Pictures of actress Reese Witherspoon's Monique Lhuillier wedding gown are still under wraps, but expect it to feature some of the lushly romantic details that have made the Los Angeles-based designer a celebrity favorite.
Lhuillier, who reportedly worked for weeks on the gown for Witherspoon's March 26 wedding to entertainment agent Jim Toth, has been designer of honor for a growing list of celebrity brides including Carrie Underwood (for whom she made two Chantilly lace dresses), as well as expectant mothers Alicia Silverstone, Jewel and Pink.
Lhuillier also whipped up the $45,000 strapless confection "The Bachelor" bride Molly Malaney wore to wed Jason Mesnick in prime time last year.
Here's hoping the designer can use a portrait of beaming Academy Award winner Witherspoon and her groom to replace some of the unlucky-in-love couples who've also made her celebrity brag book. Her current client slide show includes images of splits-ville Ashlee Simpson Wentz, briefly married Kate Walsh and a pre-enhancement Heidi Montag. (That would be exactly the right place to insert the newlywed's mug.)
Lhuillier, a Philippines native of French-Filipino descent, has been making bridalwear since 1996, inspired by what she has described as void of couture details in the wedding gown market.
Her clients seem drawn to her supremely feminine, flattering dresses that often feature yards of lace, delicate and colorful waist bows, cascading ruffles and bursting fabric blossoms.
Lhuillier created a Camelot-inspired dress with a train of voluminous ruffles for the elegant 2004 Aspen wedding of actor Kevin Costner to his second wife, handbag designer Christine Baumgartner. The designer loves bows: She added a delicate pale-green bow to Silverstone's strapless lace dress for her eco-friendly 2005 wedding to Christopher Jarecki and a prominent black one to the girlie-goth dress she created for Pink to marry motocross racer Carey Hart. "I wanted to make Carey's heart stop for a second," Pink has said of her Lhuillier wedding dress.
Sumptuous bridal wear, of course, is not Lhuillier's only talent. The designer is a Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week regular who also regularly outfits such celebrities as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Taylor Swift and Witherspoon for red-carpet appearances.
Of course, you don't need to be a celebrity to splurge on a Lhuillier wedding gown. Read about the designer's more affordable Bliss line.
