of women, and they can be brutal especially if the woman is famous and beautiful. Could you tell me why?

Good point Courtney. Besides, she's allowed her opinions and people who seem so mean-spirited must be awfully jealous. I don't understand why she inspires such bile amongst the commenters.

Well, Courtney, you must be as ignorant, bossy, and narrow-minded as our friend Gisele. To each their own. YOU have no business dictating to another woman whether or not she should breastfeed her baby. That's not YOUR decision, it's hers and hers alone, made with her personal beliefs, whether YOU agree with the decision or not. Stop trying to rule the world, Dear.

And this empty-headed idiot Gisele... it's not that anyone's saying she shouldn't have an opinion, everyone's got one, right? (insert A-hole reference here) But it seems she has opinions that are so far off-base on subject matters that she is NO EXPERT in, and she has absolutely NO CREDIBILITY to spout about such matters. If she wants to opinionate about, say, adhesive that she uses to keep her swimsuit in place during a photo shoot, FINE. But anything with more depth and breadth than that is too deep for her shallow mind.

Courtney, I am not sure why your statement only has one star, not that it matters much. I think you are well stated. Many women have gotten lazy, and as soon as the child doesn't except the breast, that's it, "lets' go get the formula. Too much self serving in our lives.

Woman not being allowed to have opinions is not the subject of the article. Women and men should not blurt out outragously stupid STATEMENTS. She said "Sunscreen was poison." She also made a childish bet with someone that if the Patriots lost the superbowl last year she would run down the street naked. Welched on that bet sorry. Probably the worst offense to date a man with a four month pregnant girlfriend. Real nice. Then sent her a fruit basket after the birth because she thought she should lose weight. And perhaps not all women should breast feed. Smokers, drinkers, crazed dieters. Crap in crap out. Every person should make that decision for their own baby.So when men say that women are mean, they are way off base. This shallow, vain, heartless woman should really not have a translator because what she thinks and says should not be noted. She sould stick to bra modeling because that is what she does well in life. Her face isn't even that pretty. So she should take her clothes off and shut up.

the breastfeeding comment was stupid...and courtney before you make judgements maybe you should think there could be medical reasons why a person doesnt breastfeed.. I dont breastfeed and i am very close with my baby! you may be a woman but you dont have the right to make decisions for women... and if america wants to save money quit giving it to other countries and giving all the free stuff to illegals!!!! anyway who cares what gisele thinks..the moment she started running her mouth on what americans should be doing they shoulda kicked her ass back to brazil !!!

@ Courtney: Just because you're a woman does NOT qualify you to determine what form of feeding/nutrition a newborn SHOULD receive--unless of course you're a pediatrician for SAID NEWBORN. Such as a man having a penis makes him no more qualified to determine (for example) what form of birth control other men should use. It's all a personal choice, and it's not YOUR choice, it's the person making the decision. You're just as narrow-minded as Ms. Buendchen. (and yes, that is the proper spelling without an umlaut)
