Tom Brady and his ponytail are generating debate about an iconic hair accessory. It was the ultimate must-have of the '80s, a source of great contention between Carrie Bradshaw and then-boyfriend Jack Burger, and quite possibly the most controversial hair adornment to date. Of course, we can only be talking about the scrunchie.

This fluffy little hair-tie is making headlines thanks to NFL star Brady, who has unknowingly sparked great debate regarding the definition of "scrunchie." It all started when the Patriots quarterback tied his long, flowing locks into a ponytail while accompanying supermodel wife Gisele Bündchen to Carnival in Brazil. Seems innocent enough, right?

Not quite. According to The Cut, sports fans did not take too kindly to Brady's updo and went into overdrive to find the perfect taunt to convey their dismay. "Brady's wearing a scrunchie!" Deadspin chuckled, for example

Perhaps these guys should have done their homework before dishing out the jabs because Brady's elastic band in no way meets scrunchie standards, The Cut points out.
