How Not to Damage Your Hair With a Flat Iron

Before you pick up your flat iron, read these pro styling tips. Photo: Mode Images Limited / Alamy

If you've ever used a flat iron, you've likely suffered from smoke and sizzle that led to split and fried ends.

But contrary to popular belief, you don't need to endure damage in order to achieve the sleek and smooth locks that flat iron addicts crave. Most people have simply never been versed on the proper way to flat iron. Bad techniques live on, and are often passed down from family, friends and poorly trained stylists.

Before you pick up a flat iron again, you'll want to read these easy expert tips by Misikko stylist John Davis. And be sure to enter our giveaway on Twitter for a Hana Elite 1-inch Flat Iron (valued at $360).

Size your section: There's no one standard size to section your hair for flat iron use, as hair thickness, length and iron size all vary greatly. "The goal is to make sure that each and every strand of hair gets even heat distribution. If you choose a section that is too large, the outer portions will get heated while leaving the inner portions unaffected," says Davis. Experiment to find what amount heats all of your strands equally, and then stick to that size going forward.

Smooth, don't pull: "Those who have long been using irons such as the CHI have a tendency to grip the hair and pull it straight, using friction. This method will give you decent results in the short run, but over time, will damage your hair," says Davis. Instead, move the iron slowly yet steadily through your hair, focusing on smoothing the strands instead of tugging down on them.

Don't pass multiple times: "Passing over the same section continuously -- like more than three times -- damages hair more than using a high temperature setting," says Davis. The perfect degree varies by hair type and condition, but you'll want to experiment until you find a temperature that gives you the desired result in one to two passes. And if you're smoking, you're burning.

Use heat-protective serum: Anytime you flat iron, be sure to prep strands with a heat-protective serum, like those made with jojoba and argan oil. Typically, serums are more effective than sprays because they coat strands in a protective fashion, but be sure to use no more than a quarter-size amount at a time to prevent buildup.

Don't iron wet hair: While it's OK to style hair that is still slightly damp, wet hair magnifies heat to dangerously scorching levels. Too often, people use the flat iron to do most of the straightening work, when in fact, that's the role of a hair dryer. Use your iron as more of a finishing touch to set shine and seal in moisture and sleekness, or else pay the price with badly heat-damaged hair.

I never thought I'd be saying this - I love my naturally straight hair. I don't have to do a thing to have straight hair - I was born with it!

Yeah, it's a 'blessing' to have straight hair. That's stupid.

Selena, there was not a thing wrong with the comment that Kathy made about her hair. You seem to be one angry person and over hair? She made a statement, she didn't attack you so why would you attack her. I guess I would be safe to assume that you do not have many friends with that glowing personality of yours. If you don't like the comments section....so easy....don't read them and by all means get your priorities straight.

There's nothing right about your comment either. What's the saying, Dee? Mind your own business? Might help.

Dee, Selena was just pointing out the fact that Kathy sounds so vain! And if you think it's acceptable for people to be so full of themselves then I hate to see the types of people you attract. Also why do you think that Selena is "one angry person" when she is just stating the truth. I think you need to get your priorities straight, and stop lecturing people and mislabeling their reactions.

Dee, read your own comment and then think about it a moment.
What's the definition of something like that... oh, right: hypocrisy.
'She made a statement, she didn't attack you so why would you attack her.'
Selena made a statement, a sarcastic one nonetheless, but a statement (whether it's true or not has yet to be decided. But, how many people here /do/ care that someone is bragging about how they were 'blessed' with naturally straight hair?).
Selena didn't attack YOU, so why would you attack her?

I understand you were trying to defend Kathy, but in all honesty, a simple 'that wasn't very nice', or something along those lines, would have sufficed.

Kathy I am not sure if having naturally straight here is a blessing. Maybe for you it is. To me stick straight here is not very attractive but thats my opinion.

I think that there are many ways in which a woman may style her hair, she shouldn't be expected to damage her hair in any way to conform to someone else's ideal of beauty. I applaud the Tyra show for featuring black women with natural hair instead of weaves and etc. No woman should be ashamed of her hair, or be expected to damage it for any one else's idea of fashion.

All that Kathy said was that she is blessed by God with naturally straight hair. There is nothing wrong with saying that, and no need for any fights or nasty comments by anyone.

just because you striaghten/curl your hair doesn't mean you're ashamed of your natural hair...i have thick curly hair and i'm proud of it, but sometimes you just want a change, is there anything wrong with that? I wouldn't want to wear the same shoes everyday or wear my makeup the same always. What i'm about to say may sound superficial, but sometimes looking good can help you feel good, and when something bad happens to me, i like to change my look, whether it's curling my hair someway diferent, straightening it, or wearing a different outfit i wouldn't normally wear.
