The inspiration behind Prabal Gurung's Fall 2011 collection was love and romance, but not the traditional happily-ever-after fairy-tale version. Instead, the designer imagined a girl who has been influenced by a jaded, Miss Havisham-esque character, who becomes perched on the border between good and bad.

THE SCOOP: Gurung's vision was mirrored in the hair and makeup, which featured classics punched up with surprising color placement to tell a story. Didier Malige added streaks of purple, pink, blue or orange to each model's tousled hair, while Tom Pecheux focused on the eyes to bring extra drama.

"The girls have a sort of Tim Burton movie or 'Black Swan' feel," explained Pecheux. "The theme is romance with a twisted, dark side, so I used shadow to make their eyes look almost a little mean." He purposely left the lids bare and brushed a swath of grayish-black powder accented with gold shimmer across the crease, creating a "veil of color, almost like a black pastel." He extended it up to the brows and slightly out onto the temples, then used a small brush to add more color to the inner corners to accomplish the aforementioned "mean" effect.

Next, he dabbed a rosy lipstick onto the upper lids near the lash line "to bring softness" to the look, and to evoke the feeling of a "good person with a bad side." He tapped the same rose lipstick onto the lips, and smoothed cream foundation onto the skin, followed by powder (buffed onto the skin in a circular motion with a puff) for a matte finish.

Malige created a loose, wavy style that he said was meant to evoke a "Victorian-era beggar girl meets couture" feeling. To achieve this casual yet romantic look, he used wave-enhancing spray on the models' wet hair and blew it dry using his fingers to coax out texture, and used clips to create pin waves to frame the face. A small curling iron used on random pieces enhanced the undone effect, and a spritz of hairspray kept it all in place. But the main focus was the tie-dye-ish extensions; attaching them throughout the underneath sections allowed the color to peek out without being overwhelming.

The models' hands were adorned with Asian art-inspired nails (hand painted by Jin Soon Choi, using a creamy base color accented with calligraphy-style strokes of black).
