In 1981, Vivienne Westwood made her mark on London's fashion scene with her aptly titled "Pirates" collection. The garments and accessories evoked the fantasy and romanticism of criminal seafarers and launched a career of whimsical runway looks.

Since Dame Viv's debut collection, scores of designers have emulated her creations. While Betsey Johnson and Jean-Paul Gaultier (left and right, above) took the pirate influence quite literally, the team at Chloé erred on the side of sophistication (center).
