Starburst Prom Dress made from Wrappers (Video)

Maybe you dreamed of a beautiful, designer-y dress for your prom. Maybe you even wore such a dress for your prom. Not this teen: she sported a frock of old Starburst wrappers to her prom. Made by her mom.

Wisconsonite Kerrin Frey crafted her daughter, Tara's, dress from thousands of bright paper candy wrappers, each one carefully folded (8 times!) and creased with a tweezer. Once prepped, the miniature wax papers were woven into a basket-like overlay for a muslin dress.

The project took 6 years.

Frey also crafted Starburst-wrapper shoes and a clutch for her daughter, as well as a vest for her boyfriend, Zane. Date boy looks a wee bit embarrassed, and sounds it too: "Do I like it? It's alright. I don't really have a choice."

You kind of wonder -- now that the dress is finished what will keep mom occupied?

This is a hoax created by the candy company. It was a publicity stuny and made by several people. the mother and daughter were paid to swear they made the dress themselves.

Actually I dont think it is due to the fact that the Mom had sent a request to the makers of starburst candy to "send" her the wrappers without the candy. They declined... She says that she was buying 20 lbs. of the candy per week to do the job. I dont know why they (starburst) wouldn't do as she asked as this would have been FREE advertising. I realize they're still getting the "free" advertising but also the negative publicity for not supplying the wrappers "free of charge". Now, after the fact they "starburst" want the publicity & free exposure. Cheapies...

Kim, where's your proof for your statement? "This is a hoax created by the candy company." How do you know this and why were the wrappers having to be straightened out if the factory sent them? Please post the link to prove your statement.

@judge

You do know that dress probably cost more then a regular prom dress. After having to buy all of that candy its has to be way more then a hundred bucks. I don't think there is anything wrong with paying good money for a good dress. I paid almost 200 for each of my prom dresses and paid about 300 for my 8th grade graduation dress.

@whatever It isn't about the money. That's something no one from that class will ever forget. When they reach their 25th year reunion, people will still be talking about that dress while others try to remember what they wore. It's something different, unique! Guaranteed no other dress there like it! For her date to act the way he did about the vest and saying he "didn't really have a choice," I hope she dumps his dumb butt!

I think starburst should atleast offer a nice college scholarship or something for the advertisement and money spent on her dress. This can only have been a plus for them. And by the way Mom, absolutely adorable!!!! :)

Duct Tape offered a very generous Scholarship for making your Prom dress and Tux out of it! Hello Wrigley!!!

You are right! They should offer a scholarship. But heck if they wouldn't send her just labels as she requested why would they do a scholarship? To make her buy all that candy, you think they would be glad to send her labels since her daughter is advertising their candy! And to Kim that said this was a hoax by the candy company, don't be so suspicious, some people do do things for themselves.

Wow, we made chains like this from chewing gum wrappers back in the 60's. New twist on an old fad.

Sorry they are a bit to late. My daughter made her own dress for her senior prom out the starburst wrappers, along with vest and time for her boyfriend(now husband) It was her best prom she had attended.
