Sweaty Armpits? Axilase May Be the Cure

Pit stains -- we've all had them -- but what if you could be rid of the fears of ruining your favorite gray shirts and publicly displaying your perspiration problem forever?

Dr. Mitchell Chasin of Bridgewater, New Jersey, has come up with Axilase, a procedure that uses a laser to destroy sweat glands for those with hyperhidrosis, or extreme sweating. The operation lasts only 30 minutes and rings in at $3,000 -- an amount worth dishing out for the twenty people who've tried it so far. (It's not covered by insurance.)

Kris Marra talked with "Good Morning America" about her decision to go under the...laser. She confessed, "When I'm nervous it's the worst. I'm pretty nervous socially, so a lot of times when I'm with a group of people, I'll be sweating, when I'm in class I sweat. The only time I'm not sweating is when I'm sleeping." Two weeks later, she sure looked like a happy camper.

Watch the report above and tell us what you think.

A few years ago there was news about a condition where some of the population could not sweat. It was determined it was not healthy to not sweat. So...what now?

It's only the underarms being altered here. The body does not lose its entire ability to sweat. This is not even a new idea—Bruce Lee had the sweat glands in his underarms destroyed. This is just a new and much faster method using a laser.

Hypohidrosis, or the inability of the body to sweat, is a serious medical condition. However, the removal of the sweat glands from the underarm represents a small percentage of the sweat glands in the body thereby not affecting the body's overall ability to sweat. As someone who suffers from hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, this procedure appears to be promising!

I had this problem for years. I was toild to stop using anti persperent and did so after six months it seemed to disappear and never came back.It was the aluminun soimething in the antipersperant that caused the sweating.

Hyperhidrosis is exsessive sweating, and affects three parts of the body. The face, head and neck, the palms and soles, and the upper body. For those afflicted it makes their lives miserable, no matter what form it takes. Why insurance doesn't cover it is beyond me. I hope in time that will change.

Insurance doesn't cover it yet because it's brand new. It could also potentially be considered cosmetic, so some insurance plans may never cover it. However, you're right, given time most companies will probably add it to a list of approved procedures.

Sweating is our bodies way of cooling off! If you stop a certain area from sweating you'll just sweat MORE in a different area! Some people are head sweaters, others are pit sweaters and some are crotch sweaters. I've had ringing wet hands in the past and even sometimes the soles of my feet. When I get on a treadmill, EVERY pour opens up like I'm Niagra Falls! I don't like it when I'm in public but I would never remove those sweat glands! They are there for a reason! People can just get over the fact that SOME PEOPLE SWEAT! Can't anyone be a NORMAL HUMAN BEING ANYMORE? Not all of us want to be fake plastic surgery freaks!

ANOTHER SCUMBAG SURGEON TRYING TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF SOMETHING THAT IS PEFECTLY NORMAL, HEALTHY AND NEEDED. HE SHOULD LOSE HIS LICENCE HELLO DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE WHERE ARE YOU? Hyperhydrosis should NEVER been treated aggressively like this. This isn't an anatomical problem.

DR. Chasim, YOU should be ashamed of yourself and your and your staff should close up and find another profession. You sicken me.

I had surgery for hyperhidrosis a few years ago and I have bad compensatory sweating on my lower back now. I also had a collapsed lung from the procedure, something my doctor didn't tell me until AFTER the surgery happens in about 10% of patients. If I could do it again, I'm not sure I would. I'd REALLY think about it before getting the surgery- the compensatory sweating is much worse than the original sweating ever was.
