Stores are packed with bright colors, bold prints and a whole new attitude. In our "Best of Spring" series, StyleList sifts through the plethora of products to uncover what's hot, what will refresh your wardrobe and which pieces are destined to become favorites for seasons to come.

First up, trench coats: an evergreen classic.

Yves Saint Laurent started the trend many years ago, taking the traditional trench shape and turning it into a fashion icon. Along the way, designers of every ilk have added their two cents.

Most recently, we loved Rachel Roy's take on the look -- rethinking it in every variation imaginable in a stand-alone capsule collection for spring.

The traditional look is not for everyone, but this season there's most likely a trench style that will appeal to you whether or not you're usually a fan. Ann Taylor has the market covered with a short-sleeve, cropped utility trench, a three-quarter-sleeve topper and a longer, more traditional version in silk. Loft has a more feminine version in olive with a ruffle along the closure. Target's Mossimo brand has a streamlined trench in black for a mere $49.99. Calvin Klein (white label) has a gorgeous sleeveless trench dress. Along the same lines, Banana Republic did a sleeveless trench coat (aka vest or weskit) for spring.

We can't wait to get into these trenches.

Stay tuned for more "Best of Spring," as we shop the season's key trends. Up tomorrow: nautical looks.
