Bursting at the Seams: Stars In Messy Braids

Stars In Messy Braids

  • Diane Kruger
  • Ashley Greene
  • Blake Lively
  • Jennifer Hudson
  • Amanda Seyfried
  • Brittany Snow
  • Rihanna
  • Minka Kelly
  • Dianna Agron

Unpredictable summer weather often forces many women to twist their locks into sad topknots, but the braid can turn a bad hair day into an effortlessly gorgeous hairdo, according to celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger.

Diane Kruger
, Rihanna and Nicole Kidman have all managed to make simple plaits look pretty amazing. And models floated down the Spring 2011 runways of Lela Rose, Alexander McQueen and Valentino wearing wispy woven masterpieces.

"Braids appeal to so many women because they are easy to achieve no matter what your hair type," Hershberger tells StyleList. "They are a chic alternative to throwing hair into a traditional ponytail and attaining the style takes no time."

Want to recreate this tousled 'do at home? The Hollywood hair pro breaks it down into five simple steps:
1. Spray damp hair with Hyper Hydration Super Keratin Spray to lock in moisture and leave hair smooth.
2. Then flip your head upside down and use your fingertips to brush through the hair while blow drying. This will help to create a textured look throughout.
3. Spritz on a thickening mist like Plump Up to give hair guts.
4. Sweep the hair to one side, separate it into three sections and braid. Allow the little pieces that may start to stick out and fray to hang loosely as this adds a messy look to the style.
5. Finish with a flexible, lightweight hairspray for a strong hold without any heaviness or stickiness.

Check out another summer hair trend that has stars going to great lengths!

Those braids look like my hair when I was 6 or 7 yrs. old, not a look for a grown woman even if she is young, it's tacky looking and no one will take her seriously.

i have long hair and go to a salon for a french braid all the time. it looks great, and i have a friend who can do a 5 strand french braid that looks awesome. no need for a sloppy braid, go get it done right and see how many compliments you get, esp if you are blonde and the different shades add to it.

yea it may look good on black peoples hair, But i do not understand WHY would you do that. It pulls ur hair out, and u have to be all fake by having a wig on. now that looks like crap. what is wrong with brushing ur hair and NOT being lazy by having braids in. Just meens you women that braids your hair when you get older you have to wear a wig. It looks like crap when you have short hair, you look like a wannabe man. And a woman that has shorter hair than a man is NASTY.

It can be a very nice look, but they are all wearing it wrong. First, you have to have a nice head of hair to begin with. It has to be long and it works best if it's washes, but not freshly washed (at least within the last 12 hours). You have to use your hands and fingers ONLY. No combs or you'll lose that messy, tousled look that you're shooting for. Start the braid at lobe level and keep it loose. Remember to leave at least 2 inches of hair at the end for the tail. After securing it with a rubber band put a bit of decorative trim around the end that goes with the rest of your outfit. Anything from ribbon to an elaborate hair ornament.

I think braids are nice, but not for over 50.
