Well, we suppose this is one way to jazz up an all-black ensemble.

Last night during a state dinner at the Élysée Palace in Paris, French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy greeted South African president Jacob Zuma and wife Gloria in a somewhat questionable getup.

The chic black one-shoulder cocktail dress that nipped in at the waist was fine, but the distracting lace tights that she paired with it left us scratching our heads. (We weren't feeling the black flats with the little poufy ball on top either).

Of course, these somewhat-trendy spiderweb-like tights have proved problematic in the past, as when J.Crew released a fawn-colored pair late last year that made its catalog model's legs appear hairy. (Google "J.Crew Hairy Legs'" and you'll see what we mean.)

And while Bruni-Sarkozy's dark black pair doesn't have us doubting her razor skills, the pattern overall is a little too loud for our taste. But perhaps that's just us.

Let us know what you think of the first lady's legwear in a comment below and check out how this outfit stacks up to her other ensembles in our gallery of Bruni-Sarkozy's style evolution.

In the meantime, funky-tights lovers should take a peek at our guide on how to pair tights with shorts.
